So the commentator (don't know his name) gets the time to criticize Oliver Wilson while he is preparing to wedge his ball up on the green about 4 yards.

He says, "You just have to play this ball on the ground!"  He is appalled that Wilson is going to fly the ball. And says a couple other little comments with that negative overtone.

One second later, the ball lands past the flag, spins back slightly and roles into the cup.

Silence!

On to the next player...

arnold palmer would hit high percentage puts around the green and has been advocating this high percentage method for years and years. a lot of time those announcers are trying to give tips to the average player too. just because the shot worked doesnt mean it was the right play.

i think it was bobby jones? (although im sure if im wrong somebody can help me out here) said that he only hit like 1 perfect shot a round. golf is a game of misses. you have to play the proper percentages. a flop shot was probably not the high percentage play for MOST golfers. without knowing the shortgame ability of that specific player, he was probably just trying to help relate to viewers.

How many times did the golf commentators use the word "little" yesterday.  If it was a normal broadcast it probably was about 1000. So sick of "little" wedge from 145. Why is every golf shot freakin "little?"

Another one is "chase" as in "chase" it on to the green.  Three years ago-- never heard it, now every "little" shot that lands short of the green and rolls on has "chased" on to the green.  I really think the usage is incorrect but I am no english major.  You know, if it is incorrect why doesn't someone tell em -- Gary McCord is the biggest offender.  These guys get paid millions for being on network tv. The least they could do is have a grasp of the english language.

do you have a positive bone in your body? this is now the second forum in 3 days i've seen you have nothing but negative. lighten up dood. i don't understand why people get angered at golf commentating. lets be honest it's not a gripping and overly action packed during the 4 hours it's televised. in a full season of commentating you're GOING to say the same things more than once. besides, i watch it for the golf, not mccord, faldo, faherty, etc...only guy i actually listen to and care about while commentating is jim nantz. besides, i DO have a mute button on my remote...

I'm positive about most things in golf, just don't choose to post about that stuff. I just have trouble wrapping my arms around the "chosen few" like McCord and Koch that continue to say this stuff.   They have the very best job in golf announcing at a top 3 network.  They should be the best in the entire world.  Count the "chases" and "littles" this weekend.

my point was this: take a shot, any shot. now come up with 100 adjectives (if it's possible) to describe that shot. now, imagine seeing what, over 500 shots in a tournament...how many times do you think you'll use the same adjective? yes, they are the best in the golf world for commentating golf...but what do you honestly expect of them?

They certainly don't use many of the adjective available to them, they use the same ones time after time.  Get ready-- here comes something positve, lol -- I do love Ferhery, like Chamblee, Lerhner and Nobilo to name a few.

as an announcer or someone whos' on tv, you get used to certain things/words/comments/phrases that you use as a 'crutch' when you can't think or something quick enough or when you're put on the spot. just sayin from someone from a communications background, might be why i don't care about it so much lol

No. Golf commentators aren't chosen for their grasp of the English language or for their knowledge of adjectives.

Some sports commentators have "catch" or "goto" phrases that they use, so it could be intentional.  Growing up in NY I can't count how  many times I heard Phil Rizzuto say "Holy Cow".   I'm sure your television has a volume control, maybe you should use it so they don't drive you nuts.

I liked when Feherty talked to woods after his 200 yard skyball with the 3 wood and 6 iron from 200 yards to 2 feet.

Tiger joked he wanted a slight uphill lie with a perfect 6 iron...then made fun of O'Hair's 130 yard downhill lie saying he played the hole wrong.

Was good I thought

That was weird, it was either him making that sound or Darren Clarke

Huh???

Chase that little critique from your memory. Whatever works is the right play.

Depends on how you define "works". Before the fact when you're making the decision, "whatever works" is probably defined as "the decision with the best risk/reward trade-off". After the fact, "it worked" doesn't imply that the best risk/reward trade-off was chosen as the course of action, so re-defining "whatever works" to be "whatever got the result" wouldn't make sense. MackJL06 saying just that, just because it got the result doesn't mean it was the best strategy. He was (I believe) playing devil's advocate to the OP and (possibly) defending the commentator's analysis that playing the ball on the ground was the best way to go. [edit] And just for clarity: I don't know how the shot "should" have been played, I didn't see it. Just explaining the comment.

"Golf is an entire game built around making something that is naturally easy - putting a ball into a hole - as difficult as possible." - Scott Adams

Was the commentator really painting a PGA Tour professional's upcoming shot in a nothing event with the "amateurs should not try this shot at home" brush of boringness?

    • Day 5- Slow,  short swings with short practice club.
    • Lemme guess….’ We don’t want any confrontation so nobody says anything.’ Sheesh…..Call him out and fix the problem.
    • Went to a PING fitting day today. Going to be ordering a G430 Max 3w with a 75g x-stiff shaft at 5w length and a 3h. I forget what my fitter did with the shaft on that but she told me she’s going to email the club the specs of everything. The 3w combination we found pretty quickly. As for the hybrid, we tried a bunch of different head and shaft combinations for that distance with mixed results. Then she handed me the 3h and I took three swings with it and knew it was the one.
    • Yeah, this isn't sandbagging. It's outright cheating. He should be banned.
    • That’s quite a generalization. It’s clear that you don’t like water but there are plenty of us that drink it just fine. My daily intake is usually about 20oz of black coffee, 16oz of soda, 8oz of milk mixed into a protein shake, and anywhere between 30-60oz of water. It doesn’t even need to be cold and I kind of prefer it closer to room temperature than cold. I quite like the taste of tap water, with sole exception being the tap water at Magic Kingdom (it’s terrible). I can’t stand when people bring me tap water with a lemon wedge in it. I didn’t ask for lemon in my water.
