Hey everyone,

getting back into the game for the first time in a decade and need some thoughts on iron specs. I’ve shrank a bit as I’ve gotten to be middle aged but my current specs are 6’’1 with a wrist to floor of 37.  I used to be a solid 6’2 1/2 and play to a 7 or 8 handicap.  I played at that time a .5 inch longer maroon dot i5.  I struggled with pulling irons left a bit but could it somewhat under control

would a standard length eye 2 Ping white dot be a decent place to start?  Wondering if I’m too tall for a standard length...some charts say I’m good some say no good.  6’1 with a 37wtf. What say the experts

Hello there! Well, I’m not an expert but I’ve done my fair share of club fitting. I can’t say I’m a big fan of static fitting. People swing in so many different ways it’s hard to just go by physical data. Hell I’m 6’2 and play a four degree flat lie. I know it’s a less favorable answer but getting fitted properly can really save you a lot of trial and error.

Ideally take some lessons first and then get fit.  That way you will have some swing to base your fitting on

What's in the bag

  • Taylor Made r5 dual Draw 9.5* (stiff)
  • Cobra Baffler 4H (stiff)
  • Taylor Made RAC OS 6-9,P,S (regular)
  • Golden Bear LD5.0 60* (regular)
  • Aidia Z-009 Putter
  • Inesis Soft 500 golf ball

I won’t be taking any lessons.  My goal is to get back to a single digit handicap which I think is doable with practice and patience.

just curious about specs off that baseline.

Why?

Short answer is fine. It's OT here.

I’d have to travel over an hour to get any for one…simply seeking some thoughts on club length based on my static measurements.

There are club sites where you can plug in your static measurements and it’ll show the static fitting recommendations.

From what you've listed here. I think Ping Eye-2 white dot is a perfectly fine place to start.

You can always do the dry erase marker test (sharpie test) and see if the lie is correct for you. ... Or at least close. Then if over time you feel you need to, your irons can be bent a degree or two.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

    • This is a decent sized carpet python we had to move from beside the green on Hole 3 at my home course. These are non-venomous but would give a damn painful bite and you’d be almost certain to get an infection without antibiotics.    The ones you need to avoid that are common here are eastern browns and redbelly blacks. They are angry and aggressive if provoked whatsoever. And deadly. So it ain’t worth looking for a ball in long grass!
    • I'm having trouble picturing this. Could you take a photo of the area with your ball near where it was, or draw a picture, or point us to Google Earth or something?
