I wonder if that's true of "real" putting? Getting them all just past the hole improves your score.

Get them past the hole and some of them even go in. It’s like that Wayne Gretzky quote.

I did have 2 knee-knockers on the way back to avoid the score killing 3-putt.

You don’t really want to putt it 3’ past the hole, though.

Okay, I did this twice more today.
The first time was weak so we won't talk about it.
The second time was pretty good.

  • 12 footer past the hole - 2 putt = +1 point          1
  • 12 footer past the hole - 2 putt = +1 point          2
  • 12 footer made = +8 points                                 10
  • 12 footer past the hole - 2 putt = +1 point          11
  • 12 footer made = +8 points                                  19
  • 16 footer made = +12 points                                31
  • 16 footer made = +12 points                                43
  • 16 footer past the hole - 2 putt =  +1 point          44
  • 16 footer past the hole - 2 putt = +1 point            35
  • 16 footer past the hole - 2 putt = +1 point            46

Okay, I made 46 points but I'm not sure if I'm cheating. Here's the way I've been doing it. I put 5 balls around the hole in a clock drill style formation. (I'm sure you are all familiar with the clock drill) I put them all at 12 feet from the hole. Then I work my way around the hole hitting each 12 footer. If I miss I hit the second putt and continue until the ball is holed. So, each putt breaks a bit differently, but I kind of get some information based on what the other putts did. Then I reset the clock drill but this time I put the balls all at 16 feet. Then work my way around. So, yeah each putt is different, but I suppose you could argue that I am getting information about the break from other putts. AND I'm also kind of zeroing in my 12 foot putt distance and then also my 16 foot putt distance.

So, you tell me. Is that legal? Or am I cheating? I mean conceivably I could set up all ten balls in the clock formation setting them all at 15 feet. Which I was thinking of trying next time.

Yeah, that's not really how you're supposed to do it.

Put a ball down, putt it to a hole, then put another ball down somewhere else, almost kinda random, putt to a different hole… etc.

You don't get a bunch of 12-footers in a row on the course.

Gave this a go a couple of days ago. I do tend to leave putts short but in this one I didn’t leave a single one short, I did 3 putt a comebacker that I shouldn’t have.

All different putts to different holes except maybe some to the same hole but from a different direction:

1. 12” made 8 points

2. 10” 2 putt long 1 point

3. 11” 3 putt long -5.5 points

4. 8” made 4 points

5. 14” 2 putt long 1 point

6. 10” 2 putt long 1 point

7. 13”

8. 11”

9. 15”

10. 15”

Last 6 were 2 putt long two of them lipped out  14.5 points. Bad but I did take a lot of long ones in the end going for points where maybe 4 8”-10” were a better strategy

This looks interesting to me, but I have one question. You said if you three putt you get -1/2 the distance. If it's a 20 footer then you get -10 and if it's a 10 footer you get -5, but three putting from 10 feet is worse than three putting from 20 feet, so that feels backwards. Wondering what the thinking is there.

Bigger risk.

You shouldn't be three-putting from 10 feet, so… the game still encourages you to get the ball past the hole, but not SO FAR past the hole that you three-putt.

    • Something just popped into my head, based on your mention of the folks who "know the rules" but are generally wrong.  Another comment I read was "the Rules ALWAYS said.....".  When I come across those I often go to  www.ruleshistory.com to see if the rules ever said that.  You can find every (almost?) version of the rules since the first set in 1744.  Its fun to return to the conversation and say "You're a little bit right, the rules said that at one time, but that changed in 1984.  You've been playing under the wrong rule for 40 years!"
    • Hi, checking back in to see if any St. Louis area golfers get together for a round or three during the year.  I have recently dropped my membership in a local league this year to work on my game and meet other people.  I would love to hear from anyone that would be interested in meeting for a round in the St. Louis area.   Rick
