After 2 years of struggle. Refusing to take lessons because I feel as though I'm athletically inclined enough to figure the golf swing out. Going through literally dozens of swing changes. Reading hundreds of swing theories. I finally did it.

I broke 100 with a very solid 92 at The Frog. A Tom Fazio designed course. I took no mulligans. Played from the whites because that's where hackers should play from until they can consistently break 100 I believe. Now playing from the whites the course is under 6000 yards.

I 3 putted 7 holes. 6 of which I missed my second putt from within 6 feet so it could have been a Legit 86. I bombed the ball off of the tee on all but 3 of the driving holes leaving myself short wedge shots onto the green.

Obviously I had a little luck also several shots rolling right up to the bunker but not going in etc...

But now the real test is will I be able to replicate on my next round.

Congrats, I recently broke a 100 with a 94. Finished the 18th hole by missing a 2 footer. It was a relief after a first year of disappointments. I followed it up with a 93 on a par 67 (back tees).

How long have you been playing?

congrats man.. i am like you.. i just started 3 months ago and i am also pretty athletic so i am motivated to learn on my own.. (may be a mistake).. but i'm definitely enjoying the process..

I'm taking this weekend off, bad weather and busy schedule. But, I'm almost nervous to go back b/c I don't want to disappoint myself with a poor showing. hahaha

one thing that helped me get out of my own head was not totalling my score on the front 9. I knew I had a decent round going but didn't know how good until the end. It helped me tremendously.

Great progress guys! Keep it up!

Although, I would definitely recommend getting some lessons or other professional advice.
IMO, the idea of "Refusing to take lessons because I feel as though I'm athletically inclined enough to figure the golf swing out." should be revisited. All the best golfers in the world have swing coaches and are constantly getting "lessons".

One thing I have learned about learning golf is that it is similar to learning math (or any number of other subjects). By this I mean that sure, if you were smart enough, you could learn how to do calculus by reading a math book. But it is significantly easier (and quicker!) to learn from a competent teacher.

I agree.

When I first broke 100, i shot an 8 over on the front nine. I couldn't believe I was on pace to break 90! On the 10th hole, I just wanted the round to be over so that I could break 100. I was counting down each stroke. That ultimately led to me playing nervously and not breaking 90.

Congrats. I remember breaking 100 with a 95, then backing it up with a 92 the next day. I haven't posted anything below a 95 since then, though. I agree with you 100% on the tees.

Congrats guys!

It's funny, you have a hard time breaking 100 and then you do it on a regular basis. Then 90 becomes tough to crack, but once you do........

I remember breaking 90 and then shooting in the high 80s consistently. My best is 86, and I'm looking forward to having that first score in the 70s.

Oh, and one tip to help out. Worry about your score over each three holes and not the overall score. If you concentrate on getting pars and bogies over three holes, it helps keep your mind off of the overall score. When I shot 86 I had a 6 ft. putt for par on the last hole to shoot that score. I sank the putt, and then added up the scores. That's when I found out I had shot my best score. If I had known I was putting for the best round ever at 6 feet, I would have been a bag of nerves!

Congrats man, don't try and compare your next round to the your first one as your going along b/c you will get down on yourself if you don't do the same or better...Good Luck and congrats again though...
