I have always had a flattish back swing returning to the ball on an 'in to out' plane (my hands return to the ball inside the backswing plane and my shaft plane is also flatter on the downswing). A push draw/hook was my natural shot.

This winter I have been working very hard on steepening my backswing, especially holding the angle of my right elbow and in turn a straighter left arm at the top. This has led to the flattening action increasing on my downswing and reaching impact with an open club face. I am presently hitting a push fade because I am struggling to get the club face square/closed at impact.

The transition into the downswing is where I am feeling uncomfortable or should I say alien. I can't feel my club head as vividly during transition/down swing with this back swing alteration.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Your problem is not that your backswing is flat.

Well, I helped develop it but my swing could be reinvented.

Yes it gets too much behind me and I'm working on that but my flatter swing had similar elbow conditions. Surely that can't be why my club face is open at impact.

Sorry to hear that.

Regarding your golf swing, still photos aren’t going to cut it.

Good luck.

Thanks!

Truth is my Mum's well rid of him. Her life was hell. He hated Xmas, birthdays, you, morning people, mornings and people.

Maybe I'm strange, but if a swing instructor who knows his stuff as well as anyone is giving me FREE advice I think I'd give him a  chance to help me rather than shutting him down.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

I'm happy to receive any advice and "The problem is your right elbow" is a throw away piece of free advice, but is it really helpful?

Something more constructive like, "Take a look at this Pat Perez video where he explains how he solved the same problem after steepening his swing. Or another video where Rick Fowler got really flat on the downswing or go to page 48 of the 'Little Red Book' where Harvey Keitel describes this common fault in detail."

Now that would be helpful.

Some folks with various issues and some knowledge of the swing, may have felt pointing out the position of your right elbow being the problem was a very helpful piece of information.

I can’t speak for @Shorty, but your response seemed to be dismissive rather than following up with a question to Iacas’s response with something like “what do you mean by that?” You seemed to close the interaction, as Shorty phrased it, “shutting him down.”

ultimately, like anyone else on this forum, if you are really interested in fixing your swing, we are going to want to see a video (dynamic swing) in order to identify issues and make corrective recommendations...and you shut that down as well.

No, I acknowledged his reply and only pushed him for perhaps a little more. I did realise that he was finished with me when he said I should ask my all-knowing dad.

    • Day 24 9-7 Worked on lower body movement with full swing. Focused on hips. Need to work on setup a bit. Was hoping to get to the short game area today, stayed home and recorded some swings instead. I've come to the conclusion I learn the most with my practice setup at home, just a net and a hitting strip. Overall happy with the progress this week.
    • Day 2 (September 7), still with the grip and the medicine ball (using weights).   Still on vacation and really aching to be able to do a full practice the way I'd be able to at home.  Also bought a 1/2" section of pipe today at the hardware store and have been regularly practicing the grip with that too while watching Sunday football with the family.
    • Day 1: Worked on feels for wedge swings. Primarily getting everything to move from the top of the backswing in the correct sequence.
    • Day 6 (7 Sep 25) - Afternoon pitch session with the 54 and 58 in the backyard. Keys: Alignment - Setup - Smooth swing thru - working on each to be as “automatic” as possible - not mindless, but deliberately repeatable. I have found the precision required to properly execute carries well into the full swings.
    • 180% is the threshold. But yeah, many of them are close to 200%. Not 120 and 123%. People generate speed differently. I think your speed will come more easily when this stuff gets sorted out. Stay disciplined. Stay on the road. You can't get off exit 74 before you hit exit 32.
