Hello new friends!

I'm quite new to golf.  Started last year, only had time for a few games and a few tries at the driving range, and winter hit and work got busy.  My bosses husband and my boyfriend are avid golfers, and I've always admired the game, so I'm trying.  I would like to focus on paying more technically correct and hopefully my scores will eventually catch up.

I'm a horrid golfer, but I still have an awesome time, regardless.

I bought an old and nasty set of women's clubs from a co-worker's mother (who was a former semi-pro so they were decent clubs at some point in time), and I just do my best and listen to everyone's instruction.

Newbie question...

Golf shoes.  Why?

I currently golf in comfortable, practical athletic shoes.  I'm curious as to difference/advantage, etc.

My goal is to learn all the intricacies and nuances of the game, so I'm happy to hear everything everyone has to share.

Since you're new to the game I don't think it's all that important to have golf shoes unless you feel weird wearing athletic shoes and want to look more like a "serious" golfer.

When you do decide to get some golf shoes, these are pretty good

Thanks so much for the warm welcomes and replies!  I'm enjoying this site.

Just got back from the driving range. I'm getting pretty consistent with hitting 100 yards, and less slicing to the left.  I find that if I set up my swing, double check my grip (more finger, less "hand"), relax, backswing, relax AGAIN...I NAIL it right down the center.  So nice to FINALLY be consistent.  Now if I could just afford better clubs (I have an OLD set...hand-me-down).  My boss's husband is a local "pro" (so to speak) and consistently wins all the local tournaments...says "your grips suck".  Haha...how about a raise and I will buy new clubs!

So, I did find a women's TaylorMade driver on eBay for $5.  So I start there and see what works and what doesn't.

Anyone have a cheap (but nice) set of women's clubs they want to sell me??? :-)

I did splurge and by myself an inexpensive should bag....LOVE it.  Exactly what I needed to make the decent "hike" to my local driving range.

Golf can certainly get somewhat expensive. You can actually have your grips changed and it's relatively inexpensive. Perhaps you could post a pic of your clubs and the peeps here can steer you in the right direction to see if it would be worth it. my thought would be to get your swing working good and then upgrade your clubs.

Sorry. No women's clubs here. I would like to find some for my wife, but she's not really interested. :-)

    • Oh yea, now I remember reading about you on TMZ!
    • Of course there's not a simple or knowable answer here. But the whole Caitlin Clark phenomenon is a nice example IMO. Suddenly there was wall to wall media coverage and national attention and... the women's tournament got similar ratings to the men's and much higher ratings than the men in the final four. With every indication that there will be some portion of the uptick that remains going forward. And there's the whole element that Sue Bird brought up. That basketball needed a pretty enough white superstar guard. One who looks like the "cute little white girls" that describes most of the soccer USWNT that's been able to achieve much higher popularity than any version of women's basketball, which is dominated by black players and none of any race who could be described as little... I do think women's sports are in a good place to start taking off more though. It's really only in the coming 5-10 years that the majority of girls will start to come of age with post Title IX grandmothers (as in their grandmothers were allowed to be serious athletes). I don't follow men's or women's basketball much, but in golf for sure the women's tour has gotten much deeper over the past 20 years and only looks to keep going in that direction. I've heard the same about women's basketball. And the patriarchal attitudes that socialized girls out of sports and everyone out of women's sports fandom aren't gone but have def diminished.

    • I have nothing to add other than I freaking love her swing and I think she's hot as hell and some of my golfing buddies disagree so I fought them
    • I’m not sure I agree. It’s just what the majority find more entertaining. Most people prefer women’s gymnastics over men in the Olympics. How much hype is there with the men’s compared to the women’s? I bet you can rattle off several big names in women’s gymnastics and only a handful of men. Women’s tennis …same thing. And sure enough, their purses are the same. However, WNBA, awful…LPGA, not near as much interest than PGA. Don’t think it’s really that complicated IMO.
