I'm considering taking out my 16* hybrid and my 3 iron and adding a 19* hybrid and a 64* wedge giving me 47*, 52*, 58*, and 64* wedges. I have a low ball flight and the 64* will make it easy to hit high shots that stop on a dime from less than 50 yards, a shot that I find to be difficult with my 58* wedge. What do you all think of that idea?

What are the distance of your wedges now? Does the 64 fill in any distance gaps.

I play a 60 wedge and when I need to get more height I open the face and get more loft.

I would consider either a 60 or 64 wedge.

since he has already has a 58.. A 64 would seem to be good, how quick are your greens?

I would work on improving form more than adding a wedge..

If you strike the ball correctly, even on a lower trajectory, it will still get pretty good bite on the greens, if your hitting it low with no spin, than your not gonna get a huge amount of help from 6 extra degrees..

I know I'm a newbie here, but I'm going to have to agree. I have a 64°

and it wasn't the miracle I was looking for. I find an Approach Wedge will get the job done just fine if you open the face a bit.

You know how I feel. But I want to also add, I tried a couple 64s with bad results (one Walmart and one Wilson). Once a major brand released a quality 64 I was able to see it's usefulness.

After my round yesterday I brought the bag home and decided to swap my 3 wood for a 64. Having the same problem less than 50 yards, and my 19 deg hybrid goes just about as far as my 3w from the fairway.

With my 19 index, I'm betting on more options up close than from long range. I would love to improve my shot making and spin, too. The 64 lets me use a square set up and 'normal' swing...easier for my game.

I have to say, getting my old 64 deg wedge out of my bag was a god send - stuck in a 60 vokey as a replacement. I find the 60 more versatile. The Vokey goes 85 yards with a strong swing. The 64 went about 60, and I was prone to knifing it. From 50/60 yards, the last thing I wanted was a full swing. Much better to go 3/4 with the 60. It still flies high, esp with the face open, and the grooves mean it stops quick.

If you are looking for control round the green, a good 60 wedge will do more for spin than an average 64 will.

How about stick a new 60 in the bag, and have the 58 bent back to 56, to give you 47, 52, 56 and 60 - roughly 4 degs between each wedge

I agree with most of the above posters in that a 60 is probably more useful, how ever if I come across a used 64 in decent shape I'd certainly buy it, I think it could be useful, but only if you worked with it a lot.

i myself would find it hard to play a 64* wedge, i have a low skip and stop shot i hit with my 60* im not sure how it works but i play it back, open stance and open face pull across it real hard and it stops on a dime from 25-70 yards (hit with my 56* sometimes)

as a lefty, finding a 64* was a nightmare but now that I have it and have fought with it a LOT, it is one of my favorite clubs to hit.

A wonderful club when you have very little green to work with and just want to pop it up and see little roll. Sure you could do that by opening the face of a 56 or 60, but to me those wedges are awkward standing over with the face flopped open and it is tough to feel confident if you are not a low handicapper.

You will need to spend a good bit of time practicing with it, but I struggle with 3/4 and 1/2 swings, and love taking a controlled full swing from 65-70 yds.

What companies make a quality 64?

Cleveland and Callaway make ones that match their normal wedges.

But today I got a lesson and told my pro about this idea and he said that I was trying to make the shot harder then it is. Then he taught me a swing where I aim my body left of the target and the clubface at the pin, and then swing my arms along the line to the pin. This worked beautifully! After some practice I'm sure I'll be sticking chips next to the pin every day! I can do that shot with the 58* that I currently have, so I'm not going to get the 64* wedge.

If you think it'll help you i'd say go for it, i just bought a 54* wedge and it works perfect for me i can sit the ball so fast and the spin i get is amazing.

How often do you need a 50 yd shot to stop on a dime... isn't 1-3 feet close enough... I can't imagine your 58 is rolling much more than a few feet from 50 yds.

Most people that have a 64 (and that's not many people) use it strictly around the greens. Sure, you could give up a hybrid for it... but how often do you really need a 64. I carry a 58, used to carry a 60... and the 58 stops dead on any relatively full swing. Only time I ever miss the 60 is if I try to play a huge flop to a tucked pin over a bunker or some such thing (10-30yd shots). I rarely even take full swings with the 58.... usually I'll opt for the 52 or PW on anything from 50yds and out.

Its pretty rare I need to use my LOB wedge and that's why its out of my bag more often than its in. Unless you have to get over a greenside bunker with little or no green to work with (like ten yards total) I don't use it. A fluffy lie can be a nightmare for these high-loft clubs too. Learn your 1/4,1/2, and 3/4 swings with your 56 and you'll have a better arsenal in your bag.

I always had a 60° in my bag (same thought as you - high ball - quick stop), but just hitting it high doesnt do the trick, you need to catch the ball clean enough to get proper spin on it.

And thats something that develops over time - you cant force hitting the ball properly. It comes with skill increase and a clean swing.

My 64 was a god-send. Use a 60 vokey bent to 62 now, would kill for a 64 vokey tho. I never ever hit full shots 100y & in. The 64 is in no way at all a distance filler, it is a trejectory filler. Also I often deloft my wedges very much in my stance so a 64 plays lower to me, but it is great for me to be able to play a 64 also.

On extremly fast greens it is a killer, on really steep hills it is a killer, over high trees it is a killer & from really steep sand traps it is a killer. My 64 (62 now) is one of the clubs I use most often.

    • I’m not sure I agree. It’s just what the majority find more entertaining. Most people prefer women’s gymnastics over men in the Olympics. How much hype is there with the men’s compared to the women’s? I bet you can rattle off several big names in women’s gymnastics and only a handful of men. Women’s tennis …same thing. And sure enough, their purses are the same. However, WNBA, awful…LPGA, not near as much interest than PGA. Don’t think it’s really that complicated IMO.

    • This isn't some kind of natural fact. It's a lot more complicated than this implies.
