For me it depends. By and large I will use a 60 degree lob wedge for most of my shots around the green (80% or more) since I grew up just delofting the club to get lower chips with more roll.

I do this, too, for the most part. I do vary my club selection based on the situation but most situations I encounter won't require anything other than my LW.

There is a lot of great advice in all the comments!

My best advice when it comes to chipping...  Is practice with a variety of clubs off the fringe, in the rough,  in heavy rough,  in a divot, off the mulch, and find which works best for you.

My 8 iron works best for me because I can bump and run it or even hit a small flop shot with it.

But I also use my 9 or 52 degree wedge too.    I use my 56 out of the sand.      I have a bunch of videos on it... I even did a hands on review of the square strike wedge.   Don't fall for the Commercial on TV.  You already have the club in your bag.  Just have to test them all out

Just an fyi. This morning while playing, I had a rather long shot from under a tree, and a less than good lie. In essence it was a long chip shot, maybe even more of a bump and run.

Having to keep the ball low, I used my 7W with a chipping stroke to with in 3' feet of the pin. A 1 putt par was a good thing.

I remember when the pga pros were using 3Ws from just off the green, when in a precarious lie situation.

What ever club that works.

I let the length of the shot, the terrain and the amount of green I have to work with define the club I pick.   I prefer minimum loft to get the ball rolling as I feel that over time that gets me closer to the hole in average.

I don’t feel I can lob it high, and hence less roll, from longer distances as that leads to being shorter than I like for my putt.  I also try and use the same swing effort (length taken back and firmness) where possible so the main work in deciding is how far effectively does this ball need to roll.  That includes distance, slope and grain.

I do prefer a wedge, 50 and higher, from green side rough.

When I have down time at school, I've been re-reading Tiger's book "How I play golf".   There is a section in the book about him using a 3W from just off of the green.   You don't see too many pros use that option but it is a very viable one.

I use a very similar approach with the goal of getting the ball rolling like a putt as soon as possible for most shots in the near-green-in-regulation range.  Focusing on the same swing-effort helps me with more consistent "sweet spot" impact, and regular practice lets me know how far each club flies-&-rolls.  I struggle with soft, high, finesse shots, and try to avoid those situations at all costs (i.e. leaving myself behind a bunker).

This may have already been posted. My apology if it has.

With a chip, as with all approach shots, the golfer should read the green when ever possible. Knowing how that green will cause the ball to roll helps in determining where to land the ball on that green in the first.

Just like reading a putt.

Because my chipping is so bad...Today I went to the practice green and worked with my hybrid, 7 iron, PW, AW, SW and GW.   I've got to get it under control.

    • Over the past 15 years, the winning score has ranged from -10 to -20. Mostly around -13.  Here is Thursday and Friday weather. Saturday and Sunday weather. I think the course will play soft. Plenty of sky cover, lots of rain on Thursday. Fairways and greens will probably stay soft throughout the week.  In terms of tee times, I think Thursday morning and Friday afternoon have the biggest advantage. I bolded the big group of each set.  Most beneficial with the weather Round 1: No. 1 tee, Round 2: No. 10 tee 7:40 a.m., 12:30 p.m.: Mark Hubbard, Thorbjørn Olesen, Mac Meissner 7:52 a.m., 12:42 p.m.: Bud Cauley, Vince Whaley, Chandler Phillips 8:04 a.m., 12:54 p.m.: Emiliano Grillo, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Max Greyserman 8:16 a.m., 1:06 p.m.: Kevin Yu, Cam Davis, Gary Woodland 8:28 a.m., 1:18 p.m.: Ricky Castillo, Ryan Gerard, Patrick Cantlay 8:40 a.m., 1:30 p.m.: Adam Schenk, Garrick Higgo, Matt McCarty 8:52 a.m., 1:42 p.m.: Brian Harman, Maverick McNealy, Davis Riley 9:04 a.m., 1:54 p.m.: Sami Valimaki, Lucas Glover, Matt Fitzpatrick 9:16 a.m., 2:06 p.m.: Michael Brennan, Harris English, J.T. • We have a very difficult but mostly showy course this week. Lets see what they got. This course offers so many chances to get into trouble it is really a mental minefield. I am excited to see who can handle it and who cant. Last year we got a foreshadowing of JJ and Rory, I am excited for this year Who do people have winning? what will the winning score be? I am thinking 12 or 13 under
