Scott, it's the "makable" putts challenge. You should pick putts a Tour player can make at least 10-15% of the time.

Sure, you might get hot and make two 45' putts and get 82 points or something… but that's not the purpose or role of the game.

Which is why it starts out with: "I created a game for someone who tends to leave too many putts from 8-15’ short."

Thanks. I was trying to read the instructions on my iPhone and missed that part.

As you should, yes. You don't just hit the same putt over and over again, you pick 10 different putts.

27 isn't bad for a first attempt.

I tried it again with putts in the 8-15’ range. I put 5 balls around a hole in that distance range at different angles. Then repeated on a different hole. Two or three other putts lipped out. If the intent is to get better a not leaving putts short, it was an improvement.

  1. 1 putt from 9’, 5
  2. 2 putt Long 12’, 6
  3. 2 putt Long, 13’ 7
  4. 2 putt long, 12’ 8
  5. 2 putt short, 12’, 7
  6. 2 putt long 9’, 8
  7. 2 putt long, 12’, 9
  8. 2 putt long 13’, 10
  9. 2 putt long 14’, 11
  10. 2 putt long 15, 12

I did this challenge today:

1. 2 putt from 5' long    1pt

2. 2 putt from 12' long   1 pt

3. 2 putt from 15' long   1pt

4. 1 putt from 6'              2 pt

5. 2 putt from 18' long    1 pt.

6. 2 putt from 12' long     1 pt.

7. 2 putt from 15' short     -1 pt.

8. 2 putt from 18' long      1 pt.

9. 2 putt from 12' long      1 pt.

10. 2 putt from 5'               1 pt.

9 points. For all of the 2 putts except one, I left tap ins. All putts were from different directions on four different holes on the practice green

Tough challenge, but will be good for my playing in the long rung because my first attempt reflects what I really do during a round.

Tried this out today:

  1. 9 foot putt short: -1
  2. 10 foot make: 6
  3. 12 foot 2 putt: 1
  4. 15 foot 2 putt: 1
  5. 20 foot 2 putt: 1
  6. 6 foot 3 putt: -3
  7. 9 foot make: 5
  8. 12 foot make: 8
  9. 20 foot 2 putt: 1
  10. 19 foot make: 15

Total: 34

Got lucky with the last make. That 3 putt was pretty ugly and cost me the highest score. Oh well.

Okay, I did this today. Perhaps I did it just a little differently than everyone else. I put 5 balls in a circle around the hole at 8 feet. (Sort of the "clock drill" everyone is familiar with but with only 5 balls and at 8 feet.) Then after I putted those, I did the exact same thing, but put the 5 galls in a circle around the hole at 12 feet. Here are my results:

  • 8 foot - past the hole - 2 putt = +1 points
  • 8 foot - past the hole - 2 putt = +1 points
  • 8 foot - made it = +4 points
  • 8 foot - past the hole - 2 putt = +1 points
  • 8 foot - 3 putt = - 4 points
  • 12 foot - past the hole - 2 putt = +1 points
  • 12 foot - made it = +8 points
  • 12 foot - past the hole - 2 putt = +1 points
  • 12 foot - not past the hole - 2 putt = -1 points
  • 12 foot - past the hole - 2 putt = +1 points

Total = 13 points.

I look forward to trying this again to improve upon that 13 points.

Okay, I tried this again today. At the end of my practice session I went to the putting green and gave this a shot.

  • 8 foot - past the hole; 2 putt = +1 point
  • 8 foot - made it; +4 points
  • 8 foot - made it; +4 points
  • 8 foot - past the hole; 2 putt = +1 points
  • 8 foot - past the hole; 2 putt = +1 point
  • 15 foot - past the hole; 2 putt = +1 points
  • 15 foot - past the hole; 2 putt = +1 points
  • 15 foot - past the hole; 2 putt = +1 points
  • 15 foot - not past the hole; 2 putt = -1 points
  • 15 foot - way past the hole; 3 putt 🤣 = -7.5 points

Total +5.5 points.... Argh!

I so badly wanted to make a 15 footer. That 3 putt at the very end killed me. Feels like a choke. 🤮

  2. 6'      1 pt.
  3. 9'      1 pt.
  4. 11'    1 pt.
  5. 20'    1 pt.
  6. 6'      2 pts
  7. 9'      5 pts
  8. 5'      1 pt.
  9. 18'    1 pt.
  10.  7'     3 pts

Good work. You kept it together on the last one. I didn't. I left the second to last one short and blazed the last one way past and 3 putted to ruin my score. You, on the other hand, showed great consistency.

Thanks. I had one hole on which I putt the first putt about 5' by. Talk about a pressure comebacker!

Tried this again today. I actually tried it twice. Once at the start of my practice session and once at the end. This is the better of my two efforts.

  • 10 foot - past the hole - 2 putt = +1 point          1
  • 10 foot - past the hole - 2 putt = +1 point          2
  • 10 foot - made it = +6 points                               8
  • 10 foot - past the hole - 2 putt = +1 point           9
  • 10 foot - made it = +6 points                               15
  • 16 foot - past the hole - 2 putt = +1 point           16
  • 16 foot - made it = +12 points                               28
  • 16 foot - past the hole - 2 putt = +1 point            29
  • 16 foot - past the hole - 2 putt = +1 point            30
  • 12 foot - past the hole - 2 putt = +1 point            31

31 points is a huge improvement for me. I think the key to this game is to focus on speed. ... Hmm.... I wonder if that's true of "real" putting? Getting them all just past the hole improves your score. I did have 2 knee-knockers on the way back to avoid the score killing 3-putt. But I sank them both so they didn't hurt me.

    • The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO
