Yeah. Back-to-back 9's on 14. That green is eating people alive today.

And he watched Molder make a 9 right in front of him.

I can't recall ever seeing two pros go quad quad in back to back groups like that. Not even at #12 at Augusta or #17 at the TPC.

Molder was a pro? I was sure he was an amateur, putting back and forth all the time. Come to think of it, I haven't seen the amateurs today, they are probably not playing on sunday.

JB Holmes just hit a Tiger-esque shot from the rough to 2 feet. Feet off the ground, really heavy swing. It's starting to get interesting out there now.

It definitely is heating up. Three way tie between Duval, Dustin Johnson, and JB Holmes. JB about to play his 3rd shot at 18 and Dustin Johnson on the 18th tee. Duval at the range staying ready.

But you can see the anguish on Goydos's face with every swing right now.

There was an amateur cut so only the top 25 pro/am players are in today's field. Even if you miss the cut as a pro you would play today if your am partner made his cut.

There were three pros to make a 9 on the 14th today.

I feel bad for him too. That was a very difficult green if you missed it in the wrong spot. Can you imagine how tough it will be at the U.S. Open?

Hate to see that happen, esp. on a Sunday. Phil (on a Saturday IIRC, par 5 13th at Torrey) is the last time I can recall. Very different scenario for Phil, more self-destructive as it were (intentional risk-taking).

Poor Goydos indeed.

That green went beyond difficult to ridiculous. I know everyone has to play it, but at some point it becomes more about luck than skill, and when that happens, I think it detracts from the game.

I was rooting for Goydos today. He looked very calm and in control up until 14. That's golf. He knows it.

12 at August ais not as treacherous. It is not a "quad" hole.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

I fell asleep (watching it on DVR after my hockey game) while they were waiting on the group with the other 9... woke up, went in to check the highlights on the computer and saw that Goydos did "something" bad... read a little more and WOW... whish I had stayed awake just a bit longer... looked like a crazy finish.

I know this sounds silly but, I play that hole on TW all the time and it is true the only flat area on the green is behind the trap, but when did they add the roll off on the edge? I usually play for the first cut over the green on the right and pitch to the hole for a birdie. I know that is a video game but if I know to do that you would think Paul would.

    • Welcome to TST @Camjr.   We're glad you've joined.
    • Angle is not a factor. I hit the ball 100’ high. Par is net birdie. My CH is 16. The rough between the bunkers is like 10’ wide though. That’s not something you’re going to try to hit on purpose. Most of the area to the left of that is fescue/native vegetation and I’m pretty sure there isn’t a flat lie in any of it. It’s the second hole.
    • Hello all.  I'm about to be 57 yrs old, started playing when I was 16, and have quit and restarted the game more times than I can count.  I had started playing a weekly round with a friend, and finally made the jump to Senior A shafted Tour Edge clubs.  Instantly gained 10 yds with an easier swing (why didn't I make that jump sooner???).  Glad to be a part of the group. Cheers all,
    • I think I like this hole.  It is a clear "Risk-Reward" choice.  Since most of the shots in your cone cleared the bunkers I would say they are a minor risk and not a big issue.  Playing the aggressive line may give you 70ish yards in from what looks to be playable rough while conservative play is 120ish from fairway.  I know you said 70 vs 120 is minor for you but how does the approach angle in impact your results?  I figure both strategies are playing for Birdie since holing out from either is mostly luck. Looking at your proximity hole I think it says @ 50 feet when hitting from the fairway from 100-150 and 40 feet if hitting 50-100 from the rough.  Neither of those is an easy birdie putt.   I like the approach angle from the rough between the bunkers & the adjacent tees over the angle from @ 120 in the fairway but I really do not like the idea of hitting onto the adjacent tee boxes and that may impact my confidence with making the shot.  Also, too far left may be a worse approach angle then from the fairway short of the bunkers. For me this may come down to how confident do I feel when I reach that tee box.  If I am stroking it well off the tee leading up to the hole I would try for over the bunkers and the better angle in but if I am struggling that day I would likely opt for the fairway to take more bad stuff out of play.
