My bag has more talent in it than I have the ability to use it

Well said. I surmise that is true for more than care to admit it, including me.

My bag says I play what works best. No loyalty to any manufacturer.

Its not the clubs, neccessarily, that speak loudest when someone shows up at the first tee to join your group. Its the little things, Ball retrievers, iron covers, a bag with the name of a beer on the side, no headcovers on the woods. Its those types of things that say watchout, you're in for a long round.

I mean, I have to say the kiss of death, IMHO, are those neoprene iron covers. I have yet to ever play with a someone using iron covers that could break 100. Normally, the iron cover guy is someone who is soooo over their head that they have $3000 worth of equipment, have spent $500 on lessons, have 20 swing thoughts going on in their head, take 5 practice swings before each shot, and can't break 100.

The act of putting them on doesn't take longer, its the stuff that people I know who have them do like take 5 practice swings and standing over the ball for an hour, etc. Plus the last time I played with an iron cover guy he lost 3 or 4 of them and had to keep going back to get them. They are for lack of a more PC word, hacker gear. Really good golfers don't fool with them.

And why in the hell are you in such a hurry for anyway, golf is about getting away from the wife and or kids with your buddies and relaxing

I am not in a hurry but I also don't like playing behind some dunderhead that can't play 18 holes in 4 1/2 hours. Plus, I like to get back to my family and spend time with them as well. 5 1/2 hours is too long.

I am sorry, but IMHO iron covers are at the top of the list of totally unneccessary golf equipment, along with ball retrievers and those nutcracker looking things that people use to put their initials on a golf ball. I don't mean to rag on anyone, it takes all types, I only speak from my personal experience. I don't want to come off as some elitist jackass, I'll play with anyone.

My bag says a bunch:

My bag- wife bought it when I ordered my own bday/fathers day/anniversary gift(new AP1's)...she wanted to suprise me. It is the new titleist stand bag in brown...yep it looks SWEET.

Irons - Says I upgraded from some 10 year old pings. I wanted the AP2's but felt his swing was a year away...so I have the 1's.

wedges - old school cleveland rtg's. The 60 looks like it has been hit off of concrete 100's of times because it has...long story that involved gambling

3H Cobra dws says I needed a 225 club.

Driver's - The Nike and Cobra, soon to be joined by a Titleist D2 and L4V X say indecision and a big tax return from Uncle Sam can be dangerous.

Putter - Ping G5 says I retired my original 15 year old Anser and bought the first one that felt good. It is soon to be replaced by a custon SC newport.

Besides that I need to buy stock in Fortune Brands what else does my bag tell you?

I only have two friends who are really committed to golf and they happen to be members at a local club. I try to play with them as much as they are allowed to bring me on as a guest but that's usually twice a month at most. With that in mind, I go to all of my courses alone and just get paired up with whoever they feel to pair me up with. I don't mind playing with random people and I've met a lot of cool people this way.

But... I get judged big time on the first tee. I tend to wear nicer clothes but nothing crazy considering I'm on a muni dog track. They take one look at my bag and assume I'm a scratch. I can't even count how many times people have discussed match play formats or a money game and have just left me out b/c they fear I'm too good.

People have told me "only players use sunday bags... are those blades?" "oh, we'd like you to play but none of us can beat you" - EVEN THOUGH THEY'VE NEVER SEEN ME HIT A BALL

My bag says, I hope, that I ignore advertising hype and try to make equipment decisions based on solid information and careful testing. It probably also says I can't really afford or probably have the game for top end stuff, but that I know the difference between good clubs for the $ and junk. I don't know about the wedges, before this set I always played cleveland wedges, but wedges with graphite shafts are usually special order, so.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
