I'm seriously considering dropping my LW for a distance club to fill the gap between my 3 wood and my 3 Hybrid. Any thoughts on which is more versatile and useful - a 5 wood or a 2 Hybrid?

5 wood, because you already have a 3 hybrid. Personally I think your gaps are screwed up. But once again its all an opinion. Heres my setup. 3 wood-3 hybrid-3 iron. Distances. 260-280(depending off the ground or tee), 230-240, 210-220

Yeah - My gaps are quite different than yours. 3-wood = 200-210 (off tee, I am way too inconsistent hitting it off the turf). 3-hybrid = 180-190 off the turf. I'm looking for something I can hit off the turf 200-205 average.

I actually game the 2h. My gaps are 3w/265 2h/245 3h/225-230 4h/210-215 (measured by Skycaddie)
The 2h is just much more playable and workable for me. especially from the tee.

You might split the difference and try a TM Raylor, 19 degree version. It has a longer shaft than a hybrid, and has a boat-hull sole which means less turf drag on hits out of rough.

I think you can improve your consistency by hitting down on your 3 wood slightly. It helps it get off the ground and go alot higher. Just take a look t Tiger hitting a 3 wood. Also, its not the distance that is messed up, its just the difference of distance. I try to go for 10 yards for irons, and then 15-20 yards for woods(not driver).

Thanks Garrett! That's sound stuff ... besides if I can get my 3 wood off the deck, it saves me a few bucks ... I'll work on that.

I love hitting my 3 wood a shorter distance. Grabbing a bit down on the shaft, shorter and more compact backswing, very controlled swing. I almost can't hit a bad shot that way. I'll lose some distance and end up where I wanted.

If you have trouble hitting the 3 wood off the deck, work on hitting down on the ball. Don't try picking it off the ground, hit down on it. I've managed hitting a 3 wood off a divot once. Came up a bit shorter than usual, but I made good contact with the ball. Hit it like an iron, ball first, then ground. Don't have to take a divot, but it's no problem to ruffle the grass and a bit into the dirt.

The 3 wood is my favourite club in the bag, because I can get great distance, but also hit shots like this. Always with very good control compared to the driver. Only hit my driver if I need the ball to go over 240 yards from tee. Using the 3 wood off the deck is no problem, I tee it as low as I do with my shortest irons, don't want to pop the ball way up into the air.

I'm not using it as a pin seeker, unless I'm in a position where I can reach the green. How often do you have a 200+ approach shot? I don't need to fill every yard from 200 and upwards. 99% of those shots are hit from the tee. Only difference it makes is what kind of iron I'll have for the approach shot.

I hear that! Maybe the way for me to go is to work on increasing my driver distance - then I would have no need for a 200+ approach club ...

I was trying out some used 5 woods at a local golf store last weekend, didnt purchase any though. Im not a long hitter by any means, but I was getting good distance on the simulator, tried 3, taylormade burner, wilson staff and one of the adams dont remember which one. I was hitting some of my longest shots off the mat as far as my driver(longest was with the adams), in the 220-225 yard range and averaging about 205. 205-210 yards can be done with my 3 hybrid but i have to really nail it so I think a new 5 wood is the way to go, you might find you will end up using it more than your 3 wood off the deck. Id try out a few to see what you like.

I would go hit some and find out for yourself. Do you have access to a shop that will let you demo clubs? Or better yet, a shop with an outdoor range?

I personally play a 2 hybrid, but I don't carry a 3 wood. Mine is actually a 15.5 degree I believe. I like the versatility of the hybrid very much - I can hit it high and low, from the rough or off the tee. For me it is a 230-240 club. For long approach shots (generally long par 5s), I sometimes wish I carried a 3 wood because I'm often out of reach. However, the odds of me puring a 3 wood off the deck from 260+ aren't good, so I keep the hybrid for the versatility and accuracy.

For my slower swingspeed the 5wood works better than a 2 hybrid.

I pulled an old Callaway Steelhead 5 wood out of an old set of clubs and took it to the course today. Had 3 chances to use it on 200 or so yard approach shots ... in 2 of the 3 situations it works great. Weird deal is I have never been able to hit this club in the past, but I have been working harder on my swing the past several months and apparently its beginning to show.

      Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.

      Of course there's not a simple or knowable answer here. But the whole Caitlin Clark phenomenon is a nice example IMO. Suddenly there was wall to wall media coverage and national attention and... the women's tournament got similar ratings to the men's and much higher ratings than the men in the final four. With every indication that there will be some portion of the uptick that remains going forward. And there's the whole element that Sue Bird brought up. That basketball needed a pretty enough white superstar guard. One who looks like the "cute little white girls" that describes most of the soccer USWNT that's been able to achieve much higher popularity than any version of women's basketball, which is dominated by black players and none of any race who could be described as little... I do think women's sports are in a good place to start taking off more though. It's really only in the coming 5-10 years that the majority of girls will start to come of age with post Title IX grandmothers (as in their grandmothers were allowed to be serious athletes). I don't follow men's or women's basketball much, but in golf for sure the women's tour has gotten much deeper over the past 20 years and only looks to keep going in that direction. I've heard the same about women's basketball. And the patriarchal attitudes that socialized girls out of sports and everyone out of women's sports fandom aren't gone but have def diminished.
