so we go golfing today and its nice and calm at my house. I get to the range and breeze is picking up. I tee of and hit a nice drive on a par 4, and the wind carried it out of bounds because it is a fenced off field.

do yall play in the wind?... I gave up after the fourth hole and did the driving range

Oh my, here in Kansas we blow hard and often. 20-30 mph is very common and sometimes it gets windy. I carried a 1 iron for 40 years, lots of them here. Hang in there on windy days, at least you won't get sweaty!

If you only play when the weather is perfect (whatever that means) you'll miss out on a lot of golf.

Learning to play well in challenging conditions is a lot of fun and will allow you to beat a lot of opponents that allow the conditions to beat them. You might not shoot a career best score in tough conditions, but you can still shoot a better score than the guy(s) you're playing against!

Played in some intense wind this weekend actually. I typically play a fade on every shot I can because it comes natural to me so the wind tends to eat them up. But that aside, you have to take it as a chance to improve your game. You don't learn anything when everything goes right, you learn when things go wrong.

Punch shots are not tough to play at all really once you get a handle on how your distances change and a low piercing shot is a beautiful thing when you get it right. You gotta keep at it.

note: I did shoot 96 on Saturday in the wind. but that's life.

I played Saturday afternoon at LAFB Raptor course here in Hampton. The wind was howling consistently 20-25mph. It really messed with me and I shot an 87. Highest round in a while so I would say that the wind is not my friend.

Moved to Corpus Christi, TX (Windsurfing Capital of the World) in 2007. My handicap went from 8.6 up to over a 12 in the first 18 months. I came from Baton Rouge, LA where the courses are typically soft and no wind, now in Corpus they are typically firmer with lots of wind (~15-40 mph).

The worst issue for me was my driver and not being able to play the wind. Just now I'm beginning to flirt with the 70's after 2 yrs of issues. I've learned to hit stinger 3w's of the tee and many more 3/4 8's & 9's. When in Baton Rouge I could hit high full wedge shots, down here you have to be more creative.

The bright side is during these last 2 yrs my chipping and putting has improved dramatically. Index is beginning to go down again, I expect a few more rounds and I can get back to single digits.

I always enjoy playing with the wind - literally. We dont have regular wind here, but if its blowing hard i certainly dont miss an opportunity to play and get creative.

Wind opens up a whole new dimension the game imo. But as a beginner or somebody who is fighting a bad slice thats probably not the best conditions for building your confidence. I remember when i tried to hit a green from 130y out into a huge crosswind with a baaad slice - the ball went like 60y towards the green and then turned 100y to the right .
The worst issue for me was my driver and not being able to play the wind.

Why not play driver - tee it low - really low - middle of the stance and play it like a 3w stinger...

Oh, and never try to hit it hard into the wind - easy swing with reduced spin does a lot more for you.

I'm working on it, still some issues with the driver. Probably more swing related than wind, but its in my head and I can rely on the 3w. I really want to get back to the driver more, but this wind has me focusing on target golf. If a 3w gets me within 150 I'm doing it. For some reason when I tee the driver low, I tend to get more draw than I want. Still working on it.

Wichita wind vs KC area wind is like night and day. Anywhere south and/or west of Salina and you'll start to notice the wind being a factor . Western Kansas gets some serious wind. I've played Buffalo Dunes in 40-50 mph winds. Number 16 is a 565 par 5, and plays directly into the prevailing South wind - your gonna need that 4 iron at least twice.

I love when it's really windy. When else do you have to hit your 180 club from 120? You just have to learn to control how high you hit it, and learn to use the wind to your advantage.

My swing thoughts:

- Negative thinking hurts more than negative swinging.
- I let my swing balance me.
- Full extension back and through to the target. - I swing under not around my body. - My club must not twist in my swing. - Keep a soft left knee

I agree, the game is a challenge but sometimes a distraction like the wind you actually play better. You forget about all the millions of swing thoughts and just try to hit the ball and move it towards the hole.

This spring we played in Guthrie, OK in a steady 30-40 mph wind, I hit a 3 iron to a 140 yard par 3, but drove a 371 par 4.

ugh..wind. Id rather play in freezing temptures than a sunny 80 degree day with 20-30mph wind gusts. Wind doesnt help me focus or be more creative or anyhting like that. The only thing im thinking is that this f**kin wind is stopping me from doing what i want to do....

I just played a round yesterday in 20-30 mph wind with gusts reaching 60 or so. I hate it because there were 450 yard par 4's that I crushed a driver and a 3 wood and still came up short. But then again, a good gust of wind allowed me to hit a drive about 350 yards :)

I shot 92 with two quads, a triple and a double. I normally shoot low 80s, but this course was tough. (75.6/136) I don't mind playing in the wind. You just have to be creative, aim for the fat parts of greens, and make sure the wind can't put you into too much trouble. I'm trying to find ways to keep the ball low, but haven't really found anything that works.

Last I heard, golf was an outdoor sport. Sometimes the wind blows. Better get used to it.

Remember Tiger Woods shooting 81 during the British Open a few years back?

Problem I have when it is windy is that I lose balance during my swing and try to hit the ball harder. One of these days, I will learn and learn to swing easy during windy days.

I will play golf in any condition--except for snow, of course.

Ive learned the tee it low and let it go instead of the tee it high let it fly works better for me in about every weather condition, I also notice the shorter tees I use now are harder to break and last longer. With the wind or against it, I hit the ball much straighter. If not for one bad hole today with moderate wind(8-10 mph) I would have done much better than normal, almost reaching a par 5 that I have never came close to reaching. Actually my longest drive today was against the wind, but was helped by 2 bounces on the cart path, probably got me an extra 50 yards. Moderate wind is ok, but anything over about 15-20 mph and it gets tough. I like when it gets cold as well, few people play then so the course is seldom crowded.

    • I’m not sure I agree. It’s just what the majority find more entertaining. Most people prefer women’s gymnastics over men in the Olympics. How much hype is there with the men’s compared to the women’s? I bet you can rattle off several big names in women’s gymnastics and only a handful of men. Women’s tennis …same thing. And sure enough, their purses are the same. However, WNBA, awful…LPGA, not near as much interest than PGA. Don’t think it’s really that complicated IMO.

    • This isn't some kind of natural fact. It's a lot more complicated than this implies.
