My last two attempts at golf were aborted:  a Friday afternoon round in Houston two weeks ago thwarted by thunderstorms after 6 holes, and a failed attempt at a Saturday morning walk-on at my local track last weekend (only managed 9 frustrating holes).

I'm heading to Maui this morning, and I'll be staying halfway between Kaanapali and Kapalua.  Unfortunately, due to family priorities, the clubs will be staying here on Oahu.

I'll probably manage one round next weekend--but that will be only one complete round of golf in the month of February.  What makes it worse is that my last 4 complete rounds were all poor starts (+3 or worse in the first four holes), but each time I played the last 14 holes under par.  I've been so close to stringing together a few under par rounds (I've never shot consecutive rounds under par), but I can feel that momentum slipping away.

Try living somewhere that only has "seasonal" golf......Wanna talk about withdrawal.  I am insulating my garage this spring and hanging a net, just so I can go out there over the winter to try an keep my swing in check.  Incidentally, Hawaii is at the top of my list for a warm spot vacation, probably has to do with growing up while Magnum PI was on the television.

Yeah, I know--not much sympathy from the crowd when most of the US is still under snow.  I've lived in my share of "seasonal" golf locales:  Colorado, Virginia, and New York.  When I was a freshman in college in NY, our first local team round of the season was in late March, and it started snowing when we were on the third tee.

In his defense, sometimes it's worse when you have the clubs ready to play & can't ... than when you expect to be under snow for 4 or 5 months & know you can't play.    This has been a great winter here in the N/E - played close to a half dozen times when I should be skiing.    Awesome...

Yeah winter up here in Canada has been exceptional, if the weather holds I think the courses may be open by early April which is unheard of up here.

The worst part for me...I can't play until July no thanks to recovering from ACL reconstruction and the doc telling me I can't make a swing until at least the 6 month mark. It's torture because all I can think about is golf. I guess I will be spending May and June on the putting green.

There is no defence!

He misses out on golf for a few weeks - I miss out on golf for 6 MONTHS

And, yes, winter has been great in Calgary too. We've only had one week where it got down to minus 30 ( degrees celsius ) other than that, plus temps or around 0...but it still aint golfing weather.

Third day here in Maui. The wind has been blowing 25-40 mph pretty much continuously, so I'm thinking the Plantation Course might not have been so much fun this trip anyway. I'm really sorry for y'all who live in Canada, but I've seen two Canadians here so far, one from Calgary even. They said they got here on a "plane" or something. :-D

We're heading to Maui in October and are slated to play Royal Ka'anapali and Kapalua Plantation. Crossing my fingers for nothing more than light winds! Even if its gale-force I'll be out there; very much looking forward to both courses.

Don't know of you've been out here before, or what kind of courses you like. However, my opinion Kaanapali isn't the best venue to showcase Maui golf. If you get a chance go over to Wailea, about an hour from kapalua (Kapalua and Wailea are the two extreme ends of the island). Courses there are beautiful and well laid out. You can play two and make a day of it.

I'd agree - Kaanapali is about my least favorite course in all the islands.   It seems pretty plain and just doesn't feel very special, but for some reason they still command a premium price, maybe because of the Champions Tour event.    The Wailea courses are much nicer, or if you want to stay on the west side you might consider the Kapalua Bay Course - it's not as interesting as Plantation but it is waaaaay more interesting than Kaanapali.

As with others who are under snow, I have no sympathy for the OP.

I haven't played golf in over a month.  Usually, we can get out once in a while during winter in Denver area, but (except for last year) last five years, it seems just when enough snow melts for courses to open, BAM! another snow storm.  There have been at least three occasions this year when the course opens up during a weekday, and it snows the very next day to have it closed up again. Ugh!

You know, to those of you who are whining about no golf for 6 months, you do choose to live in a place with seasonal golf.

They also probably choose to have a house, family or job unfortunately most people can't just pick up and move to warmer climates. It's been a very mild winter in MD so I've been able to play most weekends.

Where do you live on Oahu? I use to live off piikoi. I left Oahu a little over a year ago.(One of my biggest mistakes, but then again I would have never fallen in love with golf if i stayed) I didn't play golf when i lived there, but my buddy use to play a lot at a small course up near schofield.

We all choose to live somewhere.  Or, in some cases, we choose to have a job that requires us to live in one location, or in many locations.  My job has taken me many places, sometimes for a year or longer, where golf clubs were definitely not on the packing list.

For now, I'll enjoy where I am, and play golf as much as I can!

I live in Kailua, but work near SB--and I've played Leilehua many times.  I'll be playing there on Saturday morning, actually.
