If it isn't SARS-COV-2, then it is certainly ignorance.

What authority does the USGA have to issue any “directive” to anyone?

They are the governing bodies of rules in the states....so for rules, they are the only one that has the authority to issue a directive as far as handicaps

Considering your lack of concern for the situation at hand, it's all "we" can really do. I honestly hope that you come around, stay safe, and respect your community, but all of your posts so far have indicated the exact opposite attitude for you. Please at least look at the curves and think about distancing yourself when possible. I don't think that most people are directly mad at you, but more the idea that you are perpetuating. I know that my last post was crass and aggressive, and I apologize, but I don't want anyone to suffer more than they have to.

  • If the player hits the raised cup so hard that it is unlikely that the stroke would have gone into a normal cup, then one additional stroke should be added to the hole for that player.
  • A ball just barely hitting the edge of a raised cup, that would likely not have gone into a normal cup - the player should add an additional stroke for posting.

I wonder how many will overlook those two statements? They will argue its a judgement call.

And they’d be right.

You didn't answer my last two points, not that you are obligated to. Don't act like you care about who touches what, though. You have been very clear about how you feel about the current situation, and unless your attitude has changed, you wouldn't care if they ran golf courses (and all other businesses) as they normally do. You are so disingenuous, and I think you know that but are afraid to admit it.

I’ve decided not to engage someone incapable of having a discussion without becoming abusive towards someone with an opinion they either don’t understand, or with which they don’t agree.

I haven't abused you at all. I think you are mistaking me for the other chap. Do you think that people should take precautions now, or are you still under that delusion that nothing is wrong? That is the only question I want answered. And the only reason that I want it answered is that you are commenting about how the situation is being handled by courses when, up to this point, your view has been that nothing should be done. Commenting on noodles vs raised cups really wouldn't be your business if you think that everything is fine and that the cups should be where they normally are and no precautions should be necessary.

I’ve NEVER said that nothing is wrong, or that nothing could be, or should be done.

Moreover, I’ve never proposed not abiding by guidelines when reasonable.  I do NOT maintain 6’ separation from all others at all times.  Neither do you.

Sorry if I mischaracterized you, but I was under the impression that you thought that being at the pool hall and not heeding guidelines was your stance. Do you even try to maintain a distance from others? Previously it seemed as if you weren't making any effort. Obviously the 6 feet has to be broken for certain things like monetary transactions, but I can't think of too many other situations where you can't maintain your distance.

Sorry for the sarcasm. I was a bit flabbergasted that no one seemed to be concerned about the cup.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
