I have done two yoga classes in the last three days. A few weeks back, I played seven hockey games in eight days and buggered my back and hip up. To help recuperate and build strength and flexibility, I tried the yoga out. Going to a hot yoga (Moshka Yoga 104 degrees for 60-90 minute classes) and really enjoyed it, so I signed up for four months, and my goal is to go at least three days per week.
I was wondering if anyone has done yoga over an extended period of time, and what the overall benefits you experienced, but more particularly how it may have helped your golf.

Thanks.

I do at least 2 yoga classes a week, and yes it totally helps keep me loose for golf. I usually play first light on Saturdays and do about 15 min of yoga poses as a warm up. I'm a big beliver in yoga for most anything, and for golf, I highly recommned it.

With that being said, I'm starting P90x today, we'll see how well that helps my game as well...

I hate bikram yoga though... I'm not a fan of that version

Ok....I pop in Jillian Michaels Yoga Meltdown DVD...there its out there

i have been doing it for a month and 2 days a week
i have noticed a pretty big significance in my strength, tone and flexibility since starting it
afterwards i put on a 20 lb backpack and walk in uphill intervals for 25 mins
then have a Military style full body weight training program i do the other 3 days a week
unsure about the game as winter is in effect (sort of....) here so i will have to wait until next season to tell for sure

but i really enjoy doing it and its a ton of fun......

let the flame fest (no pun intended) begin..... (PS im married w 2 kids)

Just because you are married with 2 kids doesn't mean squat! You should just come out of the closet.

Starting up P90X Monday. Going to do the Lean version and cutting out a Cardio and putting X stretch in its place. Hopefully this will help out with my flexibility.

I've done a decent amount of yoga from P90X. It's decently helpful for the most part I think, but I doubt I'll be able to ever quantify how much its helped me, if at all. If nothing else, being able to do crane for 30+ seconds is pretty fun and it looks pretty impressive when I do it.

My dad could really use some yoga though. He can barely make half a shoulder turn. He's over 60 now though, and he just laughs at me when I suggest yoga to him.

Yah, I've heard that it is more like boot camp yoga, very scripted. The Moshka Yoga I do is hot yoga, but there are variations by instructor and ability. I know a few people that went to Bikram and they weren't fans because of the lack of variablity with it.

And if people think it is gay to go to yoga, the class I was in last night had 6 guys and 21 women, and about a third of the women were HOT. Makes the class go nice and smoothly, just makes it hard to concentrate.

Something I need to look in to doing. I have been lifting weights for years, and I am not very flexible. I can bench press close to 300lbs but can only drive the ball 240.

I have a 30 minute golf yoga routine that I do 4-5 days a week. I started it a year and a half ago after jacking up my back and needing to drop a little weight. IMO it has been very helpful for increasing strength and flexibility. I also do some lite lifting and walk during all my rounds plus more on off days. Would recommend yoga to any golfer especially those of us getting north of 40.

Anything you do to improve your flexibility is going to be good for your golf game. Check out the Roger Frederick dvds about golf flexibility. He has worked with Arnold Palmer and many others. Flexibility is key to good golf. Something I am working on myself.

No offense, but you need to look into lag. Chapter 4 of Bobby Clampett's book, "The Impact Zone" is my suggestion. Going through it now. 6'6" 300 lbs myself and have always used brute force to hit a golf ball. No longer. Found out how the little guys with good technique bomb it out there. Lag! Get the book man. $15 on Amazon. Reading it for the 2nd time now myself. Lots of reviews in the reading room sub-forum here on that book. 50+ reviews on Amazon. See for yourself. -Dan

People assuming the full-lotus position while they contemplate their next drive - this is a major contributor to slow play.

Anything you do to improve your flexibility is going to be good for your golf game.

Not only is it going to be good for your game, but it's going to greatly reduce the chance of hurting yourself on the golf course. More flexibility means less wear and tear on your body from golf, which may not seem important for some, but the higher your swing speed is, the greater the chance of either straining something or developing a repetitive stress injury.

I had right shoulder surgery a few years ago, and need surgery on my left one, and again on my right. I just turned 53, and have decided (no choice really) to cut way back on my weight lifting, and go with much more stretching. I've been doing it now for about a month, and I feel great. I do about a half hour in the morning before work, and about 45 minutes each night. I love it!!

my dad started yoga when he was 65 and is super lean and flexible now (he's 68). he goes to a class every day now, and absoluetly loves it. do whatever you can to get your dad on it.

I have a serious back issue that, in some time will require surgery (I'm delaying the inevitable because I'm only 29).

I tried yoga. Dude - I'm an enlightened guy. I'm a writer, an artist and musician who's married to a visual artist. All that stuff. I'm progressive. I'm modern. I'm evolved.

...

Yoga? No. I tried it. I tried it again. I know it works, but I'd rather be in an exercise room somewhere. I didn't like it, and I guess I'm not as modern as I think because the two classes I went to were filled with Wiccans and dudes who were outfitted in Abercrombie exercise outfits; it was not my scene. Give me a weight room and a treadmill and I'll get in great shape.

    • Day 549, May 4, 2024 After lessons and working with Natalie, hit some balls for awhile. Just backswing stuff. Forgot about the slightly shorter stuff, though I'm sure it was as they were only about 75% speed with brief pauses.

    • Best drive I've ever hit: I will not be answering any questions about the rest of the hole. Or the round, for that matter.
    • I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.
    • The last time I played Maxfli balls, Dunlop was still making them. How long ago was that? Mostly, though, I used to play Top Flites (original 336 dimple model) when Spalding was still making them. Now I play the Pro V1x. Last time that I ordered some, Titleist was still making them. Let's see how long that lasts.
