And Then It Happened

A few weeks ago, right before the really nice weekend we had, it happened. I was looking forward to getting in one last round without dressing up like an Eskimo. Sometimes at the height of our reveries, when our joy is at its zenith... when all is most right with the world... the most unthinkable disasters descend upon us. While climbing down from a lift at work, my right foot missed the last step and went to the floor bending my left in an awkward position. I spend the weekend resting it, but it has been giving out on me. I finally caved and went to the doctor who ordered up an MRI which I had done this morning. At any rate, it looks like my year is definitely done. On the bright side, it didn't happen in the spring when the season is just getting started.

That stinks. If it was the rear ankle you might have a chance. The lead side is generally the more important side for that type of thing.

It’s actually my knee. Reading back, the word knee did not come out of my keyboard. Either way, it could be a long winter of recovery. They gave me the CD, but I have no idea what I’m looking at.

Thanks everyone. I’ll use this post to keep everyone updated. My biggest concern right now is if elective surgeries will be shut down again.

Your loss is our gain.  Now you have more time to Blog since you can't play.  Follow your Doctor's orders, have a speedy recovery and come back as a newer and better version: CarlSpackler2.0!

It is as I feared unfortunately. The MRI shows a torn cartilage. I assume is the meniscus which is consistent with an injury where your knee twists while bearing weight. I am being referred to an Orthopedist. I'm still hoping that it isn't so bad that it needs surgery, but I will have to wait another week to see what he says.

Are you allowed to eat unlimited ice cream with an injury like this? I swear I read that somewhere...

The other downside is that I will need to cancel all of my drumming gigs that are coming up. 😡

I’m thinking this gets you out of shoveling this winter! Doctors orders you know.😀

My son still lives at home, and that is his job anyway. He is also in charge of putting lights on the house this year too.

Be careful what you wish for. It's scary what can come out of this brain. 🤪

I am glad that you aren't my doctor. 😳

🤣

For the right price, he could be.

I finally got to see the Orthopedic doc. My meniscus is fine, so she doesn't think I will need surgery. She is filing for approval to get cortisone shots and physical therapy. If that doesn't work...

Well that’s good news. I’ve had meniscus surgery twice. It’s not fun.

I was very happy that it was intact. If they do have to operate, it will be to remove some pieces floating around, but that doesn't seem likely. I also have a built in excuse for bad swings now. It must be the cartilage bits in my left knee. 😁

Quick update...

I had a cortisone shot in my knee three weeks ago. Hurt like hell for a while, but definitely helped once it soaked in. I started PT last week and it seems be helping. I have not tried swinging a club yet, but then again, I don't need to for quite some time. Stupid winter. 😒

Good luck and be diligent with the PT. And ice is your friend. Even if you do stuff around the house, a little ice time will speed recovery.

My father in law gave me his machine that pumps cold water around his knee from a previous knee replacement. That does the trick quite nicely.

Good luck with the therapy.  I had a knee replacement 15 days ago and have done everything the Dr. said.  Ice, constant elevation and exercise three times per day and I feel great so far.  They told me I could probably chip and putt in a couple months and hit balls by May or so.  I've had scopes done on each knee previously and if you follow the program you should be OK.  Plenty of time to watch the Golf Channel!

Well....

two weeks ago, he threw some new exercises at me. The next day, my glutes were sore, but it also felt like someone kicked me in the beanbag. I’m still sore, so I had the nurse practitioner (young girl about the age of my daughter) check me for a hernia. She couldn’t feel one, so she sent me for an ultrasound. After 20 minutes or so of another young lady fondling my 🥜 the results show a hydrocele. Look it up.

PT is on hold while the pulled groin and related hydrocele heal. My knee is more stable, but it still hurts when sitting down on a barstool or similar. I see the ortho Monday. She says that the next step would be to inject some of my platelets into my knee.

The original reason I went to the doc was because I have shingles. This is the second time for me, and I’m not even 50 yet. 🤦‍♂️

Could it get worse? Well yesterday it became apparent, sparing y’all the details, that I am passing a kidney stone.

Someone please shoot me.
