Change Balls According to Conditions?

    I have changed balls in response to conditions starting in the late 80's when quality 2 piece balls became available. Now days I will still do so. Spinning a ball has never been an issue for me so I usually play a TP5X to tone it down a bit on normal greens. I will switch to a regular TP5 on firmer greens, and go to a Bridgestone BX when I really want to get serious bite. No I am not a Titleist hater, heck I play Titleist irons. I simply seem to get more consistent spin and feel from the aforementioned balls than either model Pro V. We have had a couple days of off and on precipitation, with more expected tonight.   I will start out with a Bridgestone E12. Fabulous ball for a mid spin ball off the longer clubs, and on partial wedge shots spins quite predictably. If it is still spinning too much to control the drawback on soft greens, I will drop to a Callaway Warbird. Yep, there it is, I said it. Nice firm low spin ball that goes like hell off the woods.......

 

    I find it a lot easier to make adjustments to the course conditions changing balls than changing my swing. If you change balls to meet conditions, whats do you use, when and why? I am always open to new things to try...

I will playing in Scotland this upcoming summer and have considered playing Titleist’s AVX only because they claim to have a more penetrating ball flight. No idea if that’s true, but figured I prob wouldn’t notice a big difference one way or the other so why not try it? Anyone have feedback on that?

Changing golf balls won't really help when you are close to the green, unless your original ball is a distance one and you move to a tour ball.  Moving away from a tour ball to something with less spin and possibly lower and more penetrating flight is somewhat helpful if the ball suits your swing (compression, spin etc) but also if you can adjust to it around the greens

The reasoning behind my swapping is spin in relation to green softness. 10-15 yards off the tee doesn't affect scoring nearly as much as excessive spin and bite pulling the string on a wedge and ending 25' below the hole.........

I have tried the AVX... less spin, lower flight.

If you are able to get good spin on a wedge shot every time, you are hitting the club well.  If a green is soft but you hit the ball badly, it won't spin back, it will more or less stop.  Spinning a ball back is about putting revolutions on the ball with your strike.  I would suggest getting 15 yards closer to the hole is better for your score than spinning it excessively with your wedge, unless you are gonna 3 and 4 putt every hole from 25 feet

I try to use a lower compression ball in the winter, that's about it.   I tried the Mizuno RBX for windy conditions and I can't tell a difference.    The greens where I play have a lot of slope on them, so pitching and chipping (on the rare occasions I can) is really governed more by whether you hit and upslope or downslope.   I've never really chosen a ball for green side spin, more for what feels good on the putter.

For those talking about AVX, I do love that ball!
