The Players is the PGA Tour’s championship. It is the championship of a major golfing body, just like three of the four currently recognized majors. It also has a very strong field. Not the most compelling case, but the case for the Masters to be a major is almost non-existent.

The Masters is a tournament held every year by one golf club. It’s the championship of nothing. Yes, it has a lot of tradition, but it’s mainly self-promotion and a fabulous golf course. Maybe I’m put off because it’s run by a bunch of stuffed shirts and they hire thugs for marshals, but I think this tournament is vastly overrated. And it’s the championship of nothing.

They're both played every year on the same course every year and the top 50 players in the world are typically entered.

Neither one is my favourite of the 5 tournaments mentioned, but since I think island greens are lame, I'll vote for the green jacket.

Ignorant nonsense which has been rehashed dozens of times on every golf forum. Fact of the matter is, it is rated extremely highly by players and fans alike. Can't recall ever reading an interview where a player said he didn't rate the Masters because it's the "championship of nothng". You might have a chip on your shoulder because you could never be a member of the club, but you can't deny that it is, in the eyes of many, the major that all pros would love to win. I suggest that you read "The Making of the Masters" by David Owen. It might make you realise how stupid your post is. As for your comment "but the case for the Masters to be a major is almost non-existent." It is a major. So what if it's an invitational. People can crap on forever about how it has the weakest field, etc, etc., but that sort of "logic" just shows that the person arguing knows zero about the game.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Im not going to get into which is a better tourney, since both are quite excellent, but why the bashing of the Masters? Great venue, great fans/atmosphere/history.

WOW . . . Why didn't you just lob a hand grenade in here!?

I don't see anyone stripping the Masters of major status anytime soon. I think you could make a case for The Players to be a "true" fifth major were it not for that little deal called the "Grand Slam" that has been so elusive for so long. If somebody can't get four in the same season, it's not likely they would get five. This is better off left alone, as is . . . IMHO

I find the Masters to have a lot more flair and excitement than the Players. The Players is hyped up a lot, and it's a great tournament, sure, but on par with a Major?I just don't see that.If it didn't have the 17th, large parts of that course would be pretty dull. You look at past winners of both tournaments.. and while The Players did have some great past winners, it's nothing in comparison to some of the names to have wont the Masters recently. That says a lot about the quality of the tournament in my opinion.

Wowww, I wouldn't go that far. I love the Players and TPC Sawgrass as much as anyone, but it is not a major. It would be number 5 in my book, maybe sneaking ahead of the PGA for 4th, but not the Masters.

I disagree with the Player's being more of a Major than the Masters.

I enjoy the Masters the least out of all 4 majors though.

My list: US Open, British Open/PGA(tie), then the Masters.

The original post is absurd. (I'm suprised that anyone would rate the PGA Championship above the Masters. I enjoy watching the Masters more than any other tournament, but I know it's less significant than the British Open or the US Open.)

Hopefully, this thread dies a quick death.

Without a doubt the most ridiculous post I've read on this forum... The Masters is not a Major? That's just stupid... The Players is a big time tournament and I stop down to watch it but rank it higher than The Masters? NFW... Congrats, you drew me offsides faster than you can say Bobby Jones

Evidently this guy couldnt get tickets or got thrown out of Augusta for something. I have been to both the Master and a US Open(Pinehurst) and the Masters was far and away more impressive. Granted the US Open is a much harder test of golf, and I love watching Par win.

I kinda agree..the masters will still be the masters without have the major title attached to it. If anything, the players and the masters should be on the same type of level being right under the offical majors. The world matchplay or some kind of eastern hemisphere based torunament should be the 4th offical major.

OP, you are way off here. I think the only opinion on this topic that counts is that of the players who are in the tournament and CLEARLY 95% of all tour players have great respect for The Masters and it's the major they would pick if they could only have 1.

There was a poll in golf digest last year of tour players asking them their favorite major and The Masters was the highest percentage of the four. So you can't really argue with the guys that play the game but I'm sure you'll try.

Where are the "dull holes"? That course is downright disgusting. (In a good way)
