Garcia, who made the cut on the number at 5-over par, signed for a 4 on the par-4 17th hole, when he in fact recorded a 5. He shot a 4-over 74, though that score was not official because of the disqualification.

In tournament golf, players exchange scorecards and keep each other's score. Garcia was playing alongside Boo Weekley, who wrote down
the score incorrectly. At the end of the round, it is the player's responsibility to check the card for accuracy and Garcia didn't do that.

i think it's a little stupid that they can't have just let something like that slide because of their scoring/rules tradition

it's not like he was trying to cheat, he was just careless.. as was boo. i'm sure if everyone's cards had at least one mistake like sergio's, a large number of players would've been dq-ed as well

You know, Boo Weekly was keeping his score card. Now Boo seems like a heck of a guy, and I would love to play golf with him. But he does not strike me as the brightest colored crayon in the box. I think if Boo's mathematical prowess was all that stood between me finishing a major tournament or not, I would give his addition skills a little once over. Well live and learn.

Bah it happens. Its not like Sergio was anywhere close to contending. I dont even think he cared too much afterwards. So I wont either.

I'm sure he cares about it, if he would have made
a top 20 finish that would have been about 76,000.00

How do the tournament officials know that Sergio Garcia turned in the wrong score? Because the whole freakin' world knows what his real score was because this is a televised professional event . It was obviously a mistake. Nobody in the history or future of televised golf has ever or will ever finish the 4th round with a different score from what he actually shot because it is impossible to successfully post the wrong score. Do away with this nonsense already.

That being said, remember to compare notes next time, Sergio. Jeez... it's common sense.

If I remember correctly from the espn article on it, Boo said to Sergio that his card was wrong but Sergio stormed out and left.

Remember, too, a player isn't responsible for adding up his scorecard. He's only responsible for getting his hole-by-hole scores correct. You can write down 114 in the "total" box - it doesn't count for squat. The committee is responsible for doing the addition.

I disagree. We've had this discussion before. Golf is one of the few sports left where you're personally accountable. The act of signing your name and saying "this is what I shot" is part of that.

Boo doesn't come across as a Harvard professor but I doubt if he'd have any problem adding a score card. He may be a down to earth kind of guy, but he's no idiot. A simple mistake; it happens.

Anyway... this rule does not apply to me because I don't compete professionally; therefore, I will continue disliking the rule and playing the game. So there.

No... all of my friends stopped playing because they didn't like the scorecard rule. I'm a rebel though.

Does a player also have access to the data recorded by the group's official scorer? If not, I would submit that they should be able to review, side by side the manual recordings of the playing partner and the electronic record by the official scorer.

That said, it is pretty hard to imagine that a professional doesn't remember what he scored on a hole played no longer than about 5 hours ago in a professional event.
