I'm wanting a new set of irons and have my eyes on the Mizuno MP-62s. How good of a ball striker do you have to be to play the MP-62s? I am playing in the low 80s and am close to breaking 80 in the near future so I'm wanting a forged set of clubs. I don't want to revert back to playing in the high 80s to 90s. For you guys that play with Mizunos help me decide what to do.

Thanks: 6iron.

Buy them and ease into them slowly by replacing each club in your bag every couple of rounds.

If you want them, buy them. Learn to use them and accept it may be tough at first. Practice....a lot.

How good do you have to be? Who knows. You could be single figures with a s*** hot short game but not be able to swing the club for toffee. Groove a decent swing and you'll be able to hit anything.

Have you though of trialling them at a range or on a demo???

If you are buying them because you want a forged club, as you stated. Look into either the MP-52, 57, or 58. They are all forged as well, and are probably a better option for your handicap...

You don't have to be a pro ball striker to play them, I play the MP-60's. I would suggest trying to get to a demo day and hit them, only you can decide if they are for you.

I play the 62s. They are sweet clubs. That said, these clubs reward a good swing and punish a mishit severely.

Try This:
Go to the range with your current clubs.

Hit a 3/4 pitching at the 100 yard marker. Keep track of how many land within a 15 foot radius.

Now club up to a 7, then a 5. Keep Track.

Now, on average:
If you can hit 8/10 on target with your pitching, you are in good shape for Mp 62.

If you can hit 7/10 with your 7, you are in good shape.

If you can hit 7/10 with your 5, you are in good shape.

If you can average this or better, I'd say you have solid ballstriking skills and should use player's clubs.

Note:
I'd say hit a 3 but I know long irons aren't for everyone. My personal stats on the range resemble those I just spelled out, except I can hit 6-7/10 with a 3 iron in the 62s. Yet I sometimes struggle with the difficulty of these irons.

I also say this however. I have shaved at least 5 strokes off my handicap since picking them up... going from an 8 to at most a 3.

I hope this helps

I don't find the MP-62's to be unforgiving at all. While I'm used to playing blades, a mishit with my 695MB's would put me 10 yards short whereas with the 62's I'm only 1-2 yards short. They feel the same as all the blades I've played, just with alot more forgiveness. Maybe compared to game improvement irons they're unforgiving, but I wouldn't think you'd need to be a + handicapper to play them... just have good technique and strike the ball decent. I think you'll be fine.

I switched to the MP-57s when my handicap was mid-20s. In my view, if you hit the range once or twice a week, and can hit the ball reasonably consistently, you're good enough for Players' Irons if you want them.

By the way, there are forged clubs that aren't Players' Irons.

You cant really go off handicap because a player's handicap isnt a true representation of how good their iron play is.
If you hit your irons fairly well now and arent hitting a huge hook/slice; you will be fine with them. Just know that on days when your ballstriking isnt the best that the MPs will penalize you more than a set of GI cavity-backs would.
If you want the feel of forgings but still want forgivness, perhaps you should consider a set of MX-200s or even a set of the new MX-300s. They are GI cavity-backs so they are forgiving but they are forged so you still have the feel you are looking for.
Something to consider if you are a little bit concern about how forgiving a set of MPs would be. MPs are designed for low handicappers (MP stands for, "Mizuno professional") so if you arent hitting solid, consistent shots you may not like them.

Am I missing something? Is there a new MP-62 that isn't a standard issue forged cavity back?

No, just a lot of ignorant trolls.

I actually play the clubs. I can tell you, a mishit hurts.

I've played the MP-57 irons for some time and they are very forgiving, IMO. They are a great forged club. The 62's are more blade like and are less forgiving. I do feel Muzino forged clubs are " some what eaiser to play compared to other forged and blades. Enjoy

Apparently Im one of the, "ignorant trolls" because I wouldnt exactly call 62s a standard issue CB.

There is a cavity there, but just barely; definetly nowhere near what any of the MXs have.

You're not thinking of the new irons out this Autumn are you?

To the OP, you might want to wait and look at the MP68 (beautiful looking iron!) and/or the MP58 due out towards the end of this year. Info is already up on Mizuno web site. Some photos on a thread here too: http://thesandtrap.com/forum/showthread.php?t=27027 Personally, I've been wondering about a Fli-Hi (2-3)/MP58 (4-6)/MP68 (7-PW) mixed set sometime next year .

I am selling my Mizuno MP 62's if your interested. I used to have a set of T-Zoids and really liked them. I've only played 10 rounds with these 62's and I think there not for me . I'm shooting in the high to low 90's. I'm going to get a easier club to hit. Let me know if your interested.

The new mb's, basically from around 02 on are very forgiving compared to pre 1980 mb's b/c they have moved weight from the hosel to the sole of the club.

If you are decent ball striker there shouldn't be any real problems, just give yourself some time to adjust to the clubs. Hard to go wrong with Mizuno. Oh, and get them fitted to you. The bottom line is get what you like. You may have to put in a little more practice, but I promise you that after you have pured a shot you will be hot to do it again.

That option has been available since at least the 1950s. They're a club and half shorter, but easy to hit and the ball flies very high.
