Howdy y'all. I've taken a long break from golf, and things have really changed. I actually found this site while looking around to see if Snake Eyes clubs from old Golfsmith were still a thing, and sure enough, some of you yahoos are still playing them. Well, me too, but that's probably going to change pretty soon, but you guys seem pretty cool.

If you've ever wanted to wake someone up from a coma to tell them what has happened in the world of golf for the last 10 years, I'm your guy. I'm actually really sad about what has happened to golfsmith, but it's pretty cool to see these new driver that you can just change the loft and the shaft with a little wrench.

I'm looking forward to getting to know some folks here, getting some advice on clubs, advice on kids golfing, and insight on kids clubs.

WITB:

  • Nike Sasquatch driver, lucky 13
  • Titleist 970F strong 4
  • Snake Eyes irons, not sure which model by name, but they are oversized cavity back through the 6, and then they transition to the rescue style hybrid club
  • Snake Eyes 51° gap wedge (I love this club)
  • Rusty 588 sand wedge
  • Shiny wilson 8802 putter

Welcome to TST and welcome back from  your coma. As you may have discovered there are plenty of options out there for clubs. We now have SGI ( Super Game Improvement) , GI ( Game Improvement), Player’s Distance irons, and of course your cavity backs and muscle backs. Almost every major brand has a series of all or some of these categories.
The general consensus these days is to get a good fitting done and see what works for you. Find a few brands you like, even if it’s just due to looks/price. eBay, 2ndSwing, Callaway Pre-owned are some places to find great deals on golf clubs.

If you want some current golf mechanic content we have plenty of that here as well. Look around and enjoy and post in the many different topics we have here. You can even start a ‘My Swing’ thread in the ‘Members Swings’ section and get some swing advice. Cheers!

Welcome to TST.

The driver you reference is pretty cool.  I have one and quite like it. :-)  My 4-wood is also adjustable.

As for kids golfing:  my guess is when they want to.  My sort-of niece has a plastic set (I think?) from her father and I told them that when she wants to play, I'm happy to treat to materials including buying her her first set of clubs.

@BeauJoe - welcome to TST. Don't worry about older clubs.  Quite a few of us here have them.  The oldest clubs at home are a Dunlop set from 1986, which I use when I don't want to travel with my clubs from my apartment in the city to our coffee estate

What's in the bag

  • Taylor Made r5 dual Draw 9.5* (stiff)

Thanks for the welcome. I'm figuring out the kid stuff. My kids are 6th grade and 3rd grade. I bought them a set of top flight clubs to share for now, but my 6th grader is really on the high end of height for the clubs, and I'm going to need a 2nd set. So my youngest one is all set for now, I just need to do some figuring on the oldest one.

As far as actually playing with them, I've got to get that figured out as well, and I'm interested to hear about others' experiences. We have a par 3 course nearby, and that's a good start.  Thus far, I've let them hit a shot off the tee, and then I ask them to take their ball up to the green. I've only had them out twice so far, and they had a blast, so it is something they seem to want to continue doing.

Yeah, I agree that club technology, especially for irons, hasn't changed that much in recent times. My biggest objection to my clubs is that as the offset gets bigger as I get to the 3 iron, it takes what is usually a mild draw and turns it into a much more pronounced draw bordering on a hook with the longest irons.

    • Feel like you are left side dominant. Keep the back of your glove running through impact. Keeps leading edge down without digging. You will pick them clean with some zip if the grass is nice and generally acceptable results off anything less than ideal. Works with both hingy or dead hand pitches and chips.
    • Day 52 (30 Apr 26) - Had planned a solo round, got invited to be part of trio that included a fmr mini tour pro.  Was fun playing back a set of tees and having to stay in my game plan. Both were very engaging and encouraging in the round.  A good day in working through and making smarter shot choices.
    • Day 576 - 2026-04-30 Put my playlist on and slowed down a little as things were meh. Mostly got to an exaggerated P6 and hit from there.
    • I mean, a golfer is trespassing and damaging property. So, golf rules don’t supersede state laws. 😉 Like, if it isn’t marked and is off golf property. The right thing to do is take an unplayable lie or take stroke and distance.  Also, this is a liability for the course. The homeowner could easily say the course is liable for damage done because they knowingly didn't mark their boundaries which allowed golfers to trespass and damage property.
    • Interestingly enough, if the course (the Committee in Rules terms) doesn't mark the boundaries, there is nothing out of bounds.  I realize that neighboring homeowners would take a dim view of golfers whacking balls from their backyards, but that's what the Definition of Out of Bounds requires. "All areas outside the boundary edge of the course as defined by the Committee."
