  1. 1. When you miss the green, what club do you chip/pitch with

I wanted to throw this out there and see what other people do. I put myself in the second category. Anytime I miss a green I automatically grab the SW. Occasionally, I will grab the LW also and decide when I get to the ball. 90% of the time I will use the SW unless a flop shot is the very best option with minimal risk.

I have played with tour pros to the person who can't hit out of his shadow. Everyone seems to have a different approach to these shots and I was curious to see what you do.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Unless i have to fly over something or flop it, I use a gap wedge 30 yards and in most of the time, even from bunkers. Matter of fact, the 56 is the least used of all of my scoring clubs..

A gap wedge is a 52, correct?

As for me, if I'm just off the green I will usually grab anything from a 9 iron to a PW to a 56, play it back in my stance and try to get a couple hops and a bite. Flop isn't used unless absolutely necessary.

If I have green to work with I rarely use a lob wedge. I was always taught to get the ball rolling as soon as possible so I always choose the least lofted club possible. If i am just off the putting surface and have a long chip 40-50 ft. I often use a 5 or 6 iron.

If there is a litle fringe and a long roll to the hole I'll use anything from PW to 7 iron.

If there is little green to work with I use 56 sand wedge or 60 lob wedge.

I really do not have a favorite, I use the club that I think will fit the situation.

For me its related to practice time. When I have more time to practice I vary my club selection less, instead I vary my swing and limit my club variables instead. I normally go with the pitching wedge 50 percent of the time, sw 20 percent, lw 20 percent, 9iron, hybrid, gw make up the rest. More practice time doubles my sw and lw use, for me it takes extra practice time to get consistent spin and distance control with those clubs.

9 out of 10 times I use a 56/SW. Once in a while I'll grab the LW. One situation where I used the LW was when we were playing in a misting rain. Since I couldn't seem to generate spin or get it to check very well (due to wet ball, wet greens), I used the LW to get more loft for a better chance of drop and stop. I'm not much of a "bump and run" chipper. I like air time and a check. It's more predictable for me.

The more the carry, it is usually a 56* sand wedge. The closer to the fringe, it is usually a pinched pw.

I learned just the opposite. I throw the ball 5 feet in front or 5 feet behind with spin depending on the greens and the situation...

Anything near the green I am usually pulling out both my 50* and 56* and will hit the one my lie/distance/obstacle dictates.

Your third poll answer basically sums it up, there could be obstacles infront of you, Inclines, trees, etc. And also it all depends on what the pin position is and what distance you have.

Something between a lob wedge and a 3-wood.. Depends...

on the lie, the wind, the firmness of the green, how far to carry, elevation changes, how much green to work with, etc.

    • It’s winter here and time hitting at my indoor place.  This year I bought and sold a few sets so I didn’t settle in on anything. For this coming season, starting now I have a choice to make.  What set would you guys use? 1.  Nike Vapor Pro irons - They are like new, hit them some last year before I had to demo other sets.  I love them, original grips, barely used so I’m almost not wanting to use them to keep their value up.  Standard LLL and standard grips. 2. Taylormade P7TW irons - Still in the box.  Got them over a year ago but had too much to hit, never used them.  Have used a set in the past and loved them.  Ended up with my own set custom fit to me -1/4”, 1 degree flat midsize grips.  These are probably not as valuable because they are still available and they are fit to me. I hate to put the Nikes away but it makes more sense to save them than the TW’s…. I dunno….
    • Day 215 (3 Dec 24) - Another very chilly day - opted to work on easy pitches in the backyard. Worked thru the irons and wedges - focused on foot position and tempo.
