There's no penalty for accidentally moving the marker as long as it is replaced. I don't see why a moved marker is easier to replace than a club.

That is true under the 2019 Rules.  Prior to that, however, if a player accidentally moved the ball marker, and wasn't in the process of marking and lifting or replacing the ball, he was penalized.  This is old Rule 20-1, and clarified in Decision 20-1/5.5.  The risk of having the putter move or fall while the ball was lifted would be enough reason for serious players to avoid doing that.

I just searched and found the old Decisions here: https://golfcanada.ca/app/uploads/2015/03/DOTRO16-FINAL-Golf-Canada.pdf

Dave, did you just send out a 744 page document without mentioning what page you were referencing? Are you expecting me to READ?

Yeah, I read it. But it was a whole lot of scrolling there. A page number would have made it a lot easier.... just saying.

As @iacas mentioned, I did send you to the correct decision, and they do run in numeric order.  But if you scan through, you might learn something that you didn't intend to learn, and that's never a bad thing.  Of course, the thing you might learn isn't in effect any more, but still....

When I went through, I realized once again how many different things could happen to a ball, or a ballmarker, on the putting green, and how they were handled differently.  We may not approve of the idea that a player can be a bit careless, accidentally move a ball or marker without penalty, but it definitely is less complicated under the 2019 Rules.

To be honest, I always try to give a link to my source.  We see enough misinformation about rules (see earlier in this thread re the PGA Tour) that I'm happy to have my facts checked by others.

As it is a pdf why didn't you do a pdf search for '20-1/5.5'  ?

It would speed things up if you’d livestream your golf rounds. You know, get call-ins about rules violations.

LOL 😆 Hard laughing at this. between all of rule violations and swing advice being tossed at me if I did this I wouldn't make past the 1st hole.

Keep in mind, this statement is only true for a ball on the putting green. If clubhead is used to mark the ball not on the green and someone shouts "fore" and you look up, breaking contact between clubhead marking the ball and the ground, then you are done one shot penalty under R9.7b.

Check the link below.  Not rubbish

Your original quote was present tense: "That IS a PGA Tour rule." Something that may not have even happened decades ago.

Again: "That is a PGA tour rule.  You can't use the toe of your putter during PGA tour events. But with USGA events you can."

You've not proven anything.

I believe the PGA Tour no longer has their own rule re ball markers. They accepted that they should not modify a rule of golf.

Er, Feherty's reference to an elephant turd now being a permitted ball marker is not true under the current rules - a ball marker is an 'artificial object'. I hope he is not carrying one around in his bag.

I have used a putter for a ball mark. I have also used it as a measuring guide to move my marker, off to the side, out of another golfer's putting line.

I have also used little stones, broken tees, bottle cap, and even my divot tool.

The only "iffy" thing I ever saw was on a dew covered green. The guy used the left over ball trail as his mark. He replaced ball where the trail ended

My marker of choice is high dollar poker chip from a casino that closed down several decades ago.  So now the gambling website helps me to have fun.

As long as you're following the rules and keeping the game fair, a bit of creativity can make the game more enjoyable.

    • Presumably you had a rule book with you, I don't remember a phone app being available back then.  Clearly someone was wrong. Here's what the 2016-2018 rules said, per www.ruleshistory.com   Clearly he was wrong, and it seems tat you were right, if he wanted FREE relief from the path.  He certainly COULD take Unplayable Ball relief, for 1 Penalty Stroke, and drop within 2 clublengths, which apparently is what he did.      At this point, he has a new situation, and he certainly CAN take free relief from the cart path in this situation, and that relief certainly could put him in the fairway.
    • It's so funny. We actually looked it up years ago and that only lead to more debate. Each of us convinced we were correct.
    • I just found out, Face Balanced Is NOT Enough!  Turns out you need Face Balanced AND Face Down!  Check it out:  SQ Putter Hybrid - Performance Golf AS FEATURED IN: NEVER 3-PUTT AGAIN: New Putter Moves Straight Back Straight Through FOR YOU Why is a “straight back straight through” putter the easiest way to make more putts? Because that… ELIMINATES an open or... How on Earth do you expect to ever make a putt with the putter you are using!?!?!?!?!?!?
    • Okay, admittedly I'm sort of a Matsuyama fan.  I really don't have a problem with this. Did the golfer who shot the lowest score win? ... Yes. Did he cheat in some way? ... No. Athletes are getting better, faster, stronger, more highly trained, using statistical analysis, reaching a much deeper pool of potential players, etc...  Here's a fun bit of trivia.  In 1924 the lowest recorded "known" golf score for a 72-hole tournament on was 12 under par for a 276. (There may have been lower scores, but records from 1924 being what they were, this is believed to be the lowest at the time.)  Hideki Matsuyama shoots a 35 under 257. Okay that was on a par 73 course, but what ever. If we adjust the 1924 score of 276 for a par 73 course, that comes out to 280.  So, 280 in 1924 is less than 10% higher than 257 in 2024. In 1924 the world record for the mile was 4:10.4  In 2024 the world record for the mile is 3:43.13 That's an improvement of 11%.  So, over the last 100 years there's been a 10% improvement in golf and an 11% improvement in running the mile . .... It's funny that I don't hear any talk about making the mile longer? 😁     BTW - As you all know I went to a Wiccan woman who operated a boutique malt shop in Southern Rhodesias and math is hard so you may want to check my math... 🤷‍♂️
