I've probably played golf less than 10 times so far. I walked the course today for the first time and I think I prefer it over riding. It seemed like I took my time more than when I ride. I think I'm too quick to just jump out of the cart and take a whack.

Most times I've played my score is 100-110 (don't laugh I'm new). Shot a 98 today so it wasn't a whole lot better, it just felt better.

I think I'll be walking a lot more often now. What do you prefer?

What I'm hitting:

XL 5000 set: includes driver, 3 & 5 wood, 4 & 5 hybrid, 6-PW, and sandwedge

I think walking is the way to go. More sociable, faster, heathier, more pleasant. When I lived up north I would walk all the time
Unfortunately, here in Florida there are very, very few courses that allow you to walk.
To be more absurd, because of the drought, many courses are "cart paths only".
I would rather play the cart fee and walk with my clubs on a pull cart that have to do the cart paths only thing
I have not been able to convince the people in my club to allow walking.

I prefer to walk, but don't despise riding. I always seem to play better when I walk, as I think about the previous and upcoming shots between treks. However unfortunate it may or not be, revenue hungry owners (for the most part) have forced today's architects to create path lined, non-walkable courses, three of which have been opened in my county in the last 7 years alone.

yeah it seems (to me anyways) that the more expensive the course the more likely you are to ride.......it seems they are placing alot of space between greens to the next tee box...... for me though I enjoy walking more then riding, but I need to start taking my pull cart as after about the 13th hole my shoulders and knees are killing me from carrying the bag....

I live in Atlanta and run into the same problem with walking not being allowed on many courses. I understand that they want to get as many rounds in a day as possible, but it's a shame that you can't walk many places anymore. I find I play much better when walking.

It depends on the course......totally. Courses that aren't in residential areas are great to walk. On the other hand, it's too much of a chore to walk the courses that are spread all throughout a neighborhood.

I enjoy walking....and sure need to do more of it. Much of the golf I've played with my father has been walking golf.

I bought a really nice push cart last week and tried it out on Thursday. The cart was super. I do need to get some "running shoe" type golf shoes....they seem to hold up best for walking.

Breaking 100 one of your first dozen times out? Congrats. I likewise prefer walking. I find it easier to plan my next shot while walking up, and I can generally get the distance for the shot as I walk up, and I prefer that over an exact number from GPS. I'd rather know that it's "about 130" than 132 or 128, and if I have a cart, especially with GPS, I'm going to get the exact number. Plus, after any imperfect shot, your cart-mate will tend to point out the swing flaw. I don't mind if my teaching pro points out a flaw, but he'll generally tell me what to do differently instead of pointing out the flaw. But when my friends who aren't pros tell me I'm doing something off with my wrists, or shoulders, or knees, or pinkie fingers, it sticks in my mind for a few shots... and my thoughts turn to that during a shot and, well, you know the rest. Kinda hard for them to do that to you when you're walking.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I really hate riding.. I have never enjoyed it.. I'm currently rehabing a broke left tibia, and after 18 (two weeks ago) I could barely walk, but I played 18 yesterday and today and my leg feels great.

Not only do I like the exercise, I also enjoy the time I have to think about my next shot at it normally seems faster than the carts.. I really hate when I'm behind a 4some using two carts and they are driving all over the place looking for balls, watching every players shot it just seems like it takes forever.. I don't hate riders, but walking and carrying my clubs is the way to play it imo.

I vastly prefer walking over riding. I am a beginner myself and half the fun for me is being outdoors on a beautiful day in a beautiful park just enjoying the scenery. At the courses I play, the carts cost just as much as the round of golf does! I find this to be outrageous.

Walking is great, I just hate it when people with carts ride your tail even though you are keeping a good pace. I never understood why people wanted to get a round done with as soon as possible... I feel it is an experience to savor and as long as I'm finished with 9 holes in under 2 hours I think I am doing well.

Same here. The course I played today cost $8 to walk and it would be another $8 to ride.

I'm usually short on time when I play. If I only have 3 hours to play, I still want to get 18 holes in, cannot do that walking but can easily do it riding. Also, If I'm playing with friends and we're boozing, then a cart is a big plus. Holds the beer, gives you a place to chill out a bit.

Walking is great though.

Foot Joy Contour is the best walking shoe, and it actually looks like a golf shoe. (don't go with the sneaker looking golf shoe. people who wear sneakers on a golf course are called the "sneaker brigade", no need to try to imitate them.) The Contour is as comfortable as any sneaker style shoe out there, and it is not too expensive.

I prefer riding so I have a place to sit and wait if the need arises. The other problem with walking (at least here) is that many of the courses in the Pittsburgh area are very hilly, making walking a sweaty tiring proposition.

Sandman, I don't know where you're playing in our area, but most of these courses are DIFFICULT to walk. Hills, bigger hills, and then the biggest hills.

I've walked county courses in NY & NJ and been able to finish at the quickest 3 hours...but on avg walking takes me around 4 hours.

Its interesting to note cultural differences in golf. As this forum is US based, it seems everyone is used to golf carts. Over here in the UK its pretty normal to walk, and a high percentage of people don't even use a trolley, and carry their bag! Using a cart would be unlikely at most courses.

On another note, from a sports science point of view, generally you will play better when you walk. When you sit in a cart all your lower body muscles are doing nothing, and your hamstrings and hips are shortened and tightened.

When you walk you are using these muscles which are important to the swing, so they are stretched and warmed up ready to go, which leads to a better swing.

I walk exclusively (except when I'm on vacation and playing at a course that won't allow it). The addition of some FootJoy e-Comforts and a Sun Mountain Superlight 3.5 stand bag have made it much more enjoyable.

I also find that I play worse when I ride. I think it's for a number of reasons. I think I take my time and focus more when I'm walking than riding. I also think it's easier to shake off a bad shot because you typically have more time in between shots to compose yourself and think about the next one as opposed to riding up quick and whacking it again.

    • The dreaded 6 o'clock shadow. 🤣
    • 47+49 for a 96. Just lost it today. Two way miss off the tee. Could not hit a decent iron. Three putted like at least 8 holes. Not good when the short game is the best part of the day 😭😭
    • Phillyk is very close by. Ok, I understand how the watch and tags are meant to be used, but I was just curious how it actually works. I can't really think of any other way than what I mentioned above. No worries. If it works it works. I'll probably pick one up. My co-worker mentioned a free app called 18 Birdies which offers similar services. However I personally do not like keeping my phone in my pocket while golfing, nor do I want to be clicking around on the phone while out on the course. I toss my phone in my bag and leave it there until I am done golfing. Tapping a club head to a watch seems wat more convenient.
    • Yes, but not always the case. IMHO, green speeds are a huge variable and can effect score variation from week to week or month to month significantly. Our own course that is running at about 8-9 depending on the week/day, can run up to 12 (no kidding) in peak months around certain event, and most like me score 3-4 shots higher on an average, missing a lot of 3-4 footers. There are any PCC adjustments that I am aware of. Have you every played their course? I am betting $20 you will find some answers if you haven't already.
