They range from 41 to 49º. What the average is I don't know, but I don't see what it matters either.

Becuase stupid golf companys are making strong lofts up to 1.5 clubs stronger you can get PW lofts at 41* that go 49*

Mine is 49* and I love, it fits distence caps perfectly!

They should be 48, but only clubs designed for low handicaps are 47 or 48, most game improvement sets won't have a PW greater than 45, just so they can say they are the longest irons ever!

If I made a set with a 36 deg PW I could sell them as the longest clubs ever, 20 deg is only a small gap to your SW......

From 1994 until 2008, I played a set of Ping Eye-2 clone irons. 9i was 44*, PW was 50*, SW was 56*.

For my X20s, the 9i is 41*, the PW 45*. I added the CG14 to fill the gap . Also see CrazyXGolfer , above.

Most sites will have the loft in their specs. Mine is 45.

Easy question... are most 48 degrees? Thanks-

As stated by others it depends on the manufacturer...I thought the standard set a while back in blades was 48 but I recently started playing the Cleveland CG1 Tour irons which have blades for the PW-6 iron and the PW is 46 deg...I guess it does not matter as long as you have the correct gap you desire between your clubs and that you know your distances with each club in your bag...just my 2 cents.

Honestly I think 48 is even too strong for my liking. Starting with the 9 iron, my ideal lofts would be 45, 50, 55, 60 or maybe 44, 49, 54, 60. As long as a PW is a comfortable yardage for layups and it's good for both running pitches and some greenside chipping, I don't care what the loft is. I just know for me 50 is more likely to fit that description.

I have only been playing for a little over a year but both sets of clubs I've bought (Adams A3OS and Ping G5's) had a 46* PW.

In my Nike SasQuatch Staff Bag:

Meaning that a 41° PW is really almost an 8I. I can stamp PW on my 5I, but that doesn't give it the functionality of a pitching wedge. Overly strong designations on irons are more for marketing and ego stroking than anything else.

The club's function is based on its design and loft, not by what is stamped on it's sole, so a club that is around 47 to 48 degrees is better suited to be used for pitching the ball than one at 42 or 43 degrees.

Don't get me wrong in that I get your point but to

"each his own" ... I don't mind my pitching wedge being 46 or 45 as I use it only for full shots from the fairway and not for around the green at all...that is just my style in that I do everything around the green with one club...my LW. So back to my earlier post that the loft does not matter as long as the change in loft between clubs meets your needs...and as you said you can call a 41 deg club a PW if you want??? I would also comment that I think the standard is changing as manufacturers are always trying to design the longest clubs by going to stronger lofts...as I said earlier I was surprised to find out that my CG1 Tour irons PW was 46 degree...that is strong for a blade...just my 2 cents.

Thanks. The reason it matters to me is that I lost my W3 (gap wedge), which was 52. My pitching wedge is 48, so having a 52 worked well. I am ready to go out and replace the 52 wedge.

But.... I am also considering replacing my irons later on. If a new set comes with a strong pitching wedge, then its going to throw the gap wedge out of wack.

It's maybe strong compared to an older Cleveland blade (I suspect my TA1 PW is 50 degrees based on the yardage) but not for new blades in general. Does that make sense?

My Titleist wedge was 47* but I weakened it to 48* for two reasons:

1. To fulfill my OCD tendencies to have the same specs that I have been playing for the last 20 years...21-24-28-32-36-40-44-48
2. To even out my gaps for wedges...48-54-60

So yes, a pw is 48*...at least in my bag.

Most will be around 46-47, although I have seen some clever guys selling the PW at 43/44 and offering an additional GW at 48/49 ...... you simply will buy the GW that way

My Titleist wedge was 47* but I weakened it to 48* for two reasons:

After playing my AP-2's for more than a year and a half, I decided to replace my 52° Vokey GW with the 51° AP-2 GW. That seems to keep the spread between the irons fairly similar for full shots, and I like the AP-2 GW a lot better than I did the Vokey for chipping. The only club left in my bag now with the pre 2010 grooves is my SW.
