The brand or style of irons you play is probably not very important.

A lot of posts ask which is the best set of irons for a ______ handicapper. Which ones have you tried? Which ones did you like and why? What type of swing do you have?

Are some irons better suited to a certain style of play? Of course, but nobody ever seems to provide that information. And what answers do they get? Check the poster's signature line - it's probably whatever they hit. It makes sense that people like what they buy and/or buy what they like, but isn't the fact they're in the bag in the first place your personal seal of approval?

Unless someone is asking about an iron set's quality control or general value (e.g. ruggedness, resale, consistent lies and lofts, adjustability, customer service, projected lifespan, being prone to bag chatter) I don't understand the purely glowing recommendations. There's nothing you'd change? Really? You don't wish your new chrome plated blades didn't blind innocent bystanders on a sunny day? Nobody wishes their satin finish irons would look like that longer than a year - without using iron covers? Nobody wishes their X24 whatchamacallits didn't look like a bag of halloween candy?

And the playability or scoring?

Come on, you could shoot the same score with any similar iron, regardless of brand. I know that you're not me and I'm not you (profoundness) but come on, after a 1/2 hour range session or 9 holes you really should be familiar with your sticks. The worst part of this annoying type of thread? I'm as guilty as anyone. I've made recommendations to people I don't know and if they don't work out for them? Oh well.

What's my point?

Trust me, it's not the arrow. Yeah, I just said that. Buy the sticks already - no the brand doesn't matter. Get some lessons. Just git'er done!!

So, I think what you are saying is that Mizuno makes the best irons on the market? :)

Absolutely right... for the most part people are going to recommend what they have, thats why they use those particular clubs. I really don't have too much of a problem with these threads and sometimes they are put up to give some sort of starting point. A lot of times, even most of the time I might say, these threads are started by high hcp players and/or those new to golf; and they really may not have an idea of where to start. This may give them that.

The other reason I think these threads get started is that the poster is really looking for some sort of justification to buy whatever set of clubs that they want... We all know that what really matters is hitting the clubs for ourselves and seeing what we feel fits our game.

As to your point about scoring the same with similar clubs, I think you have it right again. As much as people say that the Mizunos are like butter or whatever, I don't think that there would be a huge difference between the MP__ and say the Titleist 710. As it's been said so many times, the indian not the arrow.

With regards to making recommendations of clubs to other people, it's really hard, especially when you don't know the person at all. If anything I'll just say what I've used or demoed in the past and how they worked out for me... Why I liked 'em, why I didn't.

So basically, to sum it up... Take recommendations from others with a grain of salt, people will recommend what they use and like and the problem with that, as miller put it so profoundly above, is, "you're not me and I'm not you." If you're looking for a starting point or a few ideas, thats cool by me... If you're trying to justify a new (unnecessary) purchase to yourself (or possibly the wife, etc.), just go get what you want (you were going to anyways).

I'd love to, but they're out of my price range. I also gave up on filling out my partial set of Olin Dutras.

I agree with this thread.

What does matter is club length, lie and shaft. Some clubs will feel better, but I'm sure any good player could play just as well with any club.
Ironically, I bought my clubs from eBay because of the Mizuno hype.

If I could pick two things on my clubs, it would be the shaft and clubhead. Length and lie are not as important factors. The clubhead and shaft, weight and flex, are important. If the club just feels too heavy, I won't like it. I can probably play good golf with it, but not feel as comfortable.

Of all the factors in a round of golf that makes a difference, clubs are not very high compared to the swing.

So you are saying there is a chance that the brand or style is important?

For everyone who's suggested a newb give up whatever shiny forged poser gear he's "gaming" in favour of wide soled SGI fugomatics, this thread is for you.

For everyone who's second guessed an experienced player's decision to not fill their bag with forged players irons (thus missing out on a lifetime of potential long term success and joy right around the corner), this thread is for you.

The brand or style of irons you play is probably not very important, sure I agree with brand, but the style/model and characteristics of the club are a factor, maybe not huge, but still a factor that just can't simply be ignored or written off.

While I generally agree with the statement in the OP, there are a couple brands that offer a specific feature that can assist a golfer with his game and for that individual, that feature could be important to them and usually, only someone who is highly experienced will benefit from that specific feature..... aside from that, there is nothing wrong with wanting to buy nice gear. What is wrong is thinking that nice new gear will shave strokes. For most, getting fit properly to their new irons (no matter what brand you own) is what can help with their game tremendously.

I think style of iron is important. I'm a 19+ HDCP, down a tad from 21+ last year.

I stayed away from the Big Bertha and G10 irons because they popped the ball up in the air too much.

Likewise, I stayed away from the Callaway X-prototypes and Titleist MBs, and the Mizuno MP-68 because I'm not a good enough ball striker - I need more foregiveness than they allow.

The irons which fit me would be the X20s (which I use), possibly X20 Tours if I improved a bit, the AP1s, and the Ping I15s. This assumes that I have the correct shaft on the irons for my swing speed and shot shape. I have test hit all these irons in the last 15 months, and I'm sure any of them would serve me fine once I got them "zeroed in."

I'll agree that brand is not essential, but style or type of iron is.

Yup... find the type/style of iron and the right shaft and you're set... The specific brand and model don't really matter; this is simply where personal preference and looks come in. You may find that you like the looks of one brand over another, but really there isn't a difference (at least not really any significant ones) between one company's iron and another company's in the same category (i.e. blade compared to blade, gi to gi, etc.)

I like big butts and I can not lie. You other brothers can't deny -- that you've always wanted a pitching hybrid.

    • This is the first time I have played in this league but here is an interesting local rule they use. You are allowed to move your ball one score card length in either direction to improve your lie. Scorecard has to be in the folded position though. I love beachside golf. The other rule is you got to walk unless you have a handicap placard.
    • PGAT is all about Scottie right now and rightfully so. The PGAT has it's star right now and some potential good guys hoping Scottie takes some time off.  The LIV guys are of the radar until the PGA. There will be the Rory/ Hovland rumors to keep the fire smoldering until then.  You will probably get your wish as time moves on. What I like most about LIV is they are funded by a regime that has numerous human rights violations and the players don't seem to care. The fans certainly don't seem to mind. I admit, I went to LIV Miami to check it out, it wasn't empty.  I didn't see anyone protesting.
    • After 393 pages of replies can we all agree that Tiger is the GOAT?
    • Hmmm, seems odd. I have ordered several things from them and have never had an issue, so I'm confident it will be resolved. I'm sending the watch back, I don't care for it, Ill just use the H4. There's nothing technically wrong with it, I just don't like it.
    • Actually, I'm in a different league this year. That was at New Albany Golf Links.
