I just picked this game up a couple of weeks ago after watching some golf on the satellite. I used to be into tennis, basketball, and cycling for years then quit doing sports for probably 15 years. I thought I needed to get into shape and why not pick up golf and do some walking. I just went into a Dick's Sporting Goods and bought some stuff. I didn't go top of the line because I didn't know if I would like it or not. I took a half hour lesson and got up enough nerve to take it to the course. I picked out a 9 hole facility near here that wouldn't be crowded. It would be good to learn on and also I wouldn't be holding up someone elses afternoon by me chasing a ball all around the course trying to get to the green. It only cost 10 dollars to play too. The first time out was quite disastrous and also humorous but most of all it was fun. It was also quite a workout pushing that little cart up and down the hills.

I had 14 days of vacation coming up so I decided that it would be a good time to sign up for 5 one hour lessons with a PGA Pro. I started out with the beginner program and wanted them spaced out a few days between lessons because I wanted to play 9 holes pretty much everyday. The first was the grip, stance, and then hitting with a 7 iron. We did get to hit with the driver also. I was pretty proud of myself of the way I hit. The second lesson was putting. These greens are 100 times better than the course I played on and it was fun. Each time playing the 9 holes, my score was dropping alot just from those few lessons. The third lesson was chipping from all different angles and distances. My scores really dropped once I knew what to do when faced with those on the course. I just couldn't wait to get out and play and get in some good exercise. The fourth lesson was last Wednesday and we went back to just hitting because my drives were getting a little erractic and I wanted to know about hitting hybrids and woods. My irons the last time out on the course had put a pretty big smile on my face because I was hitting them nice and high and straight as can be. I had the distances down pretty good for basically guessing on how far I could hit them. I hadn't got time on the driving range to write down distances for each club.

Everything changed when I got home from the fourth lesson. I had about a 50 minute ride home and was debating on going back to the 9 hole course and risk getting there when normal working hours people would be getting there. It would have been another 1/2 hour ride to go golfing. Or I could just take the motorcycle out for a ride.

Well, I should have taken up the golf outing. I was rounding a turn with the motorcycle and a truck is in my lane facing me. I did everything that could have possibly been done in that situation and hit head on. I braked as hard as could be done and still had control but the distance just closed too fast. It is amazing what you see as your flying through the air after hearing the most horrifying noise and then getting slammed down hard into the other lane of traffic. Then the paremedics are cutting off all your clothes in the middle of the road, putting on neck braces, backboards, and IV's and then your airlifted out to who knows where. It's not fun asking where you are when 10 people are standing over you giving you xrays, cat scans, and and more IV's. Then your taken back in for another scan because they didn't get a good picture on one. As of right now, my golf game is in a holding pattern because my left side is hurting so bad. I can't wait for the next round of meds in 1/2 hour. Also, why the hell am I up at 5:30? Maybe I could have got the other guy to take that 5th lesson for me, How to Drive!

So people, if your in doubt on what to do..... go golfing.

I had a softer landing than you obviously, and gave up riding soon afterwards... Picked up clubs a few years later on. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

I ordered a Chicken and an Egg on the Internet, to find out which came first... I'll keep you posted!

Someone got me before I got into golf. They rear ended my M/C on an interstate one night and kept going. Yep, I remember lowsiding then highsiding and then seeing the tops of small trees before slamming into the ground. Bled to death in the median (spleen exploded) but, the hospital was just off the exit so, they were able to get me get me going again after some fast work and 3 "jumpstarts" of the heart.

I hope you're able to recover quickly. It may take some time getting back into golf though.....

get well soon, my friend... but all the reponses are the exact reason I avoid bikes at all costs. it's not the bike rider whos' to blame(most of the time), but that don't matter when yer heading to the 'Pital in the back of the meat wagon......

Wow! Best wishes for a speedy recovery my friend and it's good to hear that you are in good spirits.

As for your story, it underlines why I will never purchase a Motorcycle and is why I try to convince my friends to sell their's

Bro youve been victimized by the Death Machine. I will never endorse my friends, love'd ones ever riding a motorcycle. Because as in your story your trusting your safety to those flying by you in 2ton metal monsters going 60+mph in most places.

I luckily got to play a scramble 2 months ago with a friend of mine(originally my sisters friend). He was an avid golfer and trained/competed in many triathlons. This was until a 17yo girl driving down the highway in her Expedition while TEXTING!!!!! swirved for no reason out of her lane and sent completely wrecked him off of his Harley at 65mph. My friend spent the next 4months in a comma suffered brain damage and amnesia not remembering me after the accident until I showed him pictures of us. Also he forgot like 90% of his golf game lol, your lucky that you are concsious and recovering he has to live with this for life...

Sorry to hear about your accident. Scary stuff.

Whenever you get the strength, you should do whatever golf related things your body will allow. Even if you can't take full swings, doesn't mean you shouldn't practice putting and chipping, if your body will allow.

Hope you have a speedy recovery!

I thought this was going to be a thread about someone giving up the game because they didn't do good after picking the game up. I was shocked when I read that last paragraph, good luck with the recovery, hope it's fast!

Thanks guys!

I was wearing a Shoei full face helmet, Alpinestars half height boots, gloves, riding jacket with shoulder/elbow/arm/back and tail bone protection. I can watch the golf on tv while I'm in and out of being awake but just can't play it. The jacket, pants, belt, shirt, and underwear are all cut to pieces. The helmet will be toast too. One of these days, I'll be able to lift my arm and hopefully these terrible headaches will go away.
