I was lucky enough to sneak out yesterday afternoon. We were sitting out one of the usual FL afternoon thunderstorms in the clubhouse between 9's.....along with another 25 people or so when two guys walk in and ask if we mind if they share our table. Both mid-40's, well dressed, obviously relatively affluent. They pull up and mention that they had almost finished before the storm caught them halfway down 18. One of them mentions that we need to congratulate his buddy on his first hole-in-one earlier in the round. We do so and get all the gory details. I then show him my empty beer glass and somewhat jokingly say, "just in time". He looks at me, glances around at the group in the clubhouse and says, "if you think I'm buying drinks for this whole group, you're out of your mind". Then they both pack up and head home.......without even finishing the last hole, and no, I don't think they care if the ace isn't part of a complete round.

I've never had an ace.......hell, in 40 years of playing this silly game I've never even seen one, so maybe my perspective is a little off, but if the day ever comes, I'm walking in, throwing my credit card on the bar, handing the car keys to one of my buddies, and then walking up to each and every person in the bloody place and giving them a big 'ole kiss on the mouth!

Yeh that shouldn't really count as a real hole in one as he didn't complete his round.

Got a worst one for ya - on Feb 19, 2000 I made my first ace. 3rd hole, 194 yards, 6 iron. Hit it off the toe, swore up a storm, look up after tossing my club and it's taking a weird hop on the fringe, bounces to the left and dunk!

The only problem: I was playing with a group of 24 players, and it was my birthday. My friend Bill puts his arm around me and says "Happy Birthday buddy!" as he handed me the $423 bar tab... Happy birthday indeed... Hate that damn tradition...

Similar story. I had one last year. Fortunately, we only had a group of 12 (normally 30+). I only had to pay about $130 or so.

To this day, I am scared to death of getting another one because of the large group I play with. Sometimes I'll get close and practically yell "Get out of the hole!!!" or more generally "Noooooooooooooo!!!!".

I don't see the problem here. Ace or not, just because some people use those traditions, expecting strangers to buy you beer is expecting a bit much.

I agree. Buying drinks for strangers, unless they were playing with you, is a little much. If you're a member of a club, that's another matter. But, that's usually covered by insurance which every member pays in to, so the maker of the hole in one doesn't have to pay, but everyone in the bar gets a free drink.

There was a "My Name is Earl" episode that had this as a theme. Earl found out that if someone hit a hole in one, he'd buy everyone drinks. So he followed this guy around and would sneak onto the green and kick the guys ball into the hole a bunch of times then run to the clubhouse to get his free drinks.

It ended up ruining the guys life because he gave up his job to try to join the tour because he thought he was much better than he was.

That being said, I think I would probably spring for drinks if I ever hit one. I've bought expensive rounds out before for much lesser reasons.

I always thought that it was a round of drinks, not drinks for the night. I think that good manners would suggest that those receiving the drinks should try to keep the tab reasonable. If I were a stranger in the clubhouse when someone bought a round I would order a soda or cheap beer, if anything.

I see no reason to spend over $500 to buy strangers drinks. I think the drinks "on me" is for your playing partners. And you do get stuck if you in a big group, but many clubs have "hole in one clubs" where you pay $5 or $10 to a hole in one player on your bill to cover his or hers bar tab on that day.

And I would have said (in a loud voice so everyone could hear it) "Thanks for offering to pay the tab since it's my birthday. Bill you're a great guy. Hey everybody, can you believe what a great guy Bill is offereing to pay the bar tab 'cause it's my birthday. A big round of applause for Bill, c'mon everybody."

To be blunt: your friend is a jerk. $400+ is a big enough amount that it can financial problems for some (it certainly isn't a joke.) If he was a "friend" he would have talked to the other guys, suggested everyone "pitch in and help you with the tab", and passed the hat. Instead he hands you the bill and grins? Yea, those are the kind of friends you can do without. I can't imagine just sitting there while someone gets stuck with a $400+ bar tab.

Our group's tradition is quite opposite. Each golfer needs to anti $1 per yard of the hole in one. I stuck one to 3" from 215 yards. Missed an 7 man payday by inches. When that happens, I'll buy the drinks.

LOL !

If you score Hole In One in CHINA , it will be very pricy .

Tipping for the caddies , buying drinks and food at the clubhouse. The tap may come to around 500 to 800.

Although i have not scored an ACE but i would rather keep it that way until my pocket is deep enough for the celebration.

LOL!
