What's the worst weather conditions you've ever golfed in. You know, when it's just absolutely horrid outside but you have that burning desire to just get out there and golf.

For me, I went golfing when it was so cold I couldn't put a tee in the tee box because it was frozen. And when I shanked a shot in to a water hazard in front of the green, it was ok ... because the ball slid across the ice and popped out the other side :)

i've played some october golf in vermont and although the temperature was only 36 degrees, a snow squall came up with fierce winds and we continued to play

played lots of time in torrential downpours but didn't consider those bad conditions as it was summer

It was my senior year in high school and I had just gotten my first set of golf clubs the night before (took the plastic off of them myself). The next day I skipped my last period to play a little par 3 course right across the street from the school. When I started out, it was really windy and looked a little bit ugly, but I didn't really care.

Right after I hit my teeshot on the 7th hole, it started raining really hard. I'm talking about Vietnamese monsoon hard. I was determined to keep going though. I put the hoodie on my bag and proceeded to the next hole. I tossed a ball onto the eighth tee and hit as soon as I could get my feet set. It was the best shot of my early golfing career, with the ball coming to rest about 10 feet from the whole (still in the torrential downpour, mind you).

So anyways, to wrap things up, when I was putting out on the ninth and final hole, the tornado siren started going off. So I ran and threw my clubs in the trunk and hit the road. With just a ten minute drive, I got home by 3:15. I found out the next day, that all of the students had been held at the school until about 4:30, while the storm was blowing over.

That is one of those memories that I will never forget.

The heat of July in Western PA

"People think the size of the head is most important. Wrong. It's getting a quality shaft. test different shafts to see which goes the straightest. Also, more degrees of loft on the head is better than less. Eleven degrees is about right."

I would say mine is a tie between:

1) Playing in 22 degree weather with greens as hard as cart paths. If my approach shot hit anywhere on the green, it took one huge hop and went off the back.

2) Last weekend after we had a few inches of rain the ground was just a swampy mess. Any shot that was not picked cleanly off the surface resulted in a mud bath. I actually topped an approach shot so bad that I put the ball about 3/4" down below the surface of the grass. Soupy.

July and August heat in Kentucky. Members can play for free on weekends, but only after 1 PM. Regularly topped 95 last year, and incredibly humid with a heat index over 100.

On the bright side, I did lose 20lbs that summer

Close runner-up would have to be the horrid, horrid mud I played in on the first of February. I hadn't been out in a month - it was a joke. Every shot sprayed mud, every ball plugged, and the ball might as well have tried to roll through a keg of molasses when on the green. I carded in a bigger number than I care to remember on that day, and I learned the hard way, a golf cart is not a 4x4...

Couple seasons ago I was on a men's church group golf vacation... we play 1/2 of our rounds in a ryder cup stlye contest... It was September in Northern Michigan snd the day started warm, but had cooled to about 65 when we started the afternoon round. Rain started light on front, by 12 it was steady, by 16 there were rivers running on the greens and fairway. On 17 green there was such strong runoff that if you didn't putt hard through it, the ball would stop in it and get washed off the green. It was absolutely insane and the temp was only about 60 and dropping when we finished.

These conditiones weren't that bad, but it was kind of funny...
Last week of February my wife and I were vacationing and it was chilly. We were playing Pine Needles the first day of our vacation and we nearly had the course to ourself. High for the day was about 45... but at one point it clouded up a bit and dropped a tiny bit of snow. At first I though something was falling from the trees, but it was snow ... couldn't believe it. It stopped after about 5 minutes and the flakes soon disipated, but it was pretty cool. A few holes later the sun finally came out and warmed us up to 45ish. My wife complained a little, but then she birdied the par 3 16th (her second birdie of her life) and it was all good after that. In fact she kept telling me how she got a birdie at Pine Needles and I didn't... in fact she even messed with me the next day when I again failed to make birdie (unlikely for me to go two rounds). I finally hit two in a row on the third day to redeem myself.

About a month ago i played in the most intense wind i had ever felt. On a par 5, only about 500 yards i played a low 3 wood off the tee, caught it sweet and it went about 210 into the wind, usually it will go about 250-260. Followed by another 3 wood that went 200 leaving me with 90 yards into the wind. I decided to play an easy nine, caught it really sweet, it headed straight for the green and then decided to come back on the wind about 25 yards!! I ended up only hitting the ball about 65 yards! Was absolutely incredible. Still managed to squeeze a 39 out though!!

Weather?

I played Star Pass TPC in Tucson one Summer day in 112 degree heat and drank about 10 bottles of water during the round. Brutal.

Worse conditions overall?

Any Tucson municipal course in the summer slightly beats out the course at the MACV compound in Saigon Vietnam during the Vietnam war, even when you factor in the possibility of being shot and killed on the MACV course. The Tucson munis are like playing in a 7,000 yard fairway bunker with varying hardness and thickness of sand and rocks.

Most intimidating?

I hate playing any hole with a steady wind of 25 mph or more blowing straight against play.

There were some horrible winds and cold weather New Years' Day, but it really affected my balance - I kept just taking more club to offset the wind's harm to play. But I had trouble putting, more than usual, due to balance.

The worst I felt while playing was my own fault. Last August, playing at Trilogy La Quinta, day 2 of a 2-day trip. I only owned one dri-fit golf shirt at this point in my life, so I played day two in a heavy cotton polo. Oh boy did I go through water.

Now I own six dri-fit type golf shirts and I'll probably own a few more by the summer start. This year, in Palm Springs, I'll be ready!

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Got on the TPC of Virginia Beach for free about a year ago and it was about 30 degrees with sleet and rain, with winds gusting 40 to 50 mph. I know some of the people up north have probably played in colder weather, but for me these conditions were brutal. I hit a knock down 5 iron on a 125 yard par three and barely got on the front of the green. Was glad when that round was over.

I've had a few.

1. A few years back we had a frost delay. We tee'd off and it was 25 degrees. By the 4th hole we were walking through some areas where the sun had not melted the frost yet and ice was building up on our spikes. We had to clean them between each shot.

2. Last Summer we had a league night where it was 104 degrees with 90% humidity. On top of that the mosquitos were awfull.

3. First round of the year in 07 it was 35 degrees when we teed off with 20 mph constant winds with gust of 40+. I also had back spasms so bad that I could barely tee up my own ball.

Played in a tournament with 70 mph winds once. The front side the winds were at 30-40 mph and then when I hit the 12th hole it got ridiculous. So windy it was hard to breath. Standbags don't work in that wind and the ball does some things I never imagined. Put it this way, on one par 4 into the wind I hit Driver, driver off the deck and a knockdown 8 iron all of which I hit pretty good into the par 4 green. The next day with no wind I hit driver, sand wedge into the same hole.

There was also a time me and two friends were playing and we managed to play through rain, sleet, snow, and hail all in the same round. It was actually a sublime experience.

    • Welcome! I think this forum is a great place to learn more about the golf swing. There are of course a ton of resources out there to find with search engines, books, videos etc., but it can be a challenge to navigate it all for the best content. There's a lot of misinformation out there. This forum already has a lot of existing content and you can start new topics yourself. One thing a forum provides is discussion, different points of view and a place to put your thoughts into words. The best way to learn is often by teaching, because you have to know what you are talking about. Most of us aren't teachers, instructors or pros, but we can still discuss the golf swing, use the resources we find and put it into our own words. If we get it wrong, someone else may point it out. If you want to share, the Member Swings subforum is a place to post your own swing and get feedback. Technology has come a long way, and combined with dedicated people around the world, it's easier than ever to find accurate information. They use the best players in the world to find commonalities and distill the golf swing down to what is almost universally true for all the best players. That means to ignore Scheffler's feet, Furyk's octopus and other outliers, but focus on what they have in common. The essentials which amateurs should also try to achieve.
    • So I'm a 2 handicap and I know my golf swing is garbage but I also know I have a very very limited understanding of how the golf swing works. And I also know that I'm the type of guy that likes to dive ultra deep into topics I'm interested in. Like for example; The past few years I've learned video editing (specifically how to make videos that go viral on social media), and I've spent a lot of time just reading the manual that came with one of the video editing programs I use. (the manual is 4.5k pages, and obviously very indepth, but I've learned a ton with it.) So far to try and learn more about the golf swing I've read books + listened to podcasts/interviews with coaches/teachers combined with listening to great players talk/give clinics. Sometimes the teacher being interviewed talks about books that they really like, or coaches they look up to, and then I "travel down the knowledge tree" and try to look for those peoples interviews, content etc. Ex, An interview with Randy Smith led me to Chuck Cook, then Chuck Cook led me to reading the books by Jim Hardy (mainly the + and - book). I'm well aware that the knowledge I'm getting is surface level but again I don't really know where to "go" to learn in depth about the swing. To try and supplement the knowledge gap, I've made a set-up in my basement where I have two mirrors + a webcam I can use to film myself and dissect my own swing + watch pro swings and try to figure out what they do. But again, I know I'm not really getting the full picture. So my question is, is there a better place to go/process I could apply to learn about the golf swing? I know there's The Golfing Machine but isn't that mostly outdated information now, and there's no real updated version, right? I don't really want to hire a teacher, partly because I don't really trust most teachers (I've had some really bad experiences lol), and I want to be self-sufficient as a player. My line of thinking is, the better I can understand the golf swing, the better I can understand my own swing. Where do I go? Also I should note, I have a ton of time to devote to the game + the golf swing, I basically work from home and I'm in a very fortunate position where I have a very low living cost. Cheers.
    • Day 43: Hit 20 balls with 6-iron, working with new feel. Seemed to work okay, but start line is a little more right than I’d like to see. Hit 15 Almost Golf balls with driver, same feel. Did pitching.chipping practice, focusing on good contact. Putted in home office for 20 min using my dog’s Kong as a target.
