allow me to say, i do have a reason for asking.. Ive never had a serious coach, self taught, have never really watched my swing on video.  As for my question.. when making your backswing, does it feel as though you come most of the way back, then very slightly pause and cock the wrist, or is it one seemless motion?

Reason for asking, is when I feel I have a slight pause when the club is directly behind me and cock the wrist (while completing my turn), i hit the ball with much better contact. Cocking my wrist in the middle of taking the club back (seemlessly, so to speak) result in hitting the ground before the ball - I believe its due to my left wristbreaking down just before impact, versus it staying rock solid when I use the pause method.

Im sure this sounds rediculous, but thanks for any help that can be provided!

i wouldn't go off what other people say, because there bodies are different.. Just my opinion, thats why i don't like Pro's that say, it has to feel like this, because it doesn't...

I let the momentum of the clubhead cock my lead wrist as I am changing directions with my lead shoulder.  Obviously, there must be a very slight pause in changing direction, but I do not pause any more than that.  The timing of this transition is very important.  I feel the momentum of the clubhead pulling against my lead shoulder at the same time that I am starting a smooth acceleration into the downswing with my lead shoulder.

A swing can be easily ruined by getting too quick and not allowing a correct transition at the top.

so you dont conciously include the wrist hinge into your swing? I can completely feel what your saying by taking a few slow swings with a hybrid with the head cover on, but my wrists tends to hinge with a bend instead of my wrist being flat.

and i assume that this is where the real light grip comes into play - to allow your wrist to freely hinge on the half and wedge swings?

You know when you're walking across the parking lot during heavy snowfall, and you slip on some black ice. Your legs go out sideways, and somehow you land, not on your face, but perfectly balanced and still headed in the right direction. Then you just keep on walking like nothing happened because you've got somewhere to be and it's snowing? It feels just like that.

Lead wrist cocks.  Trailing wrist hinges.  However, with a close to neutral grip, the back of the lead wrist can be completely flat at the top, or the inside part of that wrist can be cupped.  It depends on how much you rotate your lead arm, hand, and club in the backswing.  Some players do better just using the natural rotation that occurs.  Others do better using what feels like 90 degrees and results in that cupping of the inside part of the lead wrist.  That may even be natural for you.

You should experiment to see what works best for you to get your clubface back to square at impact.

Some players even restrict the rotation which results in a bowed lead wrist at the top.  I would never recommend that.

most definitely, the flat wrist at the top is most consistent to me. A cupped wrist leads to hooking the ball for me. I'm just trying to get the "correct" way to swing, so I can experiment and see which works best for me. So far, taking the club back in one peice, so that its directly behind me,pausing slightly, and then "flipping"the club up and back with my wrist produces far better impact and consistency than consciously hinging the wrist during the middle of the swing without the pause. The method of taking the club back and turning, and allowing my wrist to hinge from the weight of the club towards the end of the swing feels good, but its something I will have to work on tomorrow morning. I will likely make a video of my swing, but honestly, im a bit nervous that watching it will make me make more changes than I can grasp at one time.

Yes the duration at the top of the swing is make or break. If you get it right there will be no need for any manipulation in the downswing. It seems that you must give up control to get it.

Fred Couples meets Ben Hogan. Buttery smooth and precise. I emulated Fred's swing as a kid, and study Ben Hogan's swing theory. I feel my swing is a mixture of the two. Not quite as silky as Fred's and not quite as tight as Hogan's. Last year I actually had a competitor tell me my swing reminded my of Couples'. That made me feel good.

Mine feels very simple.  I don't consciously create a wrist cock or really do anything with my hands.  The transition isn't a pause, just smooth.  When I'm swinging well, I have a feeling of simplicity.  That is the best way I can describe the feeling I have.

For me, I feel like my armpits are "tight" on the way back with my shoulders turning together with my arms (head centered) and equally as tight on the way down with the sensation of my right foot pushing me forward.  Almost like a pitcher pushing himself forward towards the plate with his right foot pushing on the rubber.  If I do those things correctly, everything else more or less falls into place (especially the pushing off part because it gets me to my left side which, allows me to get my hands into the slot with the shaft falling into the proper plane on the way down).

Slow on the way back with straight left arm.  Accelerate down thru.  Look good on the follow thru.

Its what my dad told me when he started me in golf when I was 5 and it has stuck I don't change a thing.

I am constainly reminded through my lay up shots that if I let go of all tension, give it a waggle and have good tempo, contact and results are far more consistance.  Part of my pre-shot routine is to see the flight of the ball that I want.  I pick a target that is high, a tree, cloud, whatever I can.  If I focus on distance over direction, I get tense and try to step on it and loose tempo.

    • I’m not sure I agree. It’s just what the majority find more entertaining. Most people prefer women’s gymnastics over men in the Olympics. How much hype is there with the men’s compared to the women’s? I bet you can rattle off several big names in women’s gymnastics and only a handful of men. Women’s tennis …same thing. And sure enough, their purses are the same. However, WNBA, awful…LPGA, not near as much interest than PGA. Don’t think it’s really that complicated IMO.

    • If you walk up to a food/drink kiosk at Magic Kingdom and ask the person for a cup of "magic water" they will give you a small cup of Sprite for free. About 3 fingers worth. They don't sell alcohol at MK anymore so I go over to one of the courses while she hangs out there.
    • This isn't some kind of natural fact. It's a lot more complicated than this implies.
