Do you use the same grip when putting as you would for a normal shot?

No, I use the reverse overlap, which is the most conventional putting grip.

Reverse overlap with my index finger pointed down the shaft. I've been searching for some tweak to my putting to make it feel more natural as of late, and extending my index finger down the shaft helped me hit straighter. I just played my first round using that technique, we'll see if it stays.

But in short: No.

I claw as well....

I am fairly new to it, but I love the consistancy of it and the aiming. I am struggling a bit on the distance control though.

My biggest problem was pulling putts, I missed everything low....

But I pushed my hands away from my body a little bit more and it helped keep me more steady. I'm pretty good from 6 feet in now, and getting better as I get farther away, but I solve that by just chipping everything within three feet

I use a reverse overlap for putting and chipping. I use a pendulum-stroke when I'm chipping within 40 feet of the green and therefore use my putting grip. This really increases the feel and consistency of my chips.

No, I use reverse overlap. I changed into that some three years ago as I discovered that a longer putting sessions made my back hurt. This was due to the fact that when using normal grip the back shoulder is quite a bit lower than the front one. Using reverse grip that changed and no I have no problem practising longer periods now.

Also I found that reverse overlap is somehow steadier and easier to control the putter than normal grip.

I used to, but have recently switched to cross-handed or left hand low (whatever you want to call it). I have found out I have much better accuracy with it on longer putts. I will still use a regular grip on shorter putts when it feels more comfortable standing over the ball, but it is all slowly going to left hand low.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Interesting, I've always used my usual regular overlapping grip for putting. I'll give the reverse overlapping a shot, although my putting has gotten much better, I only had 1 3-putt the last two rounds.

I dont interlock when i put and my right hand thumb goes straight down the shaft as opposed to being over the front of the grip if that makes any sense.

I use the same 10 finger grip when putting, except I put my right index finger down the shaft.

I use the same 10 finger grip when putting, except I put my right index finger down the shaft.

Be careful with that index finger. It may easily start leading and then u no longer have good control of u'r putter. I used to do that also years back and one good pro told me to avoid that or make sure my right (lower) hand would not control the putter on downswing.

Now I have my left index finger on the shaft but as it is the leading hand it is no problem.

I also use a left-hand-low putting grip, but I use it for every putt and not just long putts like you say you do. I had a horrible tendancy to break my wrists through the stroke with a "normal" grip, and with the left-hand-low grip it forces me to maintain my wrist angle through the stroke. It felt really weird the first few times I'm used it, but now it feels more natural that any other grip.

    • I kind of like this interpretation especially if you think about it the unplayable rule would probably put you in a better spot.  using back on the line releief.
    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
