Hello all sandtrappers ,

I would just like to know what you all think of men playing hybrids . When you see a hybrid in a man's bag do you think he is a bit of a 'lesser' man? A bit of a whimp, if I may say so .

Also what about furry animal headcovers ?  Would you think lesser of someone when he has those.

What if he has the hybrids and the headcovers?

I welcome all opinions, and may I also use this opportunity to wish you all a very merry xmas and a fabulous new year with many birdies , and may it be another year where we will be so fortunate to be able to play this great game

Almost every MAN with whom I play -- has a couple of hybrids -- and they are men. A man who knows his limitations and is humble enough to recognize them is an authentic man.

The others ... not so much.

Headcovers -Pros use them and I'd guess You would consider them real men.

It's just personal choice. For me I hit my 4i better than I hit my 3h but I have the hybrid as a mid-distance club between 4i and 3w but also to help get out of trouble if needed. It has no bearing whatsoever on how 'manly' I am.

Furry head covers I'd use if they looked better than my existing JPX 800 covers.

I can't think of one guy I know who doesn't play at least one hybrid. Nothing wimpy about them at all - not surenwhere you're coming from on that one. Furry animal head covers are ok as far as I'm concerned. They seem a bit bulky, but nothing "unmanly" there either.

I'd say more men play hybrids than don't.  There is nothing unmanly about playing hybrids.  Or animal head covers.  If you wanna put that big ass dog on your driver, go for it.  For me, I have two hybrids in my bag but no animal head covers.

Sounds to me that the OP is a bit unsure of his own manliness.

I don't use hybrids or have furry headcovers. That being said, if there was a furry head cover I liked I would buy it and if I hit a hybrid better than an iron it would be in my bag. --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=35.262617,-119.575163

My only problem with golf is that I am usually standing too close to the ball............ after I hit it.

I might judge someone for using too many smileys while wishing me a "fabulous new year", but I honestly try not to look at other people's equipment in case I might prejudge their skill level. Personally I'd never put an animal headcover on a hybrid because they sit too low in the bag. They need more of a traditional knit sock or something so they'll sit properly at the bottom of the bag.

Not sure why choosing the best equipment for your game would be considered unmanly. If anyone thinks that playing a hybrid because it's easier to hit is unmanly because of it, they had better be playing muscle-back irons themselves. Not a fan of animal headcovers on my own clubs, but I don't care what someone else puts on theirs. Woods did it, albeit a tiger. Other pros do it. I wouldn't tell them their not manly enough.

To be honest, I'm a bit jaded over the whole fluffy animal headcover thing.

I had a Hippo driver, but could never find a hippopotamus headcover ... haven't really recovered from that.

Wow....that's a lot of smileys!!  As everyone else has stated, hybrids are the new in-thing!!  Even the pro's use them....

As for headcovers:

I haven't used a 'stock' headcover on my driver or 3wood for many years........  The first thing I do when I buy a new driver or 3wood is to replace the cover with my own.  I have a team mascot on my driver, and a team logo cover on my 3wood.  I leave the stock cover on the hybrid and putter......

I couldnt care less how many hybrids someone has in their bag or how many furry animal headcovers they have.  Considering how pretty much all tour pros nowdays use hybrids, I wouldnt say thats wimpy at all.

I personally don't play hybrids because I just don't like them, but I don't look down at anyone who has them in the bag. For a lot of people, including tour players, it's a lot easier to get the ball in the air with a hybrid.

What I do consider wimpy is a man playing graphite shafts in their irons and they're in their sub-40's. I believe anyone under 40 is strong enough to play steel shafts. JMHO...

If it's un-manly to use a hybrid - then it's un-manly to use a 460cc driver and any irons that aren't musclebacks from the 70's

My adjustable (weights - MP600) driver is 460cc. My musclebacks are much newer than 1970s (MP-11 including the 2-iron ca. 1992) and after I move my Launcher 3w over to my Cleveland fanboy setup, I'll be using a 17 degree Hybrid between my driver and 2-iron. Should I be ditch the Sun Mountain and get a Wilson Hope bag?

    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
    • Oh yea, now I remember reading about you on TMZ!
    • Of course there's not a simple or knowable answer here. But the whole Caitlin Clark phenomenon is a nice example IMO. Suddenly there was wall to wall media coverage and national attention and... the women's tournament got similar ratings to the men's and much higher ratings than the men in the final four. With every indication that there will be some portion of the uptick that remains going forward. And there's the whole element that Sue Bird brought up. That basketball needed a pretty enough white superstar guard. One who looks like the "cute little white girls" that describes most of the soccer USWNT that's been able to achieve much higher popularity than any version of women's basketball, which is dominated by black players and none of any race who could be described as little... I do think women's sports are in a good place to start taking off more though. It's really only in the coming 5-10 years that the majority of girls will start to come of age with post Title IX grandmothers (as in their grandmothers were allowed to be serious athletes). I don't follow men's or women's basketball much, but in golf for sure the women's tour has gotten much deeper over the past 20 years and only looks to keep going in that direction. I've heard the same about women's basketball. And the patriarchal attitudes that socialized girls out of sports and everyone out of women's sports fandom aren't gone but have def diminished.
