7I, 137 yds sweet spot. How many yards if contact is red dot (extreme toe end), same swing?

My guess, and it's only a guess, is about a club difference. For a relatively slow swing speed (137 yard 7-iron) I'll call that 10 yards difference = 127 yards. GI irons are pretty damn forgiving these days.

I'll post Crossfield's result at the end of the day. My guess was totally off. I'm not too knowledgable w/regards to clubs though.

I've had that exact same strike before. I was hitting Mizuno MP-59's and the distance drop wasn't as huge as you'd think.

I would say being a 7-iron from 137 that the drop off would be to about 125 yards.

The recent Taylor Made ad showed that their new clubs, when hit in these spots (heel and toe) lose little little distance (2-3 yds?) but accuracy is off by 5-8 yds. Using their version of Iron Byron at the 17th at Pebble.

But the toe hit in the commercial is almost one ball further towards sweet spot than this shot.

I went through a phase of toe misses and its amazing how short it goes when it doesn't feel THAT bad but you miss the grooves (I keep my clubs really clean so I can see the strike points).

I'd say the big issue is that you are hitting it where there are no grooves, ball goes nowhere and knuckles.

My guess is at 110 yds or so. I have a lot of experience hitting crappy shots. Really curious to see how Crossfield sees it.

That toe hit on the left, I'd be confident the drop off was very minimal. (Probably just a couple of yards) I'll hit really nice shots with my i20 short irons (heavy tungsten weight out on the toe - very forgiving) that pretty much go where I want them to and then see the mark out on the toe - like the pic on the left.

The pic on the right, however, the ball is entirely beyond the grooves.  There has to be some drop off, I would think.  I'll guess 120 yards.

This past summer, I got to test the SLDR irons for TST. I noticed that toe or heel hits*:

  • Lost maybe 3-5 yards carry; and
  • Ended up 8-10 yards offline.

* (This assumes a smooth swing that caught on the toe or heel, not a really bad swing. Perimeter weighting and face slots won't save you if you make a terrible swing.)

I pick up the YouTube clips by Mark Crossfield or Rick Shiels. Their tests on new 2015 iron models pretty much confirm what I noticed from my SLDR play.

      after some years experimenting around, I've settled on a mixed bag of mostly Pat Simmons vintage Tiger Sharks (the ones with the blue enamal on back of the clubheads): 3 thru 9 iron, + 3 wedges (PW, sand, chipper). Those super heavy clubheads really help me get my swing down and thru the ball. Also I carry an old Taylor 18-degree rescue club, 17-degree and 14 degree ImagineGolf metalwoods, and the famous Pat Simmons "alien" 1-iron. Finally a real brick-on-a-stick, the big-headed Bettinardi Ben Hogan model putter which is excellent for taking the break out of short putts and getting the ball hole high on long ones. Wait....is that 15 clubs? Oh well....

      this topic brought to mind one my favorite golf-spectator memories. Back when, living in Santa Barbara CA, parked in my yellow cab just behind the 10th tee  (c. 380 yard par 4) at SB Muni golf course while eating lunch. A twosome comes by, and first up is this fat little mexican guy who takes a kinda squirelly practice swing, then addresses the ball and bashes a long, high, perfectly straight drive up to w/in about 5 yards of the green. Other guy is dressed to the 9's, pulls out what looks like a $300 driver....and hits a maybe 150-yard pop fly. Slams clubhead to the ground and yells, "it's fat! It's fat! Everything is fat today!!"  And that's how I learned what a "fat" shot is.

Unless you know something that I don't, neither of us are in any position to judge whether Woods or Nicklaus lived their overall life better, not that such a thing is even objectively measurable, nor is it relevant to the discussion.
