Played in a scramble Thursday. Winning team of 6 shot a net 49. There gross score beat the 2nd place net score of 59. People were yelling out "CHEATERS", and other insults. But they still won...🤦‍♂️

A six person scramble WITH handicaps?

49 doesn’t seem at all out of the question.

I mean I’ve shot 53 playing with four and no handicaps.

Agree.  But how the hell do you handicap a scramble?!

I’ve seen it done where players get 10% of their handicaps and it adds up to the team handicap.

So a 20, 15, 12, and a 6 get 5.

But yeah … generally not handicapped and almost never SIX.

Yeah, you're a pro though. This is the 4th year I've played this tournament. All the other years the winning score has been mid to high 50's. This was a new group.

I played that round with 6 to 11 handicappers.

No string, mulligans, etc.

The power of 2 extra players in a scramble is huge.

6 decent (single digit players) can certainly birdie every hole and shoot 54 gross, without too much drama.  Throw in an eagle or two on the par-5’s, and whatever handicap strokes they get and 49 seems very doable.  Hell, maybe not even all that extraordinary...

🤷‍♂️...I guess so. It seems like a lot of eagles to get that low on a long course. 6500 yards.

Assuming par 72, you don’t need any gross eagles at all.  All birdies and 5 handicap strokes does it.

Good god a six person scramble?! How long did that take to play? While I have seen very very few handicapped scrambles they do exist, its like adding stealing to the cheating. 49 is not that bad though I once shot 50 (-22) in a four person scramble gross. Mind you it was 4 scratch golfers.

I once played in a 4 person scramble. My team was all guys playing on our home course. We were 10 under after 9 holes (totally legit). Here's the kicker, we finished the round at 8 under, in 5th place.

There may have been alcohol involved. … just staying.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

The longest scramble I ever played in was something called a "One Man Banked Scramble".  They only allowed threesomes.  You got one extra shot each time you hit the ball.  If you didn't use it you could "bank" the extra shot and use it later on the hole, but it didn't carry over to the next hole.  On a par 5 you could conceivably end up on the green with 5 attempts at that birdie!  That round took forever!  I will not play in one of those again.  If you think about it each player can average taking 8 or more shots per hole, except on par 3's.

Not sure if it's a scramble if alcohol isn't involved.😀

5 hrs. It wasn't a full field.

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.
