What is your golf oriented "pet peeve"

When I hear someone say "I love to golf" or "I am going golfing", it is like fingernails on a blackboard. I love to play golf and go to play golf regularly. I also like to play bridge and Monopoly but I would not like to "bridge" or "Monopoly".

Does anyone else share my horror at the way our sport is referred to - even by people who ought to know better?

Sorry pal, I consider "golf" to be a verb. But I share your aversion to fingernails on chalkboards, for what that's worth.

Since the dictionaries say "golf" can be a verb then I don't have a problem with it.

My peeve is self-appointed swing gurus who claim to know all of the details about THE correct golf swing, and why Hogan's swing sucked.

People who have no business getting angry after poor shots, but still insist upon it.

I've recently quit playing with a guy because of it; the final straw, a tomahawk across the fairway yelling 'I f.....g hate golf' I just walked off after that.

My biggest pet peeve has to do with people who play on "my" golf course and don't respect it. Fix your pitch marks, ball marks, replace your divots. . .Don't smack your putter head into the green because you missed a short putt.

Last week I played at my home course and 2 greens had marks all over it that looked like a fat lady in high heels was doing jumping jacks. When my buddy stuck his blade putter in one of the marks and it fit perfectly, we both just shook our head and went, WOW. Someone had smacked the green NUMEROUS times with their putter.

Other than that, I just hate pompous golfers who are more about their image on the course than playing a good, respectable game.

Oh, and I golf, and I play golf. Just depends on who I'm speaking to.

I have a problem with this as well. I was on the course (avoiding the golfing vs. playing golf) a month or so ago and there were sunflower seeds all over almost every green. I asked the marshall to look into it and he found the person.

I would have to agree with the "people getting overly angry" pet peeve.

To add to the list I also hate it when I play with a new group and they scoop my ball up for me and consider it in the hole. I like to play until I hear the ball hit the bottom of the cup regardless of how close I get. I don't do "gimme's"

I agree with Smith5606, but it only mildly bugs me. FWIW, it has been my experience that people that play regularly and have low handicaps rarely use 'golf' as a verb.

My bigger pet peeve is slow play and people determined to hole it out beyond the ESC max in non-competitive formats. Luckily, my club is very good about enforcing this.

people getting angry is certainly a peeve, but everyone gets frustrated a little so I have some sympathy for them.

No for me the worst thing you can do on a golf course is offer unsolicited advice. If I hit a bad shot and say, "I don't know what I did wrong there..." then you are perfectly entitled to tell me what you saw. If I say nothing then you have no business offering me your advice. The worst example I have of this is a guy who is a member of a course where my family plays at home. I remember this guy joining me and my brother about 12 years ago on the back 9 and totally destroying what had been until that point a really fun round of golf. He insisted on giving advice on every aspect of the game to the point that he totally destroyed our confidence. Speaking to my dad about a month ago it seems this guy hasn't changed and had tried to do the same thing with my dad.... the thing is the guy is like a 20 handicapper and is in no place to be offering advice, even if it were asked for....

Golf Pet Peeves:

-Unsolicited advice from 20 handicapper
-People who throw or slam their clubs
-Mobile phones/pagers on golf course
-People not respecting course and their rules (driving cart off path on 'cart path only' days, driving to close to green, not fixing divots and ball marks, not raking bunkers, not throwing trash in can, etc.)
-People hitting multiple balls and/or practicing when course is backed up
-Courses that have 7 minute tee times then complain about golfers being backed up
-People spending 20 minutes looking for lost golf balls or pulling out ball retriever and using it to drag lake
-Homeowners who's yards are 20 feet off fairway putting up signs not allowing golfers to at least retrieve their golf ball if they can see it.
-Houses too close to fairway/green/tee box
-Courses that don't warn of aerated greens/fairways or other on-course activities and problems that affect play but still charge full price

Doesn't bother me:

-People who do not play by rules (free drops, gimmes, improvement of lie, etc.) as long as it's not a competition. I follow rules, but I want everyone to have fun.
-Slow play (within reason - I'd rather be on golf course than elsewhere anyway)
-'Hacker' courses, as long as they are priced as such.
-Women golfers - they often play faster than men and are usually more courteous.

Gotta be the guy who spends more time reading putts than a PGA guy does over a 20foot birdie putt for the Masters win. Come on guy, it's for a beer after the round, not a Major win! Eric, if you're out there... ;^)

Referring to a fairway wood as a fairway metal. Now if the guy strikes his 6 steel (iron) smartly, or his 9 titatium (iron) consistently on the sweet spot, I suppose I will allow him that idiocentricity, but that will be the last time we play together! Just talking about it makes my eye twitch ..... jmoc

Loud people at the driving range. I understand talking if you're taking/giving a lesson, but I can't stand the guys who yell and cheer about their shots to their buddies. Or the guy right next to you on his cell phone.
