Golfing in Singapore - any recommendations?

Hi All,

Looking for advice and experiences of golfing in Singapore. Any recommendations on the courses? It looks like Marina Bay Golf course is the only public course and rest are private and is expensive. 

Any tips/dos-donts is appreciated.

It's goofy expensive.  I went to watch the LPGA on the Sentosa course a couple years ago (Michelle Wie's last win).  I met a member and chatted for some time.  For a guest to play was even over 500-600 dollars.....If I recall correctly.  The course was gorgeous, but I didn't think it looked like an incredible playing challenge - and these Sentosa courses are supposed to be the best of the best.

 

Get some friends to schedule a day trip across the bridge and into Malaysia for the courses there. Singapore isn't super big, so driving anywhere isn't an issue, nor is going up to Malaysia...

That was my plan for my next trip - but cancelled at this moment due to the Corona Virus worries.....

How far in advance are you looking for recommendations? Sentosa Golf club was the highest rated combination of courses in Singapore in Tom Doak's latest Volume of the confidential guide to golf courses. I heard you have to book a little bit in advance though. Tanah Merah (Garden) was the next highest rank. It's closed Tuesday and Thursday morning. The courses you mentioned weren't rated as highly, but are probably worth checking out if your home course is a pretty average track.

If you don't know already, chewing gum and spitting are big no-nos in Singapore. That being said, it is a lovely place with a good subway to get around and lots of culture to see. China Town area is cool, little India, not so much. There is a cool hotel/casino The Marina Bay Sands in Marina Bay that looks like it has a boat on top of it. You can tour the top and you get a great view of the city.

Sentosa is a nice visit and has an amusement park. Clark Quay is a nice area for food and drink. Newton Circus is a lower cost food and drink area and gives you more local flavor. The famous Raffles Hotel where the Singapore Sling was invented is nice, but the drink is pricey. 

Dishes to try are Chili Crab, the national dish and Singapore Noodles, which has a sweet curry flavor. If found food pretty good everywhere.

The movie Crazy Rich Asians takes place in Singapore and gives a good feel of the country. Newton Circus is in the beginning where they go for food.

(Nice post - all good advice for sure.  I completely agree about the mass transit system - I will never get a taxi for my trips - so much easier to use the rail system.  though if he finds a course farther north he might not have a choice.....)

If you want a cab from the airport, tell them you want a City of Comfort cab. Otherwise,  the cab man as you exit will sense you are American (or foreigner, at least) and direct you to the limo and quasi limo at a much greater price. Avoid the Red Cabs, often for foreigners the meter seems to have broken. You do NOT have to take the first cab offered.

I used Uber when I was in Singapore. A few times I got a Mercedes S-class at the most basic rate. I don’t think I can play golf in Singapore - the heat and humidity...
