Hello everyone, It's been an extremely cold and snowy winter for us in Maine, many of us here are ready for spring to begin and the snow to melt so that we may enjoy the good weather once again, especially for those of us who golf, my local course has about 3 feet of snow on the fairways and the green so it will be interesting to see how the course plays this year!

I am very glad to have found this forum after searching off and on the past month, I hope to have many good conversations, and help other members on this forum, all the while possibly finding other golfers from my state on here!

I play at Hidden Meadows Golf Course in Old Town it's about a 20-25 minute drive from Bangor it's only 9 Holes but it is not overly busy and it's off from the road, it also is quiet and the course is usually in excellent condition, it also has a driving range. It's well worth going to if your just starting out and want to play at your own pace it's $14 for 9 holes, $20 for 18, or $30 for the whole day.

If your looking for something more "local" the only one I can really recommend is Hermon Meadows Golf Club, it's an 18 hole course in Hermon though it gets fairly busy but it offers more of a challenge, the green fees there are a bit higher: $15 for 9, $27 for 18, after 2PM it's $12 and $17.

Welcome, I am a few hours north of you in Mars Hill. A few of the kids from the golf team and I try to go down to Penobscot Valley every April break if it is open. Definitely looking forward to getting back out!

Welcome...what do you recommend for a decent beginners course in the Bangor area?

Rocky Knoll in Orrington  is an OK course fairly wide open, Pine Hill is a wide open 9 in Brewer (this is where I played High School golf and learned how to play), Bangor Municipal (was a member here for years as a junior and regular member) is a good track and not overly tough.   I used to be a Member at both Penobscot Valley and Hermon Meadows as well.  Hermon is OK, has some quirky holes (this is the course where I shot my highest score ever, some very tight holes and lots of OB) but was a fun place to play.

There are also plenty of 9 hole courses around, almost too many.

Penoby is a great donald Ross course, but is semi-private and the greens are tough.

Mars Hill, nice course except for that one Par 4 that you need to be a mountain goat to play (as it feels like your leaning sideways) and every ball pretty much runs off the fairway down the hill into the rough.

I completely forgot about this post and just catching up now. The courses suggested earlier are great and as mentioned quite a few choices. I haven't played much in Bangor, mainly early in the season at Penobscot Valley which was a lot of fun but so early in the season. I have played the Bar Harbor Course in Trenton and another small course in Winter harbor called Grindstone Neck which is a fun little coastal course. Good ole' #16, I am good friends with the course owner and his grandfather designed the course who just passed away about a year ago. That was the one hole they never liked and now the grandson is in control of the course I wouldn't be suprised to see something change in that area in the next couple of years. Number 4 which is an extremely short par 5 is going to be extended a bit this year if plans stay. Love playing the course and even better is that I live about a minute from the course.

I've played the trenton course many times.  Have played Grindstone Neck in High School, NE Harbor is also a very nice course.Used to be on 15 holes, they built three holes on someone else's property and it took them a while before they were able to buy the land.  Was very funny, seeing three of the best holes that you couldn't play.

      I get kidney stones. So 100 oz of water every day. Some nights I drink 32oz between midnight and 6 Am. Which means I dont sleep much.

      I don’t measure my intake either. I generally have a black coffee, a bottle of soda, some sweet tea at home, and anything in between is water. An ice cold bottle of water is one of my favorite things. It feels like an immediate refresher for my body. I’ll admit that I need to drink a little more though.

      For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.
