  1. 1. Do you concede and accept putts inside the leather?

Here is the question. When playing a match with your friends, do you concede inside the leather, and do you accept when someone gives you those putts? I started thinking about the last matches I've played, and I can't remember the last 2 footer I had to putt, or made someone putt... except on 18 with a friendly wager riding on a sidehill lie....

it all depends.

is it par or trip?
down or up hill?
break no break?
money no money?

I do hate it in league though when I give somebody a "gimme" and they don't return the favor. We had one group last year that never conceded a putt, after we realized this we made them putt EVERYTHING, and btwn the 2 of them I would say they missed 3 that I would have given them.

In our match play we don't play "in the leather" really but most putts in that range are conceded. You have to wait until your opponent gives it to you though, you can't just pick it up.

I can answer this (for myself) by saying: what do the rules of golf say? I play most of my rounds to post to a handicap, so... I putt everything out.

In fact, one of my pet peeves is when I'm playing with someone who I don't regularly play with and they knock even a 1-footer away. I like to hear the sound of the ball going in the hole, dammit, and not to cheat. I'll never miss a 1-footer, but still - let me putt the damn thing out.

Occasionally, when playing with the guys I play with regularly, the ones a foot long or so we don't putt out. But not "inside the leather." More like "if it's shorter than the grip (leather) itself, it's good. And even then only when you'd be stepping on someone's line to putt it out...

Never say "never"...I just missed a one footer for par on the final hole of my round today. Stupid, stupid, stupid, but it happens.

Putt everything out. If you're not used to the "sound of the ball going in the hole" on those short putts, they become that much tougher in a competitive round when they're NOT playing "inside the leather".

The rationale that conceding short putts speeds up the round is kind of lame: if you can't miss, just walk up and tap it in. If, on the other hand, you have to take the time to line it up and stuff, maybe they aren't all that automatic in the first place.

What this comes from is, people hate missing the short putts, so they've rationalized and convinced themselves that they CAN'T miss, and so therefore it's fine to pick them up.

If I'm playing a competitive round I'll accept a gimme if its offered half the time. I can't remember picking up a ball in my practice rounds in a long time. I like to actually get the ball in the hole. Its the only way I feel my score is legitimate... good or bad.

I have both taken and given. But here lately, just for my own improvement, I have been putting everything out.

That being said; when I go to play with my Dad (he lives in MS) in late June I will take the ones he gives me and also return the favor. I have only beat him once and will take everything he gives me. Plus if he gives me one and I still putt it but miss, he then makes me take both strokes .

I'll give my partners putts inside 2' but even when they tell me to pick it up I usually tap it in just to finish the hole (at least in my mind). Now if it's a slick sidehill'r I make them putt...that can be fun to watch!

Sorry for your lack of putting skills from one foot?

Putt everything out. If you're not used to the "sound of the ball going in the hole" on those short putts, they become that much tougher in a competitive round when they're NOT playing "inside the leather".

This is the part where you seem to be talking in general, not to me anymore. I never said I give putts (or take putts) inside the leather, nor did I say the rest of the stuff you seem to imply I've said... So, again, I think you must be talking in general.

I HATE THAT. I'm golfing 3-6 times per week with a different friend each time. Whichever of my friends has the day off is the one who is golfing with me and they all do that. I'm paying for the course time so that's one more time I get to go through my routine and make a put. If I'm counting the stroke then I'm hitting the ball.

I've gotten really good at yelling "leave it alone!"

I want to acknowledge I'll take the gimme before someone knocks my ball away. Part of the reason that bugs me is that I love playing the game. I like stroking the ball off the tee, fairway, greens, woods, wherever I get to hit it. I am especially bugged when, on the 18th green I'm about to tap in for par, someone knocks my ball away and says "you can have it." Well, if I can have it, then give it to me.

Sorry about the confusion there...I used to write more concisely and clearly than that, but yeah, only the first sentence was intended to be addressed to you. The rest was in response to 'Wood's' original question.

for me the biggest difference is - am I playing matchplay or stroke? in matchplay "give or no give" is another way of messing with your opponent. It belongs to the strategy of the game, give a lot early, but then all of sudden make him(her) putt out. Some (weaker) opponents start thinking about it... and we know what happens when you think over a 2 ft putt
In stroke play - I'm with Erik. Never is about right.
Actually playing a lot of matchplay format with my friends I developed new version of "gimmie". We say "it's good for the match", which leaves it totally up to your playing partner to putt out or pick up, but the putt is conceded for the match purpose. With unknown playing partner IMHO there is nothing wrong with telling him/her, that you'd like to putt out just for practice after they pick it up for you on the 1st hole... just make sure this is not a 1ft putt for a 8

I as well with some of the others like hearing the ball go to its hole. I like it so much I take out the lazy flag stick on the practice greens just so I get use to hearing the ball go in and visualizing it as it is a really put with nothing sticking out of the cup.

I putt everything out, just to make sure that when I get to a competition, I can make the short putts.

When I'm playing a match, I play by the rules of match play. When I'm playing in a stroke competition, I play by stroke rules. There is nothing in the Rules of Golf about "inside the leather" in reference to either match play or stroke play, so it's irrelevant. In match play, a player can concede a stroke, a hole, or the entire match to his opponent. If conceding a stroke, there is no length stipulation for a stroke to be conceded... it could be conceded from 200 yards out. And once conceded, it cannot be withdrawn, nor can it be refused by the recipient. In stroke play, there are NO gimmes.... period!

As a result I can't answer your poll. The length of my putter shaft has nothing to do with my match play strategy.

BTW, a score made in a match played under the Rules of Golf doesn't properly qualify for handicap submission, because it isn't played under the rules required for handicap scores. There are rule modifications that cover this, but several score adjustments may need to be made before the card can be returned for handicap purposes.

And that's the way it is, July 8, 2007. ( to quote a very well known TV news reporter)

Rules is rules( I think Pogo said that). We either play by them or we cheat!!!! ( your choice) I play with a guy who always gives himself anything inside 4 feet. He is very hard to beat! I putt everything including 2 inchers. If you really, really want to play your best golf, putt everything. Anything else is kidding yourself ( and not real golf)! Matchplay (two words?) is another game altogether. Rules allow "gimmies" and you better take them or you will come out on the short end of ths stick.

In games with my buddies, or in a cheap $2 nassau, I give everything inside the leather, and expect likewise. I am a bit cheesy about it, though - my putter is about five inches longer than the putters most of my buddies use, so I get more gimmies.

In real play, or for anything more than $2, I putt it all out, and make them do it.
