Anyone have and funny/crazy stories of playing with strangers?

Today I got paired up with a threesome at my local goat track. They were two brothers, roughly my age, and their dad. The two brothers were total gym-jockies, muscled up dudes. These guys were topping 75% of everything they took a swing at, and generally swinging out of their shoes. But....one guy managed to drive a 260 yd par 4 with a nice high draw, and 2 putt for birdie after scoring 10+ strokes per hole for the previous 5 holes. Nice!

Had a guy who was cleaning his clubs after every single shot and would be cleaning something in between holes. He would jack off at the ball cleaner like it was his job. Only if the clean clubs and balls helped him better it would've justified it.

Got paired up with these two guys who showed up to their 9am tee time still drunk from the night before. They yelled some priceless things at their shanks such as SUCK DONKEY D*** right as another group walked by. I was so embarrassed to be playing with these guys... To top it off at the 17th hole one of them chipped it over the green on a few ft chip and just started an incredibly offensive impersonation of what he called his "Roy the Retard impression"

Terrible round. Please, if you go golfing, don't show up wasted and have 10 more throughout the round. I hope he didn't drive home

1st post, greetings to everyone

I go out as a single quite often. Mostly it's a pleasant experience.

A few times I've been grouped with beginners, and that's fine so long as they keep the pace. But it drives me nuts to see someone hack their way up to the green, taking 9 or 10 strokes to get there, then on the putting green marking their 4th putt when it's a few inches from the cup. Arrgggh! Pick the damn thing up or putt it out. Please, end the agony.

One time I got grouped with Super Dad and Wonder Son. For 18 holes I had to listen to Super Dad tell me how wonderful a dad he was and how wondrous his rather sullen 20-yr-old son was. It was a nonstop monologue of inanities and banalities. But what really got under my skin was when Wonder Son hit deep into the woods, found 'a' ball, brought it out of the woods directly towards the pin, placed it nice and fluffy in light rough, then chipped it in. Well, Super Dad was jumping out of his shoes with excitement at how Wonder Son just scored a birdie! A birdie? I conceded that it was a nice chip but snorted at the mention of birdie.

Conversely, I once got paired with a teen. He didn't say maybe 5 words the entire time, but he was really into his game, and he could really hit the ball. One of the most enjoyable rounds of golf I've played. Both of us just concentrated on our round.

The absolute worst was a threesome in which one of the guys hit into the group in front on two occasions. The final straw was on the #9 tee box. We all hit, and three of us were walking ahead, when all of a sudden a ball screamed over our heads when we about 30 yds in front of the tee box. This same idiot decided to hit a second shot, couldn't be bothered to tell us, and just blasted away while we were in front of him. I lost it, yelled a bunch of obscenities at him, and walked off the course. Who needs that kind of aggravation?

But like I said at the beginning, playing with strangers is usually fine. It's just on rare occasion that I've been teamed up with some strange strangers.

When I was at the University of Alabama in the early 1990s, me and two other friends were paired up with a really nice guy from Canada. He was in Tuscaloosa visiting his cousin, who was also a student, and while she was in class, he decided to squeeze in a round of golf. We had a really nice time, and he fit right in with our taking it seriously... but not too seriously attitudes.
When we finish up, he thanks us for letting him play along, and then says:
"Hey guys... I gotta two-four of Molson in the trunk... iss hot... but we could trink it."

I got paired up with a pastor and a mexican gang member once. That was probably the best round ever. Nobody wanted to step on anyones toes, so we just played golf and at the end it was "god bless you" and "thanks holmes" lmao! it was great.

A long time ago I was playing by myself very early in the morning on a weekday and the course was empty. Forest Park Golf Course in midtown St. Louis is surrounded by city. The ninth hole runs right along Skinker Blvd, a monster 600 yd par 5. Waiting on the tee was a homeless looking guy, dirty and smelly, and holding an old plaid junior bag with no strap and 3 or 4 clubs sticking way too far out of it.
"You mind if I play along?" he asked. I was kind of reluctant to say yes, but I figured I'd let him hit off with me and then leave him in the dust and just play on ahead. He said his name was Stevie and he didn't talk very much. His clubs were as near as I could tell an old maple 3-wood, a 5-iron, an old wood shafted niblick with no number on it and a rusty Patty Berg putter. He didn't have a ball so I gave him a few of my beaters and some broken tees I had in my pocket. We hit off and damned if the guy wasn't good. His swing was a bit unorthodox, he spread his legs wide, locked his knees and would swing with his upper body, but he was surprisingly good. He didn't say much, and he didn't give me his scores, but I figure over the 7 or 8 holes he played with me he was at least a couple below par. We hit into the 16th fairway which starts back toward the clubhouse and he was chased off by a greenskeeper in a golf cart who seemed to know him very well. As Stevie ran off he thanked me for letting him tag along and the free balls. I'd also given him a warm Bush-Bavarian I had stashed in my bag from the prior weekend so I think he liked me. It was one of the weirdest golf experiences I've ever had.
The greenskeeper came up to me after and apologized for subjecting me (a paying customer) to smelly transient weirdo freeloader golfers, but I waved him off.
I golfed at Forest Park hundreds of times since and I never saw Stevie again. Since that encounter, I've always thought there was a golf movie in there somewhere, "Stevie wins the US Open" or something like that, but Adam Sandler did Happy Gilmore so maybe it's already been done. Stevie looked like Happy Gilmore's Caddy, but man, he could play.

Fantastic story. I sincerely thank you for sharing it with me. Kudos to you for not being like some of the high and mighty golfers I've encountered. I would've done the same. :)

A few weekends ago my regular playing partner and I were teeing off on 1 and were approached by the club owner and joined by Paco. We're always a bit wary of the horror stories like we're reading here...but he had nice, but very well used clubs and I was confidant it would be a good experience. We get the first hole in and another guy is catching up to us. Paco says "Oh...I know that dude" Jaime...so he joins us. Both decent players..before we'd played a few holes together it seemed like we could have been regular playing partners for years. Before the end of the round we were all needling each other about poor shots..etc. It was a great time. I remember them being especially cruel to each other when one would hit into water the other would yell "Awaa!...." (Agua) now me and my regular partner do that all the time.

LOLZ

I often wonder if he iced it down before drinking it, or just pounded 24 piss hot beers all by himself.

There was no Molson. He wanted to shove you in the trunk. I'm joking. (I'm not really joking).

This morning I set out by myself but I caught up to the pack on the 4th hole when I hit my drive to the feet of the group ahead of me (didn't think it'd go that far) but they were cool about it and offered to let me join them. Both guys were a bit older, probably about 65-70, but were solid golfers. We had a fun round and they were good to talk to.

I've never had a bad experience getting paired up with stragers, but I've only golfed for a year so I'm sure I'll get to see more of what the course has to offer...

I joined up with a couple other singles once due to a group ahead of all of us playing extremely slow but they weren't letting anyone play through. One of the guys looked to be in his 40's but said he had just started golfing this year. We get to the par 3 8th and he hits his ball left of the green behind the greenside bunker. Of course he put his 2nd shot right into the bunker. Finally after about 5 swings and still being stuck in the bunker he asked me for a few tips. I'm a fairly new golfer myself but I told him what I knew. The next shot he hits it perfect and it bounces off the pin in mid air and drops in the hole. Never even touched the green. It was awesome.

I've had great experiences so far joining up with random people on the course.

So I last week I took Tuesday off from work to play a round of golf, It was the only clear good lookin day we had for like a week so I had to hit the links. @ first i thought i was gonna just be playing by myself but @ about hole 7 I caught a foursome. I was by myself so had no problem waiting for them I then decided to play two balls until they offered to let me play thru 2 the turn. Well right in front of them is a Man and his son(about 10 or 11). Well again Im taking my time as to not push them and then the guy decides to wait on the 12th tee box for me to finish the par 3 11th(im playing my best round to date @ this course +11 on front, first time i had ever birdied the 11th). So I join up with this guy and his kid as to not be rude when he offered. Well I think that might have been my dumbest move ever. This guy was the biggest A-hole ever. The whole time hes yelling and swearing @ his son to hurry up. This really shocked me cause the kid was completely unbothered by this and keep just joking around with his dad. I was so thrown off that someone could treat their child like that especially on a golf course and then his son to not even get upset or flustered by this, I mean this guy was full out yellin @ his son for hitting a bad shot. After the round guy gave me his buisness card and told me to call him anytime to play another round. I promply lost that card.

Since most of my golf buddies have been flakey, or on opposite schedules lately, I've been having more and more of these encounters. Keep the stories coming!
