Funny thing happened this morning.
We were playing in our Saturday comp and there was a new guy in the group ahead of me. He was putting in his first card for handicap.
Seemed to have a nice, easy swing.
As I was walking towards the 2nd green, I watched him hit his tee shot on the par three 3rd, (about 140 metres). I saw it bounce about 5 metres from the pin and roll in.
I thought the guys on the tee weren't aware of it because the lip of a greenside bunker obscured their view. There was no reaction at all and they walked off the tee.
I said "That went in, you know", and they said "Yeah, we know".
That was it. Quite funny.

Aces should be celebrated like it's New Year's Eve (day?) at 2400 hours less the kissing. Sounds like that group needed to loosen up a bit.

I would play in a different group for sure. If I scored a hole in one or holed out from 140 meters (even if I wiffed on my first attempt), there better be some high fives.

Wow, how regularly must you hit holes in one to not make a big deal of it? When I get my first it's going to be like I just won the lottery!

I freak out on chip-in birdies.....I cant even imagine what I'm gonna do when I find the cup from the tee.

I give fist-pumps for chip-ins period.

This brings up a good question. You score an ace, but your playing partners don't congratulate you or even seem to notice. Do you still buy them drinks at the end of the round? I say you still have to buy them drinks (one round only).

I say buy one round. When his new friends (story sounded like 1 part newb and 3 parts sour grapes) ask about his hole in one, he can honestly say he bought a round for his playing partners.

Congratulations, my friend. If I were with you, you'd be drinking for free all day.

Awesome. Edit to add, I misread it to think you got the Ace. I've been drinking a little. I'd probably buy you a few anyway. I'm in a charitable mood today.

I almost had one a few weeks ago.. bounced and rolled hit the pin and rolled about a foot away. I celebrated like it went in even though I knew it stayed out. That's crazy talk not celebrating an ace. Even some pros flip out, anyone see Michelle Wie's first pro hole in one?

Just thought I'd share this:

I was at a local course on a long par 5 when I see this guy, about 250 yards out, hole his shot. From what I could see he had no reaction what-so-ever. He just picked up his clubs and started walking towards the hole, then grabbed his ball out of it with a completley straight face. The whole time me and my buddies are standing at the next tee just gazing in amazement. When he walked to the tee I asked him, "was that a double eagle?" he says "no, triple bogey." He joined our group and not one of us said a word for the next 2 holes.

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
