I looked through and haven't seen a thread on it for this season so far, if so..sorry.

Anyway, when is your club championship? How'd you do last year, goals for this year? Mine is this weekend, and its been raining the past several days and I haven't been able to practice. Just a few more days, soaking and scrubbing the clubs the night before...you all know the drill.

When: This weekend, Saturday and Sunday...16h & 17th
Last year: Obviously, our club is very small..but I was proud of myself. I won the first flight, mainly because all the good golfers that shot bad enough to qualify for the first flight declared for the championship flight because of pride and that left me with not much competition. Shot 80, 78 = 158
This year: I hope to improve by about 4 strokes for a 154.

Mid september - will be my first club championship - wont even have a shot at winning - my goal is to shoot 3 sub par 80 rounds and hopefully not have any blowup holes where i reach double digits, which just can happen so easily at our course....

Our 2-day Club Championship was this past weekend.

My goal was to win...I am playing extremely well (My index has been dropping from an 8.5 in July, to my current 7.3 for August, trending to a 5.4).

We have a small club so the format was a Gross flight from the Blacks (tips) and a Net flight from the Golds (normal tournament tee). I could have gone either way (no man's land) but decided on the net flight (8hcp). I figured I had to shoot mid 70's gross to have a chance in either flight so the percentages favored the Golds.

Well, the old saying... "You can't win it on Saturday but you can sure as hell lose it".... held true for me.

I was 1 over net par heading into the downhill Par-3 17th. With an unusually strong tail wind I hit a pure 9-iron to a back left pin (168 to the back edge). It took 1 hop behind the green and disappeared. I took an unplayable lie and re-teed, 3 putted and scored a triple. I hit my tee shot on the Par-5 18th (left-to-right crosswind) into the lake on the right. I hit my 3rd pin-high to the right hand greenside bunker. With a downhill lie with water behind the pin, firm-as-dirt sand in the bunker, I bounced the club into the ball and airmailed the water. A drop, chip and two putts later I effectively took myself out of contention with the triple/triple finish (87 for a net 79). I was shell-shocked to say the least.

I bounced back on Sunday with a gross 75, net 67 to finish T6 (146).
The net winner (12hcp) shot 130 with 2 career rounds...unreal. He's a good guy so we were happy for him (not a bagger).
The gross winner shot 77+71=148 winning by 6.

The important thing is that I had a great time with a bunch of friends who share the same love of golf.

Good luck to you and everyone else heading into your Club Championships.

Our club match play championship is underway. It goes over a 12-week stretch, two weeks per round to get your match played. I bowed out in the second round this year.

The stroke play championship is a two day event, Aug 23 & 24, and is flighted by handicap. There is also a lowest gross and lowest net club champion trophy.

Ours just past, the two favorites both lost to the guy who won it. It was very fun to watch this year.

We also had the Junior Club Championships last week too. I lost to a pretty damn good 14 year old in the semis. =/

When: August 23rd & 24th (Saturday-Sunday)
Format: Two Round Stroke Play
Last Year & Goals: I shot 67-68 to lose by one. I'm hoping for a repeat of the two rounds I played as I think they will hold up this year

I think we had an official Club Championship thread last year that got stickied...not sure if that will happen again this year. If not, I will post my results here

Ours is the 23rd and 24th. The current champ is playing well right now, hcp +1. I've heard other members say that he should "have fun playing in the club championship by himself". I'm looking forward to it. I'll be working in it, not playing.

My Club Championship is in September. I am the defending champion so there is a little pressure to do well again. I have not played all that well so far this year so I need to get it going before it gets here.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well...this past weekend was my Club Championship and I ended up playing very well and won by five strokes!

I shot 69 the first day and 71 the second. I won $425 for my efforts ($200 cash, the rest club house credit). I also broke my driver in the processes The strap came loose on the 15th fairway by the green, and when I took off, the bag fell off. Two holes later when I went to take the driver out, the head just popped right off. Fortunately for me, the head pro was able to lend me his driver for the second round...and he just happened to have the same driver as me.

Me and my brother in law played our Club Championship this past weekend. Our course has 36 holes so the tournament was on a different course each day which was cool. Both being an 18 handicap, we were in the last (4th) division. We both had one good day and one really bad day so we weren't expecting to rank too good. I ended up finishing in 2nd place (GROSS) and he got 1st place (GROSS) beating me by only 2 strokes. Not bad for two guys who just started playing full time this summer! I had golfed 10 years ago for about a year and he probably played a few rounds per year before we decided to buy our membship this year. I guess all that time spent on the course this summer actually paid off.

In our 36 hole championship, I got off to a bad start and shot 73 the first day so I had some ground to make up. The next day, I was 2 under going into #10 and tripled it. I ended up shooting 71 and lost by 3. I hate that friggin' hole. Ended up getting 5th.

I played in mine this year. It was the first real tournament I ever played in. While I didn't finish last I did play terrible. Waiting for every shot while guys line up 10 inch putts causes you to spend too much time thinking about the fact that you are in a tournament. Five and a half hour rounds how do you get a rhythm going?

I'm a grip and rip guy the less thinking the better.
Tournament golf is way different than playing with your buddys and not nearly as much fun. At 47 I don't think I'll be joining the tour, too much choke in me.

I wish I was a member at a club.

Speaking only for my club, there are actually only a handful of the "old guys" you refer to, with the majority of them playing for the Net championship. We have a couple of college aged kids, my age group (mid-late twenties), then the majority is late thirties to early forties.

Lot's of beer and lots of razzing each other Last year at the Club Championship a buddy of mine literally ripped the bill of his cap right off...then proceeded to play the rest of the round with the rest of the hat on his head! Funnier if you could see what he looked like
