Is low HDCP = more fun?

Was there a time in your golf when you enjoyed golf the most?

For me, it was about 10 years ago when I broke 90 (didn't keep a HDCP at that time) for the first time.

I suppose I enjoyed golf the most when I first started playing. Before I decided "I could be good at this game". I still enjoy it a great deal, but now I enjoy it most when I am just playing, and not worrying about "being good".

A low handicap is something to be proud of but it can be a TON of work to maintain. My lowest sustained handicap was when I played competitively in high school and I stayed around a 2.3 over the season. That was also when I had no job and virtually no responsibilities. Now with a wife and two kids it's simply impossible for me to maintain that handicap and that amount of practice. Frankly I'm happier now hovering between a 6-10. I can get out, play a couple of times a week, maybe hit some balls and really enjoy the game.

At the end of the day, you have to find the spot that suits your goals and makes the game enjoyable. Someday I'll grind down to 0.0 again but that won't be until both of my kids are off to college.

I enjoy it a lot now. I enjoy being a somewhat accomplished player and being looked upon as being a good player...

But what I enjoy most is the difficulty of trying to improve.

I suppose it was when I started scoring in low 80's/high 70's. I meant my short game was coming around. Nothing frustrates me more than chuncking a chip or blading a pitch.

Golf is more fun now. When I was a 12 handicap, I didn't have a clue about the game. I just hit the ball, found the ball (sometimes), then hit it again. I had no concept of the subtleties of the game, such as: What do different lies do to ball flight? How does wind affect it? How do you allow for sidehill lies? Where to aim in order to give you the best chance at par? What shape shot should I choose? What is the golf architect telling you about how to play a hole?

As I've gotten more knowledgable and more proficient, I can now factor in many different things before selecting a club and making a swing. To have the shot come off perfectly is truly a satisfying experience.

I enjoy golf much more now than when i was slicing all my drives and chunking many irons/chips. Hoping it to enjoy more when i lower the penalties and win over my battle with my own stupidity on course.

I'm curious, can you give a couple of examples?

The lower my handicap goes the more I enjoy the game. Not because my handicap is lower, but rather because it is my improving play that moves my handicap down and it is my improved play that I find enjoyable.

I think I enjoyed it most when I first started. My dad was as new to the game as I was and we would both play together on a saturday morning on the par 3 course. It was a bit of a drives and several hours of entertainment. Apart from that playing with my friends has been one of the most rewarding experiences. As much as I took the game seriously and shot good scores, there was plenty of fun to be had too. I miss it!

i enjoyed it most back in college when i was playing at scratch expecting at least par on every hole. but the double edged sword is that now i have incredibly high expectations.

I enjoyed the game as a beginner, as a 20, 15, 10, and I still really enjoy playing golf.

I'd enjoy even having the opportunity to play right now. I have no time for it as is. I'm a bogey golfer with the occasional moment of pure brillance/utter stupidity thrown in(some more than others some days...).

I cannot think of anytime i have not enjoyed the game immensly while playing. Even on those forgettable days with double digits in the rearview mirrors halfway through the inward 9.

Ah well. Bitch bitch bitch...

I am actually enjoying my handicap now, but I guess it would be lower next month though. I am finding my consistency effectively and broke my 90 last month with an 88 and followed it with a 85 and made a 84 yesterday. I have started playing 2 and a half years ago, and my friends at our club said my progress is acceptable, what ever that means. My Game was very stagnant in the first year but I have noticed faster drop of my handicap when I swallowed my pride and controlled my shots. I changed my clubs last month to a Ping G5 though the Ping G15 is already in the market. But i like these clubs better now and hopefully I can top my lowest score with in this month....." One small step at a time"....

I hope by the end of this year I could lower my handicap to a 13 or something....

I enjoy it much more now that I can get into the mid 80's. This is the first year I've broken 90 and been hitting between 85 and 92. I actually enjoy it the most when I just go out and casually play without keeping score; I am more relaxed and strike the ball better when I'm not counting strokes.

When I first started playing the game it was just to figure it out and be able to play it for real, as oppsed to drink at an outing and be somewhat competitve. I'm also the type of person that likes to be the best in everything so a lower handicap and lower scores make it more enjoyable for me. Now when I say the best I would say for my class (which would be never playing college or even high school golf and never taking a lesson) completely self taught (im proud of that) I don't really like playing against true golfers. Would rather play against ex-football players and ex-baseball players or really anyone that golf wasn't THEIR sport. Same way as a golfer wouldn't want to strap on pads against me.

Probably at about 16 HDCP. I broke 90 most of the time in these seasons, and people told me I had a lot of potential.

Most frustrating was a couple of seasons at 12. It drove me crazy that I couldn't quite break 80.

Focus, connect and follow through!
