I've been using face balanced putters about as long as I can remember (like the Ram Zebra and more recently the Rife Two2Bar Mallet), but in most books like Utley's there is à preference towards Anser type putters.

Which type do you prefer and why ?

i prefer scotty cameron newport 2 designs or the 2.5 which i believe would be considered anser types. I like them because it allows me to have a 'natural' stroke better than a face balanced putter. what i mean by natural is the arc of the stroke. The stroke I use is similar to a door hinge stroke. slightly opens on the way back, comes back to square at impact and the toe slightly closes for the follow through while staying on a straight line. This is more natural in my opinion as opposed to trying to have a straight back and straight through stroke. I used to try and do that and then switched to just letting it flow.

I believe it depends upon your putter swing plane. I switched from a toe weighted putter to a face weighted putter about 6 years ago when I began putting left hand low. That change seemed to have changed my swing plane to more of a pendulum motion from the open to closed plane. So if your motion is straight back and straight forward I believe you'll have better results with a face balanced putter.

I also feel that a toe weighted putter, with a open to close stroke feels more natural, and I also like the looks much better. Although, when I tried the pendulum motion (Pelz style), a face balanced worked properly, but it it felt too handsy to me.

That is what I feel ..... Too Handsy, maybe going to the "Utley" style.

I've been practicing with both a standard-length toe weighted Newport 2 and a face weighted belly putter recently. It is my conclusion that one can putt very poorly with either!

i would say that most people use an anser style putter because more than 70% of the pro's they see on tv use them. people gravitate towards what they see on the tube.

i prefer the anser type because i put with it better....but everyone has different requirements.

Yes, if only I had a ProV!

Anyway, apparently all conventional putters are fatally defective and you should get one of these. http://www.axis1golf.com/
