Worst Putting Day Ever and I snapped my 56* in half.....

Played a round this weekend. 1putted the first hole for par and the last hole for bogey inbetween those holes it was a disaster.

Im talking wayy over 3putting a few holes I just picked up after 5 or 6 putts and moved on I couldnt hole anything. It was particularly embarassing because I was playing wiht one friend and a solo guy who we joined up with due to a HORRIFICALLY slow group in front of us.

I couldnt figure it out wether it was nerves or something I was doing but it was bad I would run a 2ft putt 8feet past the hole infact I ran every put at least 6ft past regardless of wher I hit it from and I started to lose it. I started trying everything to pull it off.

Also I usually putt OK hit the ball well and chip like Shiatttt.. That day I was so frustated that when I flubbed a chip on the 5th hole I arnold schwartzenager'd my Sandwedge over my knee and threw it in the trash.

Anybody ever have a day where every thing was mostly ok except putted like a blind drunk monkey?? How do you recover for the next round or stabilze it during the round to finish ok? I was at a loss and just gave up on putting by the last hole where I walked up didnt even line it up at all and of course sunk a one putt.

Thanks guys.

I played a 9 hole round last November that was a study in contrasts. I hit 9 out of 9 GIR (w/ PING Zing 2s that have since been traded in), and had 23 putts. No 1 putts, and 5 3 putts. I wasn't as mad as I normally would have been because the putting was balanced out by the ballstriking, but I putted so bad it was confusing. I went to the practice green a couple days later, putted better and felt better, played one more round with reasonable putting results, and then the golf season was over (Western NY).

Had a similar round where I just couldn't putt if my life depended on it. MIssed many many easy putts, overread virtually every putt and just couldn't get the speed right.

I've had worst rounds and the way I usually recover is to just put the clubs down for a day or two. Then off to the range and putting green I go. I usually just start off with my usual routine to get my swing back in the groove. I've golfed long enough to know my swing so its just a matter of readjusting whatever went wrong.

As for putting, my problem this past round is that I overthink my putts and in result, get the yips. On the practice green, I look at the putt, read my line, get aligned, then trust my putt. Yesterday however, I would read the line, stand at address then at the last minute, overthink my putt and either push or pull it. Its just a matter of confidently trusting the line that I read and going with it.

I have experienced exactly the same thing many times. The best thing to do is just practice. Go to the practice green with 10 balls or so and practice your distance control. One thing I do to get "the feel" for the distance of the putt is I imagine myself tossing a ball and it gently rolling into the cup.

If your putting does not improve with practice, maybe it's time for a new putter. If that doesn't help, maybe your just flat out doing it wrong...

That's why, if feasable/permitted, I putt out any 2nd putt under 4 feet. Did that about 12 times without missing on Saturday. Had to mark 2 1/2 footer for par on last hole , overanalyzed and missed as a result.

Since you broke a club on purpose I hope you are cursed forever and get worse every time you play... you deserve it.

Why would you wish that on someone?!? LOL. At least he destroyed his OWN property and didn't take it out on the course, cart, etc. Some people have off days and get fired up.

I have broken many of clubs in my day.

Lol you would think that his daughter made the club for me or something lol. It was a garbage sandwedge I grabbed at walmart for $15 3years ago lol and I only started using it when i lost my 60* 3 weeks ago.

I'm sure the day when I break one of my clubs is going to happen soon. I'm still working hard on controlling negative emotions out there on the course.

Broke a few in my day. It took years to get the Hockey mentality out of my golf game.

Wait... what? You can't putt so you broke your wedge? lol.

If your listed handicap is accurate, to quote Peter Jacobsen, you're not good enough to get angry.

Actually it isnt... Im probably more in the mid-teens but I have never really kept one tbh. A few rounds where I kept score this year I shot 44-46-44-50-48 on a Par 36 so im sure that its somewhere in the mid teens range.

I usually play socially or in scrambles. But I was playing matchplay that day against my friend the way we always play. Im actually 3-2 now with him on the year but I couldve won a few holes wiht 2-3 putts that I couldnt make it was really really frustrating. Also not all golfers are below a 1 handicap like yourself but get angry when playing (ie Priest in Caddyshack) its part of the game I thought lol.

About the sandwedge I was going to take it out of my bag perminently after that round and decided Id just vent a little bit on it instead

You HAVE to break one every once in a while, it keeps the others in line... lol

Re: Worst Putting Day Ever and I snapped my 56* in half.....

Sorry to hear about your frustration with your putting. I'm not a great putter by any means but I do have a way to reel things back in when I start having a putting day like you mentioned. Mentally, I focus on trying to cozy the ball up next to the hole to allow for a tap-in. I don't think about holing the ball at all, just think about what it would take (line/speed) to have it come to rest as close to the hole as possible. That usually works instantly and even drops a few putts. Somehow, thinking about THAT seems to get all the components of the putt thought-process working...don't know why. Anyway, works for me.

Re: Worst Putting Day Ever and I snapped my 56* in half.....

I recently had a day like that . . posted a thread here about it. I've been shooting in the high 90's/low 100's and played a course with tough greens . .couldn't make a thng . .4,5 and 6 putted my way to an estimated 130 .. estimated because I got so frustrated I just picked up the ball on a few occasions.

I was able to pretty much laugh it off, though . . no clubs were ever in danger. I've played with people having temper tantrums and I didn't want to do that to my buddy or the 2 strangers we were paired up with . . in my mind and imagination, though, there were some colorful moments.
