Some of you may have read that I am trying to re-establish my game after a near 15 year absence. Its been a struggle, shooting in the mid-high 80s with streaks of holes where I will be even or in the red sandwiched between big numbers. I will hit ridiculous tour quality shots.....but not as often as I will hit something fat, thin and even the occasional top or shank. The biggest problem is the driver, I stand over the ball with no idea where it is going to go.

So I decided to get two lessons from a local pro, inclusive of video. After my first one, things felt closer, but I still had a tendency to lose it during a round. I had too many things going through my head. Last night I had my follow-up and then stuck around to hit balls....really glad I did!

I saw my old swing, versus new swing and I was stunned. I am so close to being "on plane" for the first time in my life! I wish I could show you guys the videos.

Anyway, I hit about 200 balls after the lesson, I couldn't stop, I was having so much fun! I was puring everything, I was starting to work the ball again and I was bombing drives. I was in control of my swing not for the first time in 15 years, but for the first time in my life. At one count I had hit 71 straight shots totally pure and within 5 yards to the left or right of my target.

Never in my life.....now, lets take to to the course!!

Nice! It might be worth a trip up there to see that pro!

I'm guessing that you want to get that swing onto the course as quickly as you can. When are you gonna get out and play?

Congrats man! I know the feeling. I am about to start working with a teacher again to help me get where I want....I am excited about it! My swing is good enough now that I hit high quality shots and that gets me VERY excited about hitting the ball even better and more consistent.

Oh my... as one of the older and hopefully wiser golfers around here, there is something one should never do. That "something" is to say, "Now I have my swing perfected." Or..."My putting stroke is grooved, I will never miss another short one again." It is not just these comments, there are many of them, such as; "Now that I've broken par, it was easy and I don't think I'll ever shoot over par again."

The golf gods tend to fall asleep every once and a while, and forget to mess you up, so the occasional good day at the range or low score is possible. Heck, you can ever make a hole in one. But if you say anything, it wakes them up and almost immediately every bounce goes the wrong way, every swing is an adventure, and your score becomes humbling. That is just the way golf gods act -- they are malevolent. Don't wake them up!!!

congrats! these kinds of milestones are so important to celebrate in this crazy game. i've been doing the same with my each of my baby steps forward this year -- makes the learning process that much more rewarding & fun.

My whole thinking about time at the range (now that I'm there multiple times a week) has done a complete 180. Instead of a chore that's a weak substitute for a round, now it's just a different form of enjoying this great game with its own challenges and fun.

I expect to have hiccups no doubt, but going from "I think its gone forever" to "well it isn't gone and it might be better than ever".....is enough to keep me playing. I was beginning to question whether it was worth it. Its tough to play consistently living in a major metropolis and not having a home course. That 1.5 hours on the range made it all worth it.

As for the golf gods, they have been hovering over me my entire career. Sometimes you just have to look at them and say..."Bring it, homeboys!"....we'll see how they like that on Friday!

Too bad you could not play that day and it never end. You will play next week or whenever and wonder how you you ever hit it so good on the range that day. When those "golf gods" wake up they love to punch balloons, just for the fun of it.

That's fantastic! When you've got your swing grooved at the range, that's the best time to drill it in. Keep repeating that good swing and your consistency will skyrocket.

video or it didnt happen...

LOL....I know I know! But who expects to actually find a groove like that! Maybe I can have him burn the video for me.

Congrats! Been there, done that and then the Golf Gods woke up....

Best advice I can give you when you're grooving is to practice the next day. Don't give your body the time to forget the feeling. I noticed a huge improvement in my ball striking when I went from practicing twice a week to practicing every day.

Great job, man. Now be prepared for the real frustration. The worst range session I ever had was the one immediately after the best range session, where I also pured nearly every single shot. I mean, the buttery 2 iron off a tight lie kind of pure. At the end of that session, I literally had the feeling that I couldn't miss. The next time I went out, I mis-hit every single ball. I mean, I didn't even get lucky. NOT EVEN ONCE. It was like I had built a consistency that turned sour. It was the first time I ever threw a club. I've found that it has way more to do with your mental state than your physical, though that certainly matters. The last few weeks, I've also been mis-hitting nearly everything. I've noticed that I look at the ball differently than I do when I'm hitting it pure. It's like, I can't imagine how you could possibly put a golf club onto the back of a ball without hitting the ground first. I'm serious, one bad sneeze is all it takes to ruin a streak.

That is great.

I agree about the golf gods. I don't know what it is but I swear as soon as I say I am putting great and making everything, I can't make another for the rest of the round. Or I have a fabulous front and think I have a chance to be around par for 18, I shoot a 42 on the back. I never ever ever like to say anything about playing well until the last putt is made.

No matter how short the walk is from the range to the first tee we can all say it's the hardest thing not to lose that range game along the way. BEST OF LUCK! Hope all goes well. Tee 'em high and hit 'em hard.

Glad you had an experience like that. Its been a little while since I felt perfect coming off the range. It really makes you feel good about the game again.

    • Just want to share a quick update with everyone. I went to the range the week before last, even though I took it easy no significant pain occurred just a slight twinge when I swung my #4 hybrid. The most encouraging news was no soreness the next morning. However I think switching back to graphite shafts is definitely gonna happen, my mp15's were fitted with X shafts and having something lighter will help.
