I am playing in my first four man scramble event this Saturday. Seems like pretty simply gameplay. Cannot wait. What does everyone think of these events? Im going for 18 holes, breakfast, lunch and dinner.

If its a fund raiser, don't get sucked into buying mulligans or any of that other crap because it won't help your group's score one iota. Unless you don't mind giving the money to the charity.

Scrambles are a big draw for sandbaggers and cheats - have fun but don't expect to win anything.

well said I hate playing in them also, but somehow i get picked up as the "anchor" or whatever the drunkest dudes ALWAYS win, and have the longest drive and are closest to the pin...it's a joke the only thing I like about them, is that a majority of them are for charity I also play like crap in them, I mean i usually hit the ball well, but am inconsistent, especially w putts as I usually go last, if my team hits the putt before me, I may not putt for a few holes thats it though....

Good time to get wasted on the course and not take it too seriously. If you've been waiting to test something out on the course, now is a good time. You can also try and make insane shots. I like them..

I agree there are groups that cheat. You know which groups these are because they are always the same foursome in every tournament.

I have played probably 50 scrambles and have never been part of a group that cheated, but I have always done it for fun.

I do buy the mulligans, but only because it is for charity.

I just don't like scramble format because you do not play your shot throughout the round.

When I play golf, I want to know how I do against the course.

Exactly why I like them...

Plus, the ones I play in are always with good friends that I just like spending time with, and are for good charities. I never go to win, just to spend some time with friends, drinking beer, and having a good time without worrying about my score. They're all what you make of them. Is it a "real" round of golf? Of course not. But it's a good time if you let it be. I'm playing in one on October 8th for Habitat for Humanities, and it's an expensive round of golf, just the entry fee is $60 on a course that I'm a member of already. But the money is going to do some good. I wonder if the guys who really hate scrambles just can't relax and have fun on the golf course. Life on this earth is too short to take seriously, might as well have some fun while you're here. Who cares about the jerks that cheat? They know they cheated to get the score they got, and didn't deserve it, but as long as you feel good about yourself coming off the course, that's all that matters. I don't let other people ruin a good day of golf for charity for me.

Ive played in probably 20 of these events. I have never been part of any cheating. But there is something said for knowing you played really well and turning in a LOW card, come to find 4 idiots that couldn't hold your jock strap on the course post some insanely low number. It hurts a little....

I played in one with a buddy of mine a couple weeks back. Not only was it a lot of fun - 3 busloads of people who were hammered by 10am (unfortunately I couldn't partake in that) but I got to hang out with friends I don't see too often.

Our team did pretty well 6 under but too many pars and not enough birdies.

Good oppty to try different things on the course

I have played in 100 or more scrambles. I have never played in scramble where you aren't paired with another foursome that is playing against you so it is almost impossible to cheat. I am interested to know if the scrambles you guys play in let you play in a group by yourselves. If they do they are obviously not very smart. And why would you not buy a mulligan if it is an option? A $5 mulligan might be the difference between winning a few hundred dollars or winning nothing.

How would a foursome be paired with another foursome? Eight people playing in a group?

Well it's pretty simple. The course is closed for the day to anyone not playing in the tournament so you aren't going to slow any golfers down other than the 2 teams behind you. Im not saying this is how all scramble tournaments work but like ive said i've played in a bunch and have been paired with another team in every one.

The ones i play in usually have you by yourselves the first day and with another foursome the final day. These are only the big money tourneys, the single day, charity tourneys you are always by yourselves. There is always a cheater group in EVERY charity tourney, if it pays well. You can always pick them out because there are the ones that no one knows, They are usually either a good team taking advantage of high handicappers supporting the charity and do not cheat, just should not be there OR are they cant hit the ball 220 yards and no one seems them make a putt, yet they turn in a 57!

There fun but it brings out the dishonesty in a lot of teams. Last one I played we had a group in front of us that none of the 4 guys were hitting the fairway most of the holes, and somehow shot 15 under while we were 6 under! They must have had some incredible iron players and putters. The skins were another joke, 4 out of 6 were won by none other than the guy running the score board and skin sheets. Its a lot of fun to play but it sucks to see a bunch of dishonest chodes turning in 15 and 16 unders, while honest teams wonder how close to the top of the leader board they really were without everyones magic pencils. I just play them for fun and don't expect to win anything. Its just fun to get out there with 3 buddy's and play golf as a team for a change. I'm playing a 2 man scramble soon so that should cut down on the cheaters unless 2 teams get paired that are friends. Either way it is better than sitting on the couch with a remote in hand.

I play in two "charity" scrambles every year for different groups, and they are both run differently than every scramble I had played in previously. The first one is for a local boys and girls club. They pair your foursome up with another group and you play as 2 foursomes to discourage cheating. It didn't seem to slow things down from any other foursome scramble because you did a little more waiting on the fairway or on the green and less waiting on the tee. So it seems like it goes faster.

The second event I play in is for the Scholarship Fund at our college. The first year I played in it, it was foursomes. Two years ago, they changed it to Sixsomes, so each team had 6 guys playing on the same team. This allowed the tournament to have the same number of teams, but to take the number of people participating and add 50% more people to raise more money. The way that they work it is as follows. 6 guys tee off. Go to the best shot and 5 guys shoot from there, the person who' shot was used does not shoot the next shot. Go the best shot and repeat. This has done two things. First, it seems to have made the tournament faster than foursomes. I think having 2 extra tee shots to choose from and 1 extra shot everywhere else made the quality of golf better. Actually, I know that it has, because with the winning score was 22 under and there were some @ 21 under and 20 under. A lot of mulligans and ladies tees were purchased, which is good because the event raises upwards of $50,000 each year.

Scrambles are fun, and that is what they should be. Most scrambles are for good causes and reasons, and they are meant for everyone to have a good time. No reason to cheat, but some people still do.
