I was told that only good golfers carry anything with a 3 in their bag. I.E. 3 wood, 3 iron? What's that about?

i dont ever touch my 3 iron... ever... maybe once every few rounds. I'd rather choke down on my 5 wood then hit my 3 iron. The only action my 3 iron gets these days is when I use it as alignment sticks when i'm at the range.

3 wood on the other hand I use very often. I tee off on short par 4's and narrow fairways with 3 wood. long par 5 approach shots, i take a 3 wood etc.

i think a lot of great players, pro's included, have replaced theri 3 iron with a 3 hybrid or 4 hybrid, but again, its personal preference for most.

I'm not even sure how you'd complete a bag without anything with a 3 on it.

A 3-Wood is a fantastic "backup" driver if you're struggling with your normal driver. A 3-iron is a matter of preference. I certainly wouldn't discourage a player who preferred a utility metal (or 7-wood) to replace their 3-iron with such. But there are people who love their 3-iron, and I wouldn't take it out of their hands if it helps them.

On average my 3 iron gets used about twice a round. But I don't recommend that beginners or high cappers carry one and attempt to use it during around until they're proficient. At the range is a different story-should hit it every time you go. I've always played a 3 wood, so I don't have any problem with it-though I usually go with a 16* hybrid now, and agree that most amateurs would be better served with a 16*-18* 4 or 5 wood.

I don't know but I've played my last 2 rounds using driver --> 5i, completely ignoring my 3 wood and 3 hybrid. I actually gave my 3 hybrid to a friend yesterday and put my 4 iron back in the bag. I kept the 4 hybrid for punching out, run ups, etc. I haven't had a good 3 wood swing since high school for whatever reason. It mind f*&ks; me when I'm at address. If I need accuracy off the tee I sacrifice yardage and just hit the 5 iron (and hopefully will have my 4 iron working at some point).

That's what they said about 1 irons when I started playing. Of course, today's 3 iron is the rough equivalent of the 1 iron Hogan hit to the 72nd hole at Merion in 1950, so I guess it's all relative. I'm no Tour pro, but I'm no fan of hybrids either, so I carry a 3 iron and am able to hit it reasonably well. I guess my point is to not listen to blanket statements like that and give it a try for yourself. If you have trouble getting it airborne, by all means give a 3 hybrid a try. If you hit it well, and feel comfortable doing so, feel free to leave it in the bag.

That was in one of the golf magazines a month or so back. I'm working on abiding by the rule, I really am. My 3-wood only has 13' of loft, so it's really a 2-wood and my 3-iron might soon be replaced with a 2-iron. That abides by the rule right?

HAHA - no it isn't. Hitting a vintage 1-iron (and hitting it well) is much more difficult than hitting a new long iron. Today's 3-iron is the equivalent of a 1990s driving iron.

I carry a 3 wood so by implication I must be a good golfer - wow! However flattering that statement might be to those of us who carry 3 woods or 3 irons (or both), it's patently ridiculous. As one poster has already said many golfers of average ability use the 3 wood as an alternative to a driver on short, tight holes. Conversely, many of the "good golfers" I know who carry 3 irons now have a hybrid of some sort in their bag because they're easier to hit, although that hasn't been the case for me.

I meant from a loft perspective in getting it airborne.

I have an old set of Ram TW Grind blades that I take out to the range every so often. They wouldn't even qualify as "vintage", and the blade is about three quarters of the length of my 690CBs. To catch these bastards on the sweet spot requires coming within about an eighth of an inch of shanking the ball.

Nonsense. Even a high-handicapper should carry a 3-wood. IMO a 3-iron is also a handy club to have for windy days and when you need to hit the ball out from under a tree.

I don't think there's any debate that you fall in the "good" category.

The Rams Grinds were very hard to hit. I tried to hit those once - ouch. Maybe that's why I have so much respect for Tom Watson.

Sean - Santa isnt real homey....sorry I had to break it to you

but that sweater sure is nice!!! no 3i here, but do bag a strong 3w (13.5º back up driver) 3w only gets used off the tee I used it off the turf in a sramble once and hit a long par 5 in 2 (to 5 feet for EAGLE).....it was quite amazing actually!! hahaha! I cover the distance gap nicely bewteen my 4i and 5w plus i need the room for my 60º, which has much more use than a 3i ever will
