After reading the latest thread on 300 yard drives, I got to wondering how many people really truly claim to AVERAGE 300 yards and what their (reported) handicaps are. Personally, I have my opinion, but I'll hold it as to not influence the poll. Like I have that kind of influence, yeah, but anyway...

Sorry if the answers aren't exact or don't point to what you would like analyzed. This is my wabi sabi poll -- imperfect and temporary, just like everything in the world. If you don't like it, goonie goo goo, roll Charlie around...

0-10 and just under 300.

BTW, I've only swung "all out" with the driver about 3 times this year. All my 300+ drives were on a smooth swing - hard, but not "full out" since those usually end up in the woods.

My average is legitimate 270-280 yards on my swings. I no longer care for to even attempt 300+ yards anymore. I'd rather keep it in play and find my suite spot with an iron then play a god awful lie. Plus, when you look at the PGA Tour official stats, only 6 players average 300 yards plus ( http://www.pgatour.com/r/stats/info/xm.html?101 ). My handicap is much higher because of last years play, but because I no longer worry about distance, I have lowered my handicap a full 7+ points this year and am looking to bring it down lower by years end. 300 is nice...but not important

270-280 average. I've hit some 300+ one's before but it would be far fetched to call it average.

Average??? errrrrrr. I would guess i average 200 or just below that. Of the drives that I deem worthy enough to measure with GPS i average 220-225. The longest drive I ever measured was 268.

1, sometimes 2 over 300 per round, usually average around 270 for an 18 hole round. Have had recent rounds where I averaged closer to 250, and some closer to 290-distance is obviously affected by course layout, difficulty, course conditions, weather, and how I'm swinging that day. This is purely with driver, I often tee off with a 16-20* hybrid, 2 iron, or 4 iron.

Might pop one or two out past 300 every round and these swings normally come on wide fairway Par 5s. I like to stay in the 270 range, which for me is a nice solid controlled swing.

Waiting for summer...

Only 6 PGA professionals are averaging over 300 this year.

Bingo.

Everyone overestimates how far they average. The driving distance stat is misleading. There's a better category called "average distance, all drives." No one averages 300 or more in this category. I'd be willing to bet most of them members here average right in the 180-250 range at sea level, and a few of the better players average from 250-280. The average man averages 208 yards, and from what I've seen, that number is fairly accurate for even young men. The longest driver I've ever played with averaged around 250, and he just crushed it, day in and day out, and he could hit the driver off the deck better than most can hit it off the tee. Of course, guys think they average 250-280. 300 is just obscene, and rare. It would take an average clubhead speed of around 122 mph with an average smash factor of 1.48. If you can get those numbers, then odds are you're at least on the mini tours.

Shanks there's a junior member at my club that hits 280m(310 yards) drives quite often.

I've seen him hit a 330m drive(360 yards) but that was with a huge tailwind. He isn't normal though, he can hit a 150m (165 yard) gap wedge. The sound off of his iron shots is scary. Forget about averages, they don't give a real idea on driving distances. Average "good shot" is more realistic. Most of the pro's good drive's would be 300+ yards

Have you considered trying to get him into long drive contests? He could easilly compete in the local, maybe even regional level.
