GolfPod 2.0 Tripod Discussion

@billchao and I received the GOLFPOD at Golf Evolution to try out and review as both of us film our swings and post often in the Member Swings section of The Sand Trap.

I’ve used several different types of camera and iPhone holders filming over the years including cheap ones, clip-ons that clip to your bag and even the stick in the ground type. I prefer tripods for their stability. I also like ones that can adjust for uneven surfaces. My driveway in MA has no level spot. You can spend hundreds on a professional tripod, but that’s more money than most of us want to spend. Golfers also want one small enough to fit into your bag.

The GOLFPOD is small, light and not too expensive with new 2.0 models at $69 and $86 with a special 25% off offer that is running for a few more day. Normal price is $90 and $115. The $69 version is similar to this model. The $86 has a magnetic smartphone and tablet holder. This review is of the original GOLFPOD.

The tripod comes in a small box which demonstrates its small folded up size.

This version came with a smartphone holder and a larger tablet holder. There is also a Bluetooth remote.

The shortest height is shown below. This could be used if you’re filming bunker shots where the lip is well above your feet.

Normal hand height is shown here. The tubes extend by twisting counterclockwise from above. The manual suggests you fully extend then push the thinner tubes in to get to your preferred height. They include a small permanent marker for you to mark this position.

Fully extended it is pretty tall. So it can be useful for things other than golf.

This shows how you would set up for your swing. This is @billchao doing a GEARS lesson.

My first impression is very positive. The GOLFPOD is light but sturdy. It unfolds easily and is quick to set up. Top is adjustable in two axis so you can level it if the feet aren’t on a level surface. It folds up quite small and can fit into the larger pockets of my golf bag. The smartphone holder and Bluetooth remote can fit in the bag as well. I filmed a few swings at Golf Evolution using it.

I will try the Bluetooth at some point and report back. I also want to put it on grass and very uneven surfaces to see its stability and ease of leveling the smartphone.

Initial glance and maybe @boogielicious can comment more,

1. I am not a fan of the spring style phone holders for tripods. Maybe their version is better, but I had one where the phone would drop out all the time.
2. It seems good only for flat ground? Many ranges are not flat, and if you can't adjust each leg separately then the tripod will be leaning.
3. The cost seems pretty expensive for what you get. I think you can get a much sturdier tripod and phone attachment for equal to or less.
4. It is nice that you can put the entire thing in your golf bag. So, the compact nature is a plus.

Phone isn't dropping out of this one.

You can adjust the angle of the phone holder. It's on a swivel.

It's pretty small folded up, yeah.

I oriented my phone holder a bit more centrally than Scott did:

They say the best camera is the one you have with you… well, the best tripod may be the one that fits in your golf bag.

I haven’t spent as much time with mine as @boogielicious has but I think it’s pretty good. My current tripod and mount setup is a GorillaPod with a Square Jellyfish mount for the phone and it comes out to about the same price. That setup is pretty versatile for uneven ground but also more annoying to work with if you don’t have a surface to stand it on and have to wrap it around something to use it.

I will use the GolfPod for most of my filming when I practice at home which is 90% of my filming work.

It works pretty well on the uneven terrain of my messy yard. It’s hard to tell from the picture but the corner of the tile it’s on in the second picture is curled up almost 2” above the others.

I had to use the tablet mount for my phone due to the case being too thick for the phone mount, but the spring held it very securely. It was also easy to adjust the level on the phone.

My biggest issue with it is that I have a tendency to unlock the telescoping arm when I’m trying to turn it, which results in a section collapsing while I’m adjusting my frame. The mechanism works by rotating the arm clockwise to lock it and counterclockwise to unlock it. I would have liked it to be longer (taking more of a turn before unlocking) or less sensitive. I can pivot the tripod using the feet to avoid this problem but it’s slightly counterintuitive.

I was lucky enough to get to try this product as well. The first thing I'd like to say about The GolfPod is that I was surprised by its sturdiness. I'm a bit of a clutz and even after dropping it in the parking lot or at the range, there are no signs of anything being damaged or chipped.

The second thing I like about it is the portability. As @iacas mentioned previously, a good tripod fits in your bag and that is certainly true.

Phone in The GolfPod holder. (Ignore the old phone used haha)

The holder is one of the better ones that I have used in a tripod. It has a very firm grip on the phone and even when I tug on the phone to try and remove it has very good resistance. If you are on uneven surface, you can rotate the holder so you can keep your phone at the correct angle to film.

The last thing I wanted to highlight is the holder for the Bluetooth button. I think it's nice that there is a place to keep the button so you don't have to worry about losing it. I cannot speak about the functionality of the button as of yet, but having it on the tripod itself is a nice touch.

Overall, The GolfPod is a tripod I would recommend to anyone who needs one. It's easy to set up and use while you work on your swing. My favorite thing about The GolfPod is how easy it is to keep around by putting it in your golf bag. Because of its size, I no longer have an excuse to not film my swing while I work on it. That is an excuse I often give myself haha. But definitely check out The GolfPod and you won't be disappointed if you do purchase one.

This looks like a better version of the Live View LivePod tripod. I just ordered one with the MagSafe mount.

    • "Positional" shots? How do we do that? I am using the V3 and edit on my laptop.
    • No, I'm not talking about "six footers uphill, slightly right to left." I'm going to indulge myself and talk about my favorite putts that I've ever hit. In no particular order… #9 at Whispering Woods The hole was cut middle left, and I was back right with about 40 feet to the hole, and six to eight feet of break. @DrizZzY (he'll be a semi-common theme here) was about 25' from the hole and he said "Do you need me to mark that" as his ball was really close to my line. I saw the line really, really clearly and, like the cocky jerk I am, said something like "no, leave it. I think I have to just miss your ball to make this." I saw my ball as having to pass within a few millimeters of his ball… and going in the middle. Well, I hit the putt, and as it passed his ball missing it by maybe 1.5cm… I said "ahhhhh, pulled it a little…" and… the ball fell in the left-center of the hole. I smirked at Sculley and he just said "you're such an ass." 🤣 I know I said in no particular order, and that might be true for the rest… but this one is clearly tops on my list. I saw the line so clearly, it was a touchy, delicate putt… and I knew I'd pulled it just that little bit, and my speed was perfect. His ball was fifteen feet from mine, and the putt broke 8'! Might be the greatest putt, given the call I made, I'll ever hit. #13 at Lawsonia Links I cared about a few rounds in Wisconsin on our 2021 trip (thanks again @cipher), and the 13th had gotten me a bit. I was in a bunker, and someone not NOT named @DeadMan had told me I could just chip a 7I out and still be fine… well, the 7I left me 250 in, so my 3W finished just left of the green… and about 10' below the green. I hit a decent pitch to 25' or so… this putt broke only about 2-3', but burying that one was satisfying as it kept my "no sixes in Wisconsin" streak alive. It was after this putt that someone said something like "You remember how you said you felt about Tiger at the 1997 Masters? That's how we feel right about now." It was one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me. 😄 #14 at Whispering Woods Two putts are tied here. On one, Sculley and I hit tee shots to a back hole near the front of the green. I was a foot off the front, he was a few feet on. As we were getting back into the cart, I said "putting contest from here." He replied "Well, I lost." I made the 75-footer. The other time, the pin was front-left. I was mostly middle right, barely on the green, putting across it from about 65 feet. The putt broke a good ten feet. Sculley was short left of the hole, and for the last 20 feet of the putt, I looked at @DrizZzY and the face he made — disgust, annoyance, resignation — as the putt tracked directly toward and eventually into the hole was one of the funniest and most satisfying expressions I've ever seen on the golf course. I watched him, not my ball, for the last 15-20 feet of its roll. Sorry Sculley! #9 at Tan Tara Golf Course It was my 77th stroke in my second round of the PAT. It was a ten-footer, broke a few inches, and was destined for the bottom of the cup the instant I hit it, all to pass the PAT on the number in my first attempt. (Tan Tara is now Pendleton Creek.) #17 and 18 at The Old Course, St. Andrews On the 18th, I hit it to about four feet from about 40 yards out, up and over the Valley of Sin, from the fairway. I didn't even really consider chipping or pitching it, because who does that? Not there, not me. On #17, I had about a 15 or 18 footer, after playing a 6I from 180 that flew (on purpose) only about 90 yards, and took about 15 steps to run over humps and hollows before coming to a stop on the right portion of the hole. My caddie said "I see only one or two birdies a year on the Road Hole, so, well done." Lifetime scoring average on 17 at the Old: 3. I'll take that. Far Hole (#?), Putting Course at Streamsong Black @kpaulhus and I were screwing around. Calling out holes, and tee locations. I walked over to the fringe of the nearby green on the Black course… We putted from the fringe in case we scuffed the ground a bit. Well, I chose a putt from the fringe to the far side of the 18-hole putting course. In Google Earth, I measured the putt just now at nearly 400 feet. As in… 130 yards. I hit the stick. My ball stopped less than two feet from the hole. The other diners let out a loud shout when I smacked it, and looked way over at me and yelled out "it hit the stick!" Kyle lost that hole. And most of the other ones. 😉  Some stats: Count: 8 Shortest: 10 feet. Longest: 130 yards. Average length: ~93 feet. But, y'know… Those are my favorite putts. What are yours?
    • I have one still sitting in a box my son gave me for Christmas.  For a while, I used an app on my watch, but it drained the phone battery . We have Markers at 180 ,135 and 90M , and generally I am close enough to one of them to get a fairly rough indication of how far.  Also, for a while now ,I walk into town and back at weekends, approximately 5 mile round-trip . I’ll start a walk on my watch, and on the way home when the watch ticks over to .10/.90 etc I’ll pick a street light ,lamp post , sign , and guess how far, normally anything up to about 100 m, I have now got very good at estimating distances, especially up to 50 or 60M.
